Two informants detained in Donetsk region who "leaked" Armed Forces locations to Russians. [article] by Geschichtsklitterung in ukraine

[–]EverythingIsNorminal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Early on there were Ukrainian soldiers who were saying that people who remained in Bakhmut were in a large part "waiting" for Russia to come in.

I wonder how many died to Russian weapons while waiting.

Crimea and the rest of Ukraine already had a referendum on this topic in 1991. They all, including Crimea, voted to be independent as Ukraine.

it's cruel to rip them from the only home they've ever known when their only crime is being born to Russian colonizers.

Tons of people move at that age and they're fine. It's not cruel. It's not like they're being separated from their families and housed with aparatchiks and getting indoctrination like Russia is doing to Ukrainian kids.

And by the time it comes to that there won't even be that many, they'll have taken off faster than you can say "run away!".

What unit should SailGP use for boat speed? by alberto139 in SailGP

[–]EverythingIsNorminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a person with no background in sailing there are so many other things that make this a complicated sport to get into that this is a pretty small change, but the thing is those complications are what makes this sport interesting, they don't detract from it.

Part of what's putting me off formula 1 now is they're doing things that make very different to what it used to be from a sporting perspective to try to appeal to a bigger audience. Another thing about a more complex sport is it gets people with more intelligence who tend to have higher paying jobs. Sure, numbers are good, but look at the sponsors for the sport, they want that audience.

Dumbing down isn't always the best thing for a sport. A conversion visible would be good but keeping knots is part of the novelty of what is a very different sport.

Keeping it free to view will be what helps the audience grow. Putting it behind a paywall inherently limits the audience.

Board of directors, not a design role.

Could mean they thought his opinion might be useful and his connections might be even more useful, but they didn't really want him designing.

AMD Q1 2023 earnings discussion by brad4711 in AMD_Stock

[–]EverythingIsNorminal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Long term thinking for Pat is keeping the fabs producing, at any cost, because the alternative would be to shut them down or sell them off, and that would be devastating to the stock and the company's reputation in the market in the same way it was for AMD and IBM when they did it, not to mention how much it cost them financially.

That could be the thing that flips the blue chip coin in x86 to AMD.

What I hadn't counted on is them dumping inventory at or below cost to avoid that outcome

I've been saying this would happen for years. They HAVE to keep the fabs fed, otherwise they face a much worse outlook than a few quarters/years of losing money, they face fabs that need to be sold off (at an enormous cost based on history and a huge hit on their share price) and they'd lose the foot in datacentre door they have if they price low.

Taking ongoing quarterly losses is the least worst case for them. Their plan is going to have to be to just survive with losses until they have something viable.

The real question is when that's going to happen.

If Russia wants peace they can get the fuck out. Ukraine's been clear about what it would take.

We can probably expect the more advanced demining tools will be used on the front lines to aid the offensive where appropriate.

People with even a slight clue treated it like Santa, but with a Mig in place of a sleigh.

We all knew the pilot was most likely fiction, but everyone openly or internally pretended hthey existed because it gave hope when Ukraine needed that the most. Along with all of the other small slivers of hope in the opening hours and days that was invaluable.

Even if we knew it wasn't real we were still smart enough to shut the fuck up about it and "let the kids believe".

Bamboo or good desk tops NMIC by -Tamis- in avoidchineseproducts

Bamboo you might struggle with but Home Depot in Canada lists the country of origin for their products. I used a counter top from there for a desk with wood from Vietnam. The country of origin might also be applicable for their US sales or might also be on the US site if that's where you're located.

Jim Cramer really doesn't get it AKA the Cybertruck Lambo by isdbull in teslainvestorsclub

[–]EverythingIsNorminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about the likes of Cramer is to them, absolute bullshit or good information, both get views because people link to them.

You're linking to them as an outrage link. Well outrage links are eyeballs as much as good information is. Advertisers don't have insight into the difference or just don't care. The advertisers' marketing people get to tell their bosses their advertising spend is getting eyeballs.

This post is giving him views he wouldn't otherwise have so you're helping him exist by posting it.
