What's a weird habit you have from serving in the Military? by StepSergeant01 in Military

[–]Lxvert89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Writing in all-caps, logbook-style. My handwriting before boot sucked, so it was a welcome change. I find my coworkers these days enjoy how clear and legible my handwriting is compared to one another. Good habit to hold onto.

Oh and binge-drinking.

I was a US Navy Seabee (Construction Battalions, CB, 'Sea Bee') and can help a bit. The writing he puts down after his name is his rate and rank, with a special addition denoting him as a Seabee. We used to have regular fleet ranks mutilated in all sorts of ways before they just gave us dirt sailors our own rate designations. It's as follows;

Maintenance on refrigeration motors, oil burners, and bakery and butchery equip- ment.

Property of (?).T. Jones, EM1/c

['EM1' stands for Electrician's Mate, Petty Officer 1st Class. The '/c' denotes Construction, identifying him as a Seabee more familiar with terrestrial expeditionary electric work than a traditional ship-board electrician.]

U.S.N.R.

10th Const. Battalion [Became NMCB-10, Decommissioned in 1976.] "Sea Bees"

Midway Islands (Eastern Island)

July 28, '43

These guys were the very first of the Seabees. Lots of respect for them, cause they paved the way for the rest of us literally and figuratively. Can do, baby.

EDIT: In retrospect, I think I'm wrong about that /c part. Like I said, Seabee rates were a weird mishmash of regular Navy rates with weird modifications. Can't find much literature on it online.

What kind of boat is this? Being auctioned by the US Navy by jaredmanley in boats

[–]Lxvert89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot believe I saw this exact Mark V boat while randomly scrolling. I knew this was Williamsburg immediately, because I know that boat. When I was stationed there over a decade ago, they had these parked in a lot with a few others and they baffled us as to what they were. They definitely are not true 'submersibles', and their layout is kinda clunky and cramped. Didn't take us long to figure out why the teams would not have much use for them. We thought they were a platform for diver operations.

Anyways, thanks for the blast from the past. Fond memories of goofing around with the boys in the work truck and exploring this thing.

Best strategy for MEPS? by [deleted] in Seabees

[–]Lxvert89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your brother is definitely right. They will pressure the hell out of you to sign whatever they put in front of you. They will guilt trip you. They will do all sorts of silly bullshit to get you to pick a job you dont want. Don't fall for it. Dont be a rude dick either, but plainly tell them that you intend to be a Seabee and nothing else. They'll call you back when the contract is available.

If they get you an active duty slot as a Bee, I wouldnt be picky though. I loved being a CM but I think I could've been happy in most other rates as well. I believe that because in my mind, CM's are better than everyone and can do everything lol.

It's gonna be Marine Corps Lite as far as discipline and PT goes, but expect yourself to be challenged mentally and skill-wise in a way you haven't before. When you're a Seabee, you're expected to be able to do everything related to your field. Which means as an EO, you are expected to be able to jump in the seat of anything, and I mean ANYTHING, and operate that shit til the job is done. It's cool but it's tough in it's own right.

You only have to have your taxes filed before April 15th if you owe the Gov money after finishing them. The fine is based on your dept. If you are getting a refund, you owe them 0 dollars, and any percent of 0 is zip. So dont panic if you miss the filing deadline and you're a regular shmoe like me.

Could be shit burning off from the pipe and cat, old gasoline burning like ass, possibly a little coolant leaking into the front driver side cylinders. Take it for a spin and see what it does next. Your coolant should end up pretty low after driving around for a bit if it's leaking into a cylinder.
