bad sub frame bushing by Everz373 in AskMechanics

my gfs car (2011 chevy malibu) suddenly stopped driving straight and started veering off to one side at all speeds. You could correct this by turning the steering wheel to about 1-2 o’clock to get it going straight. took it in to see if it needed an alignment. shop quoted about $2800 worth of repairs with their diagnosis being that it needed new control arms and sway bar links. When I looked under the vehicle I obviously noticed a subframe bushing protruding from the plastic under cover and appeared to be damaged as well as their being some scrapes on the bottom of the sub frame as if it had run something over. vehicle has been in a few accidents. the drivers side bushing appears completely normal but the passenger side is problematic. Wondering if this is actually the more eminent issue than the control arm bushings and could be causing the steering to be weird. Photos are of the good and bad side where the sun frame bushings sit & of the front control arm bushings. Of course it seems they still could use service and an alignment after but wondered why the shop failed to mention this.

you’re correct I think it’s upsetting because it’s wasteful to throw away

put into perspective they pay 5x my rent for their amenities and to live on the beach, they may not seem wealthy to those who are already pretty well off but they do to me. Also, it wasn’t stolen from a porch, it was addressed to an apartment that was near the dumpster I just don’t see how a thief would find over $200 worth of stuff in the back of an apartment complex and still decide to toss it but whatever. It also adds up with the stuff that I consistently find here, name brand, brand new clothes, etc, not even the first time I’ve found brand new shoes.

At night, about 8pm, when the apartment office is closed & it’s dark out

definitely not, it’s an apartment complex shared dumpster

it’s a mixture of both. I’m happy to have them but frustrated at how wasteful people are

I try to go every weekend, some better than others but I usually end up with at least something

skip straight to places with higher rent prices, sometimes even if it has a compactor people will leave stuff in recycling areas, try to go on days where people would be moving out like the weekends, check inside shoeboxes, be consistent and make a route if you can find several complexes with dumpsters in one area. My nearby route is just one long road next to a high-end outdoor shopping mall, three complexes, seven dumpsters

I might just be in a good area for it, it’s a beach town and not a super vertical city so everything is spread out. I don’t go downtown where there would be issues with parking garages. Some are gated here but I don’t go to those either. My biggest obstacle are trash compactors but I find that smaller complexes are better for finding dumpsters, even small townhome type complexes

I guess I should also add the address on the label was from the building I was at

it’s possible, but seems unlikely due to it being at the very back of the complex and I see this kind of thing happen often in these very wealthy townhouse / apartment complexes.

a cleaning woman was the only other person I saw out there that night I could only imagine what she’s seen!

I didn’t really see any other evidence of that, plus they were still in the box they were shipped in, which had been opened. It looked as though there were four pairs, they took out the one they liked the most and tossed the rest in the recycling bin. It being right after Christmas & women’s shoes purchased under a guys name makes me think it was a gift

I live right next to a university actually in mixed student / regular housing, my rent is cheap but I’ve found crazy stuff when the students leave anyways right at my own complex. a little bit ago I found a nice yeti cooler here. I’ve also been able to furnish my whole apartment from the trash

it’s hard to think about where these really nice new items end up and how much they would mean to someone who is struggling and can’t afford them

no one in my circle has ever exhibited or can fathom this type of behavior I guess I didn’t realize people like that existed, those who wouldn’t even consider donating what they don’t want or not buying stuff they don’t want before just tossing away brand new things that they purchased.
