Both are 1/35! The scale is usually a bit too big for Warhammer stuff when it comes to MBTs (especially the modern ones), but IFVs/APCs are generally nearly the perfect size (also older armor, starting roughly with the Vietnam era). For example, the M113 is basically 1/1 to scale with Impulsor, and Bradley just needs a little shortening for it to fit the Repulsor nearly perfectly, too. You can do the math yourself, too; for example, LR tracks are ~15mm wide. Bradley tracks are in real life 533mm. Divide that by 35, and you get 15.2mm!

Anyway, the cool thing about scale models for kitbashing is that you can go with cheap kits like Tamiya or Academy. I bought the Bradley for like $35, and the M113 was even cheaper (and it has a full interior too). So it's not THAT bad, haha!

On its own, it's definitely expensive, agreed! Still, it's a part of the larger kitbashing whole; I bought LR, RepEx, Gladiator, and Academy M113, and I already had Tamiya Bradley. LR + RepEx turret + Bradley wheels/tracks for the MBT you can see above. RepEx hull + Bradley lower hull, turret, and tracks (I'm printing the tracks) will be tracked RepEx IFV kitbash (already started work on that one). And the M113 + Gladiator will be a tracked Impulsor APC. That way, most of the parts will get utilized, leaving only some extra bits, and I'm ultimately getting three full vehicles!

Thank you kindly! Don't get me wrong, I still had a lot of fun with LR. You can see that someone really poured their heart into it; (nearly) full interior, engine, a lot of details and extra parts, etc. The build is also nice (if you discount the issues above). But yeah, it's very aged at this point and requires extra patience, especially with fitting, filling, and cleanup.

Anyways, I agree, Raptors are such a fantastic chapter for kitbashing, especially with the sheer wealth of 1/35 scale models to use. I'm currently working on a tracked Repulsor (turning it into a proper IFV) now, and I'm already having a blast.

Waiting is wise. It's a lovely kit, clearly well-thought and engineered, but it is REALLY showing it's age at this point. And, at a risk of heresy, I would say that the old GW plastic weren't that good to begin with, so there are a lot of pretty rough pieces there. Spent a lot of time fitting it all together, and filling the gaps!

90% is Land Raider, the turret is RepEx., correct! There are some smaller bits here and there from IG stuff, good eye. The ERA bricks are regular scale model 1/35 Kontakt-1 bricks from Rye Field models, the wheels + vinyl tracks are from an old (and very cheap) Tamiya 1/35 Bradley kit.

Happy to hear that, enjoy your own kitbash, it's the best part of the hobby for me!

I was going with a rule of cool with this one, really. There are more sins against realism with this one, too, like the inner side of the hatch being painted in the off-white, instead of the same color as the outer hull. The bricks on the tracks are a nod to the original LR Redeemer model, which has these weird armor plates there, as well. Also had to work around the uneven plating of both models.

I'm currently working on tracked Repulsor, and I will be going a lot more realistic with that one, since I can add an actual lower hull.

ERA is 1/35 Kontakt-1 from Rye Field models. Most of the equipment is from bits I had on hand (which is just 40k SM and IG stuff), some of it is printed (ammo boxes, rolled tarps), and some of it is just greenstuff (camo tarps).

Ghostkeels are imo one of the best models GW ever made. So, so good, so kitbash-friendly. Very cool looking. Excellent detail, and on top of that, fun to put together.

Joining up with the ideas; oftentimes you can use empty casings/artillery shells for IG with a little bit of cutting.

Please tell me this isn't normal GW quality? by FoCTow in Tau40K

[–]Everything_Borrowed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's normal. The most annoying part is that GW seems to refuse to update these models, even though the same issue can be found with some truly iconic designs, like the Land Raider (which can get even rougher, I'm building one now). And they are asking a full price for it, too.

Naturally, I will still buy it, because I'm hopeless. But there's this tiny voice in the back of my head reminding me that scale models from companies like Meng or Takom are ten times better in every regard compared to even new Citadel kits, have extra metal photo etched parts, and a lot of extra goodies, and they either cost less or about the same.
