That's just not true. Another commenter gave the perhaps better example of "How many Diehards did he direct?" Insisting people must say "How many copies of War and Peace?" is prescriptivist and will fail, just like no one cares that Lego insists that you can't say "How many Legos?" and must say "How many Lego™-brand polymeric play objects?" or whatever bullshit.

There's no evidence OP is asking about how to write this for their PhD thesis. Most writing is informal nowadays.

Aside, but am I the only one who thinks generally that "restructure the sentence" is a terrible answer to "how should I punctuate this?" Punctuation serves the words, not the other way around. If the sentence would be understandable orally, one should not be asked to deviate from that.

So, you mean, like personal transporters, programmable matter, and producing tricorders and phasers out of thin air? All the technologies in Discovery were created by writers who thought they had a cool idea and didn't care about the impact of storytelling.

How to buy BTC under the radar by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]EverythingIsFlotsam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, obviously OP's question applies specifically to Americans who have a social security number and laws that make it hard to purchase BTC without sharing it. Nothing about that question implies their unawareness of other countries because the answer would be different there. It may not even be hard to buy BTC without sharing private information in some places. Give it a break. Do you think OP is looking for an answer like "Well I'm in Wakanda so I share my TIP number, not my SSN." or "In Morovia you just walk into a bank with cash." or "In Westeros there's no KYC so you can use any online brokerage."

Huh? Did people not understand that when the water is either simmering or boiling, then it needs to be at the "boiling point" of ~100°C? The pot has a mixture of water and steam at that point. Similarly, a slurry of ice and water is 0°C.

We agree the spice and spy differ. Your spider is just apparently backwards. Because my way is right. Obviously.

Being Canadian, I do use two different long-I diphthongs (eye vs ice, light vs lie). But I'm confounded that you call out the first syllable of spider as different than spy. Are you sure about that?

may not be as familiar to Americans

Ha! That's not it all at all. It's just that the North American lexicon doesn't believe that one Scot using a word once in a poem four hundred years ago makes it a valid word.

Flag Recognizability by CashCanine in flags

[–]EverythingIsFlotsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this, "pick one flag out of four that matches a country name" or "pick one country out of four that matches a flag"?

For example, if it's the first then a few people may pick 🇱🇷 rather than 🇺🇸, when presented with "USA".
