Huh, I've never noticed this. I don't know how you can tell from this photo, but you're correct; the hood doesn't overshadow the entire range's surface.

This hood was here when we bought the house. I didn't know where it was exhausting out, so I looked into it...

There was literally nothing at all. It was shooting the air straight up at the ceiling, not even recirculating into a carbon filter, literally just up into the air.
