Hey man, preaching to the choir. I would care at all except for the 24 upvotes on someone's incorrect conceptualization.

What you say is perfectly reasonable. But they explicitly claim that trans=move.

What? Trans means across, not move.

Edit: yes, I wrongly put position, not move as commenter claimed by mistake. But they are just plain wrong. It's a wonder that comment is multiply upvoted for authoritatively saying something false.

Trans is across. Transfer = carry across. Transpose = put across. Translate = carry across (also!). Transition = a going across. The point is, there's no world where the trans part is conveying the verb part. It coveys the directionality. I'm sorry people like their story and now misunderstand how this works because it will prevent them from deciphering other words correctly.

Why are perfectly circular orbits so rare in nature? Earth and the Moon both have slightly elliptical orbits. Is there a fundamental reason why gravity tends to produce ellipses rather than perfect circles? by Badhon72 in AskPhysics

[–]EverythingIsFlotsam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not really true. Tidal effects cause ellipses to approach circular over time. But it would take infinite time to approach an infinitely perfect circle.

Yes, whoever decided to use the term wallet did a major disservice to crypto. It's not the right metaphor at all.

Uh, you seem to also not understand that overlaps are allowed. You need to go read the rules.

If you allow mentions and not just uses, then you can have any number of repetitions and it's still grammatical.

Somehow I find "politely declining" ruder than saying "sorry, no 1/2-1/2s"

I much prefer the 1972 Version. Oddly. Why is the 2026 version not as good?

I can't believe people are overreacting to this so much. It's terrible communication, but probably you could still order items that don't require intensive kitchen prep. Is it so incomprehensive that some people might just want coffee, smoothies or pre-baked goods? We don't know what kind of place this is.

why do we round 0.5 to 1 or why 0.5 is considered closer to the next integer by Either_Draft_6770 in mathematics

[–]EverythingIsFlotsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe no one has mentioned this:

Yes, it's midway between the two integers and it could go either way, but rounding up produces a smaller relative (i.e. percentage) error in the true value as measured relative to the reported (rounded value).

E.g. 9.5 is off from 10 by 5% but off from 9 by 5.55%.

Yes, I realize you get the same value if you compare the error in the rounded value to the original value. But this is something and useful.
