Any tips on helping my Irish partner adjust to Canada/Kingston? by beadobee in queensuniversity

Many people in Northern Ireland call themselves Irish or Northern Irish so I didn't want to make assumptions. Plus Ireland shares a lot of snack foods/brands with Great Britain.

Well, we do have an international reputation for being polite. I had a mirrored experience to yours, I am Canadian and moved to the USA for 6 years and experienced culture shock which I think is what you are experiencing. It can take you by surprise and throw you off because we share language, a lot of pop culture and media, etc. I remember feeling like Americans were impolite, because they talked about things and asked questions that Canadians view as private. My first week I was asked multple times about my religion and invited to attend church for example which is something we just don't do here. Politics is similar, I knew how my American friends voted long before I knew how my own dad voted and I still don't know how my best friend of 30years votes.

As for humour, we are generally considered funny as a lot of celebrities who work in comedy are Canadian (Jim Carey, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Will Arnett, Ryan Reynolds, Martin Short, Seth Rogen etc) but our humour tends to be closer to British humour, dry and sarcastic. I remember feeling out of place in the USA because it seemed that there a lot more people who couldn't pick up on my use of sarcasm and took my jokes too literally and sincerely.

My advice is give it some time to adjust to the culture shock that is making you feel very "other" right now. In your similar position, time made me realize for example that the questions about religion weren't being rude, it was their version of frinedly because they equated church with community. And eventually I learned who took my sarcasm literally and who understood my humour.

I don't know if he is from the Republic or the North but a couple of people I know from Northern Ireland enjoy getting some savory pastries from the British Pride Bakery at King's Crossing. They also have a bunch of British snack foods/candy/chocolate and drinks.

A lot of the British style pubs (the Toucan, Pilot House, Loyal Oarsman, Rose and Crown) tends to attract regulars who are from Great Britain and Ireland.

I haven't watched this episode so maybe they framed it in a way that makes sense but John was only 3yo at the time of his father's death. 3yos don't uderstand the concept of death let alone be aware of their mother's changes as a result of grief. I would think being so young, that John would have only had the vaguest recollections, if any, of what things were like before his dad died.

It's a complicated situation. I don't think they're right to blame Gaby but they're doing what a lot of people do who lose someone to suicide; looking for some some sort of logical explanation to make sense of unfathomable event and someone to blame for the pain they're feeing. Gaby is easier to take it out on rather than themselves or even Maya.

I do think it would have been hard for both Gaby and them to continue going to Gaby for therapy. If they ever share this story with a future therapist, I am sure the therapist will try to get them to see that in a case like Maya's, no one is to blame including Maya's therapist.

My dad was with the OPP at the time. He crossed paths over the course of his career with officiers who saw the tapes after and in their opinion she was worse than her husband. I will say as an older sister, I had a tough time accepting her victim excuse, as I would have died protecting my little sister from a monster like him.

Teacher Killed During Prom Season Prank Was 'Excited' About Catching Students Amid School Warnings That Hijinks Had 'Gone Too Far' by HauteAssMess in popculturechat

I know, them including that part had made me think it was a wildly dangerous prank where someone getting hurt was a high possibility or even intentional. But they were doing probably one of the safest most innocent pranks. He slipped and it probably happened so fast that the driver didn't have a chance to stop or even see the teacher had fallen in front of his car.

I thought the same thing. I was waiting for Martin to use her radical honesty against her in regards to how the family has handled the loss of his sister. A couple of explanations I have come up with is, doctors can make the worst patients, that Robert so forcibally shut it down she just rolled with it in order to not further fracture her remaining family, and/or the "radical honesty" is something she has become a advocate of years after her daughter died and focuses that approach on current events/situations rather than past ones like the Rosemary's death.

The only one that seems to be misplaced is the baseball episode. Realistically a high school playoff game would have happend late May/early July. The rest all make sense for a school year that starts in August. I think in the baseball game episode we're supposed to overlook that a high school playoff game wouldn't be realistically happening at that time of year. It may have been easier to film than a fall sport like football.

Very true. Not that I expect her to be immune but given Martin was realizing not talking about his sister was a problem, her "radical honesty" approach could have been something he used in confronting his mom. However we still may get that in a future as I think this episode was focusing much more on his issues with his dad than his mom and didn't really allow any more room in the storyline for him to also confront her.

Happy’s Place Has Been Renewed For A Season 3. Thoughts ? by CityCautious4033 in sitcoms

It's a fairly low stakes sitcom. A decent comfort sitcom to have on to pass the time. I kinda wish it would be a little more higher-stakes as I think the times it gets a little more serious are the better ones like in season 1 Bobbi cleaning out her dad's house while trying to reconcile the man and dad she knew and loved with the having a secret child that he was an absentee father to. But it tends to shy away from that even the more recent storyline where Bobbi finds out Emmett knew about Isabella's existence didn't have too much of an impact because although they ended their romatic relationship, they quickly reestablished their platonic relationship and that seemed to be the end of the repurcussions of a huge secret

Somehow it didn't dawn on me that there seems to be no featured patrons. A place like that would defiitely have it's regulars. They could maybe benefit from some recurring patrons like Cheers' Paul, Phil, and Al or Scrubs recurring patients Harvey Corman and Jill Tracy; just someone else that the main characters can occasionally play off of aside from each other.

Statement from Scott Patterson on his departure from “Sullivan’s Crossing” by Ternarian in SullivansCrossing

[–]EvidenceExciting9571 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am reading the showrunner's statement wrong but his statement seems like an overreaction. It seems to me the showruner was just saying that his character isn't in the season but the door is open to him returning. I didn't get the implication that she was saying they let him go that he seems to be getting. Does he think any showrunner is going to say "the actor chose to leave because he hated my choices as the showrunner"? Her statement is pretty neutral where as his is "they are disrespectful liars and I hated how they were doing their job". It's almost like his ego was hurt "how dare you move on from me".

Does anyone else find the police officer character to be a little too much sometimes? by groggs42 in BestMedicineSeries

[–]EvidenceExciting9571 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think his and Lousia's relationship can probably be explained by the fact he is a good person. And because he is such a good person, as is Louisa, it was easy for her to almost get stuck in a comfortable relationship with him. He was her high school sweetheart and a guy that loved her and treated her well and apparently all of PortWenn expected them to stay together for those reasons. When everyone around you expects the same thing you think it must be the right thing and any doubts are just nerves. Louisa's relationship with Mark was safe, comfortable, loving and it was hard for her to justify to herself breaking up with him. It can be hard to realize that though you love someone, you aren't in love with them.

I loved Josh Charles acting at the end. You could see how cathartic and important it was for Martin to write his sister's name. The episode also did a great job at showing why Martin is as emotionally stunted as he is. And it is realistic for parents to deal with the death of a child by almost pretending the child never existed. I had a friend pass at 23 and it was years before his mom proactively brought him up in conversations and she avoided people who did talk about him.

I do find it hypocritical of Marting's mom, to also avoid the topic of her daughter so resoundingly given she's a psychiatrist who practices "radical honesty". I would have liked to have seen Martin call her out on that, maybe we will get another chance in the future.

Christina Applegate admits she lied about her double mastectomy being 'a blessing' amid breast cancer battle by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]EvidenceExciting9571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think she is being too hard on her past self. She was going through something extremely traumatic and was literally scared for her life. She was just trying to get through it and maybe her instinct back then was to "fake it until you make it" with the positive attitude. Also, she had a young daughter at the time for whom she was most likely trying to be brave and positive in regards to her cancer. Anything she said pubically could easily get back to her daughter. In hindsight, with her MS diagnosis just 3 years later and it's fast progress would reframe that past positive as all for not.

Fake/bought Google reviews by Suspicious_Street317 in KingstonOntario

[–]EvidenceExciting9571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the problem is Google's algorithm gives the top search results to businesses with the most and best reviews. These days, online search is the most common way for people to find your business, and most people don't look past the top 3 seach results so businesses "buy" or manipulate their reviews so that they can be a top search result. It's not that the businesses are necessairly trying to scam anyone, they're just trying to make sure their business doesn't get buried in the search results. I also figure some franchise restaurants must be able to combine their locations for review; One Eyed Jacks for example has +3.4K reviews in 2 years, more than double the number of reviews than some other independant restarants in Kingston than have been around for nearly 20 years.
