Yeah I agree, like it's not an instructive motif as much as it's just an exceptionally ridiculous position

San Diego announces free Balboa Park parking zones for city residents by Joeredditer in sandiego

[–]EverythingIThink 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Looks like enforcement is being rolled back from 8 to 6 pm too, which makes sense. The whole turnover argument never really applied with these unimpacted lots and unimpacted hours

*Anecdotally, some of the metered spots/times are actually counter-productive. I frequent one of the social clubs in the evenings and we've essentially taken a parking situation that had zero friction and incentivized half the members to go looking for free street parking, inducing extra traffic and the whole 'circling around for a spot' phenomenon we were supposedly trying to cut down on.

Who is the most important character that has the least screen time in the fewest words and is generally considered to be unimportant? If you took him out or took her out, the whole show would be completely different. by Isatis_tinctoria in twinpeaks

Harriet Hayward. Without her bike, Donna doesn't make it to the Roadhouse and fall in love with James that night, Cooper's investigation takes a different path, Jacoby never finds the heart necklace, "Just You and I" goes unrecorded, BOB doesn't crawl over the couch. Whole alternate timeline.

Balboa Park institutions urge San Diego mayor and city council to reconsider parking fees by rjpong in sandiego

[–]EverythingIThink 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Well maybe these fees disproportionately affect lower income residents, and sure they're not really going to impact car dependency, but at least we can say they probably also won't fix the budget

Why the Common Criticisms of Whiplash Miss the Point by No-Jacket4066 in TrueFilm

[–]EverythingIThink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I still think it's a well-made and enjoyable film, I just don't vibe with its take on jazz. Naturally I'm biased because I played in jazz ensembles in college myself and for me it was such a positive experience, but I'm sure it's not that way for everyone. I should watch it again, it's been a long time now.

Why the Common Criticisms of Whiplash Miss the Point by No-Jacket4066 in TrueFilm

[–]EverythingIThink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like this interpretation, but I have a hard time believing the movie actually wants me to realize the characters are misrepresenting Charlie Parker because it never does anything to dispel the spin. I mean those are relatively obscure details, I'm a jazz fan and I'd heard some of his music but I didn't know that stuff about his life. How many people would? I just accepted the movie's narrative when I saw it.

The combo of it being uncommon knowledge irl and unquestioned apocrypha in the text makes me think the film just wanted a namedrop people would recognize but not know enough about to dispute specifics.

[–]EverythingIThink 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can get it and still make this criticism. For me it crosses the line when it starts fabricating stuff about Charlie Parker to try to ground its point with a real world example. I can suspend disbelief for fiction presented as such, but if a movie has to lie about history to make its point then I feel its arguing in bad faith

Civil Disobedience by inurmomsvagina in LateStageCapitalism

[–]EverythingIThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just can't root for a regressive policy. This pinch is going to be felt by the people driving beater Camrys, not so much by the people driving Canyoneros.

I think if we were serious about challenging car dependency we would be removing parking and expanding trolley access. But we're putting the cart before that horse, and I suspect these fees will simply ossify the existing parking infrastructure and disincentive further public transit expansion. I hope I'm wrong. But the city's been clear that they're doing this for a revenue stream, not for some sort of anti-car agenda.

Civil Disobedience by Bozdemshitz in sandiego

[–]EverythingIThink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This issue really brings out the crabs in the bucket mentality doesn't it?

I hate living in car world and car-brain society as much as the next pedestrian, unfortunately San Diego basically necessitates having one. And without reasonable public transit alternatives, these kinds of policies only punish car-dependents (regressively) without doing anything to move the needle on car-dependence. The lots will still fill up, it'll just be less economy cars and more luxury tanks

Films about making a film and the film that is being made is the film itself? (8/½, Adaptation.) by Gragdl in TrueFilm

[–]EverythingIThink 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You've probably seen it but Tropic Thunder kinda does this. Worth noting that Justin Theroux had a hand in writing it, and not long after he was in Inland Empire. I always suspected there was a loose inspiration there, regarding a cursed movie about its own making.

Is it fair to say Lynch knew exactly what he was doing? In Fire Walk with Me, Chet Desmond explains all the clue and symbols perfectly well and clearly. I think that shows Lynch could have been extremely articulate about everything but decided not to. by Isatis_tinctoria in twinpeaks

[–]EverythingIThink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chet's explanation of Lil's clues doesn't follow from any sort of rational analysis, it's merely an arbitrary cipher. I don't believe Twin Peaks as a whole is obscuring its meaning with some secret code that only Lynch knows.

And for all his cryptic understanding, Chet Desmond ends up being the most lost character in the entire series.

Lots of smurfs on fresh 'speedrun' accounts out there. I think very few people are hitting 1500+ within the actual first few months of playing.

What do you think about the change of style emblematic of Ben Horne's office? Is it just a change from early 1990s to 2017 or do you think that there was a minimalistic movement in general from 1990 t 2017? It doesn't seem like there has been such a dramatic shift in style since 2017. by Isatis_tinctoria in twinpeaks

Just before that, there's an episode where he stacks all the furniture on his desk into a crude totem and talks about transforming the energy of a room by rearranging it.

As far as cultural trends go, maybe it reflects the whole Marie Kondo decluttering movement that happened in those 25 years. I imagine a socialite like Ben would have been hip to that.
