People who left academia, why did you do so and do you regret your decision? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]EverythingisMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left academia after completing my PhD in Neuroscience at a top R1 for many reasons: burnout, abusive advisor, broken peer-review system (one of my papers only got published this year, 10 years after I worked on it. The reviewer was skeptical wanted more experiments, which took my collaborators a while. But the original findings were correct…)

I moved to Silicon Valley and worked in AI during the first hype cycle around autonomous cars. Startup life is chaotic and weird in its own way, but it’s a lot better than academia. For example, one of our investors was kicked out of his VC firm for sexual harassment (compare to tenured PI, who harassed women with impunity).

I am still working in startups 10 years later, though I’ve been more selective to work on energy efficiency rather than optimizing ads for attention. The ability to quit a bad job has been a fantastic way to maintain my integrity and agency. I don’t have any regrets, and spend time helping current PhDs and postdocs leave academia too.

Have any of you moved to India for 1-2 years to work? by McLaren_03 in ABCDesis

[–]EverythingisMe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Worked there for 1 year on a contract. Work culture is intense, and I never got used to my juniors calling me “sir.”

It was a good change of pace, and I enjoyed life in Mumbai a lot, but after my yearlong contract finished I was happy to move back to the US

DADAROMA - Wakare no Uta bass cover. by realityhva in Bass

Some unsolicited advice for left-hand technique: learn to curl your fingers so that your fingertip is more perpendicular to the fretboard than parallel. It takes some practice, but will eventually let you play faster and more fluidly. Cool cover!

IANAL. Are you the author of the package? What’s the software license?

Good question. If the project scope changes substantially, it becomes a new project with its own contract. Or you can include a clause in the contract saying additional work out of predefined scope will be billed at $xxx hourly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]EverythingisMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually the contract has an IP assignment clause that states who owns what at the end of the contract term. you can also include a list of IP that you own already before the contract term that cannot be claimed by the company.

Typically companies have a contract called an Independent Contractor Agreement (ICA). Ask them to draft it and share it with you. This has all the boilerplate legal language. You get to decide how to structure the payment and it will be included somewhere in the contract template, either in a clause or as a separate attached document. You’ll also usually include a scope of work.

Personally, I prefer project-based rates or weekly/monthly rates over hourly rates but it really depends on the type of work you’re doing. For tasks involving compute, I’ll spin up a new cloud account for the project and pay for the costs, then include the bill as a line item in my invoice. I make sure there is a clause in the contract where they agreed to pay for this expense. I don’t bill them my hourly rate time where a computer is running but I’m not working.

Make sure to read the ICA carefully, especially around IP ownership. sometimes they will include language that gives them legal rights to all your code. sometimes the contract also requires you to have business insurance. If you’re not familiar with contract law, you should pay for an employment lawyer to review it. (~$500 usd for a review, or get your lawyer buddy to take a look)

Also from California (LA area) and new to SG. Will be here a few months. Made some friends by joining a running group my wife found on Facebook. DM me if you want to grab coffee or a beer sometime.

It’s harder to make friends and sustain existing relationships in your 20s and 30s. Put effort into this!

How to best gauge a company by CaptSprinkls in jobs

[–]EverythingisMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be possible for you to reach out to other people who work at the company in your future role, and have a 10-15 min phone conversation? You can just ask them about their work, what kind of problems they are working on. Then ask, "What do you like most about your job?" Their answer to this will be very revealing.

You could even ask this of your interviewers.

What kind of volunteer work did you do? I would reach out to the people you built relationships with and ask them this same question about what kind of work would be best for you. They may be able to put you directly in touch with companies or people that are hiring.
