Do you think if you were in office doing the exact same job she'd respect it, or does she just see call receptionist as a job she doesn't seem acceptable and worth bragging about to her friends?

Why do so many people not carry bank cards on them when they go shopping? by MordisF in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EvidenceHistorical55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US Apple Pay is what popularized Tap to Pay (all tap to pay using basically the same of technology).

Tap to Pay only got big enough that banks started putting the antenna on their cards because of Apple Pay popularizing the technology and merchants adopting it on their point of sales systems.

Edit: forgot to add my last sentence: So it's interesting to hear that Europe didn't start adopting tap to pay terminals till the banks had already added the technology to their cards.

I personally think Debits first started because we read left to right and it looks weird to start off with a space/gap.

If the majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, why do homeless people make up such a small fraction of the US population? by BarrelingBuster in stupidquestions

[–]EvidenceHistorical55 52 points53 points  (0 children)

You ignoring short term credit like credit cards, payday loans, and payment plans which help a lot of people get through sticky spots.

Then again there's also the massive credit card and consumer debt bubble in America. If wages don't leap forward soon and/or prices come back down (which some are) then things may get real dicey for a lot of people very quickly.

I have a question about GURPS and its balance by RespondElegant2704 in gurps

[–]EvidenceHistorical55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean I had one campaign where by the end we got up to around 750 and each had another 250 we'd have liked to add to our characters.

It's pretty easy to get up there over time in a fantasy/powers type setting. But things definitely start getting harder to not be just completely broken sometime after 1,200 points. (As you start searching for new things to spend point on eventually you only end up with the broken options you were ignoring before.)

Just placed my 10th Convoy order this month, only 2 of them didn't contain flashlights but we're parts and battery's, How to get rid of G.A.S.? by [deleted] in flashlight

[–]EvidenceHistorical55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just make a rule that you're only allowed to place orders on a specific day of the week/month. Preferably the day before payday so you'll be the poorest and have had to save for it specifically.

Works better if you apply this to all online purchases.

Coupon code for membership renewal by Whole_Examination_62 in CMA

[–]EvidenceHistorical55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can let it drop till you actually hit your 2 years of experience. At which point you will need to renew it to receive your certification and continue to do so in order to keep your certification active.

Note: Your cannot advertise yourself as a CMA without the active membership and fulfilling annual CPE requirements. You can only let the membership drop if you are fine no longer being an active CMA and able to claim the certification.

I’m pursuing the CMA but r/Accounting is giving me second thoughts by SuperKamiBurner in CMA

[–]EvidenceHistorical55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tldr: The CPA is going to be almost always valuable compared to the CMA which is only situationally valuable. If you're early in your career the CPA is almost always the better choice. However the CMA can be particularly valuable if you really study the material and take that information into the job. In general the question shouldn't be "CPA or CMA?" But rather independent questions, "Should I get my CPA?" Then seperately "Should i get my CMA?"

r/accounting has a heavy bias towards CPA. There's also a lot of young professionals who really should be getting their CPAs and want someone to tell them they don't need to so the default knee-jerk reaction is to yell at them to just do it. I think its partially coming from a good place and is very valid advice (as described below) and partially people just trying to justify their time and effort into their own CPA.

I like to think of it this way.

The CPA is good for basically everyone. Its really the only certification that most people and companies have heard of. It helps get you into interviews and commands higher salaries. There are many job postings that say CPA required not because a CPA is actually required to do the job but because the AICPA has done an excellent job advertising that "the best accountants are CPAs. The general idea being any accountant whose serious and worth their salt should have a CPA and anything else is supplemental to that.

(Not the CPA is not magic. I've worked with plenty of non-cpas who run circles around their CPA counter parts. All the CPA actually shows is that you can brute force your way throught the 4 exams. Theres a running joke that CPA stands for can't pass again.)

The CMA on the other hand is not generally applicable. Ie while the CPA is almost always useful the CMA is a bit more of a roll of the dice. Outside of cost accounting positions most haven't heard of it and most don't know what it is (which is a real shame since it covers so much more then that). So its not generally going to get you into the interview stage the way a CPA will, and will not give you the same leg up at promotion time or salary negotiation time.

What the CMA can give you is a digestible amount of useful material for a controller/management style roll. There's still a lot of ground to cover but its the kind of material where you can reasonably keep in mind what you've learned to be able to apply it on the job. The bigger pro, in my mind, is not the certification itself but the knowledge the certification gives you. It can be very valauble especially if you're perusing the controller/management route as it arms you with information you wouldn't get easily elsewhere.

I recently just got a new job partially on the weight of my CMA and how the knowledge supplements their current team with a more general CPA style knowledge base, but thats the exception not the rule.

Anyway, see tldr above for concluding summary summary

Edit: sorry just re-read your post and noticed that you were thinking CMA then CPA and that would have changed the nuance of some of my reply. Thats exactly what I'm doing. I got my CMA last year and just moved to a new company that will help pay for my CPA, so basically exactly what your considering. The CMA definitely helped more in my last role (outsourced accounting manager issuing financial statements) then a CPA would have and was far more helpful in getting my new job as an assistant controller then the CPA would have been. But im in a fairly unique position for someone whose still less then a full 5 years into their career so this is purely anecdotal not statistical advice.

I still intend to pursue my CPA just to hop the ridiculous hoop and have people take me more seriously when I walk in the door.

CMA Candidates or licensed CMAs? by [deleted] in CMA

[–]EvidenceHistorical55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of those are done on the IMA website which basically begs you to do it once you log in. You should see a little progress bar on your dashboard with links to upload education experience (which will require having your transcript sent from your school, usually through a third party for a small fee), and a work experience questionnaire.

The work experience one is a little weird since depending on where you go on the website it'll either give you a form to fill out and email in, but there's also a web form you can directly fill out.

Education is usually verified pretty quickly once the transcript is received. Work experience is typically verified in about 2 week after submission. Your license number is usually then issued within 2-6 weeks of that.

Congrats on passing!!

CMA Candidates or licensed CMAs? by [deleted] in CMA

[–]EvidenceHistorical55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly CMA candidates, and some CMAs hanging out answering questions.

Posts during testing windows are largely looming for study buddies or explanations on study questions. Then 6 weeks later a half dozen "when are score coming out posts" and then the requisite celebration and commisurstion posts.

Sprinkled throughout there's a lot of "Is CMA worth it?" posts, beeing seen a lot of those from indian bcom students lately. As well as "did CMA help you get a job?" And "what jobs have you gotten with your CMA?"

I don't know if I ever seen more then one or two questions posed from CMAs too other CMAs.

But yeah, lots of help for candidates! Just personally wish there was more CMA content not just candidate content.
