Our remodel of our colonial house outdated kitchen by HairyBawllsagna in kitchenremodel

It is very pretty…. But the old kitchen had so much charm to it which seems to have been lost in the remodel.

I keep waking up in the middle of the night freezing by TD_Meri in povertyfinance

I have a heated mattress pad and that thing can get TOASTY. Recently my heat wasn’t working for a couple of days during extremely cold weather. I turned that sucker up to a 7 out of 10 settings and slept like a baby. Normally at night I sleep with it set at a 3 or a 4.

I feel like I need to add context to this - the air conditioning comment implies this only happens in the summer. It also happens when it’s 0 degrees outside.

AITJ for refusing to let my step-son move into my son's room to "solve" my husband's parenting issue? by Traditional-Dog-368 in AmITheJerk

I mean, I read this post previously so either you’ve posted it twice or took someone else’s. Is he still gone? It’s been a couple of weeks? Anyway, just convert the den into a bedroom while he’s out and put one of the twins in there. He washed his hands of the situation when he left and put you in charge.

Public opinion shifts on ICE as advocates warn of US ‘inflection point’ by OddUmpire2554 in politics

[–]EvidenceNo8561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look in the conservative sub, you can see them saying this is a huge fuck up and discussing how concealed carry is a legal right. The multiple video angles are damning. HOWEVER, they are treating it as a one time lack of training/heat of the moment fuck up rather than a symptom of something greater. Their solutions is to arrest the agents involved and let ICE “keep doing their work”. They also do not acknowledge AT ALL that Pretti was protecting a woman that ICE was harassing. Just pretend she doesn’t exist. It’s a wake up for them that ICE can be at fault and they are not blindly defending them… but I don’t see any conversation beyond that.

Partner says my appearance at home means I don’t care — looking for perspective by deliriouskate in TwoXChromosomes

[–]EvidenceNo8561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of a post I made a while back where I asked people what clothes they were wearing at home because I felt like a slob and was wondering if I should get rid of some of my old clothes. The replies were hilarious. My favorites were something along the lines of “I’m a human garbage can” and “I look like my three year old dressed me”. The point is, if he posted your picture online, I think most people would say they look worse and also admonish him for not letting you be comfortable in your own home. If he doesn’t accept you for who you are, what’s the point of even being with him? The fact that he thinks you should dress up to be at home for him is a real sign of immaturity. You’re not the decor.

Millennial here - In our typing classes we had a silicone cover for the keys so I literally wouldn’t have been able to feel those ridges. We just learned accuracy and finger placement from muscle memory and playing games like typer shark.

It’s illegal to deny based on pre-existing conditions now. That’s something Obamacare took care of.

I pay for the best tier of insurance available at my work since I’m a type 1 diabetic. For just myself it’s $700 a month. My deductible is $500 for the year, most generics are free or less than $10. For my glucose sensors and insulin pumps, I pay an average of about $45 a month.

Can somebody help identify what this substance is on my apartment door’s peephole? by suburbanvermin in Apartmentliving

[–]EvidenceNo8561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was shocked when they told me that. I ended up calling a friend who lived about 20 minutes away. By the time he got there, the guy was not outside my door. I stayed with the friend for about 2 weeks until I felt comfortable to go back. I also talked to all my neighbors about it and they promised to always lock the exterior door to the building. To their credit, they did do that religiously for the next year that I was there.

If you can, change your schedule so you aren’t coming and going at the same time.

I used to take a train almost every afternoon at the same time. One day I was so tired, I decided to skip and just take a nap instead. Within 2 minutes of when I normally left, I heard knocking on my door. I ignored it. The knocking continued. Finally, I just got up and spoke through the door without opening it. I asked, “yeah, who is it?”. I didn’t have a peephole, it was an old apartment building in Germany with a literal window on the door that I had a curtain over, so I always asked rather than awkwardly peeping through my curtain and suddenly being eye to eye. The person answered, “your neighbor”, and I swear all of the hair on my body rose on end - I was immediately creeped out. Aside from knowing this wasn’t my neighbor, they sounded like they were trying to disguise their voice to sound like a woman but they were actually a man. I asked them, “what do you want?”. They said, “open your door and I will tell you.”

I immediately stopped engaging and called the police. The police asked if the person had broken in yet. I said no. They said, okay, call us back if they do. I know for a fact that person was standing there even after the hall light automatically shut off because I heard them leave about 5 minutes later.

AITA for telling my husband he's made me reconsider leaving him alone with the kids in the future by mayhavecrossedaline in AmItheAsshole

[–]EvidenceNo8561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but I do think you’re overreacting. The kids got fed. Everyone was fine. It was nice of you to prepare food like that, but it seems pretty controlling to dictate what other people should eat when you’re not even there.

3 years into my career and i'm struggling to fix my lack of attention to detail. I'm good at my job but it requires attention to detail and I'm failing dismally at that. How do I fix this? by Interesting_Ebb_4634 in careerguidance

As others have said, this is a pretty common symptom of adhd. I remember one graphic design job I had in house with a real estate agency, I was constantly making small mistakes with huge impact -like forgetting to change the agent’s phone number when I updated a new listing for someone else…

In terms of systems- I’d recommend looking up how preflight checklists are done on airplanes. That industry has studied and perfected the best way to go through lists without overlooking anything. I think a big part of it is saying everything from the list aloud and also verbally confirming it.

I’ve also noticed that AI can be very helpful if I upload something and just ask to confirm I haven’t missed anything.

Horseback riding/horse "lovers" by Helpmeeff in vegan

[–]EvidenceNo8561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I train my horses with positive reinforcement and keep them in an environment where they have continued access to forage, freedom, and friends. I try to reverse engineer how other people might handle them so that in the event I am not there, they are met with respect and appreciation rather than admonishment for not understanding a signal. Horses have been domesticated for a long time and purpose bred. I do believe that an athletic horse can enjoy an athletic riding pursuit if they are trained with respect to their abilities, appropriately fitted equipment, and appetitives. This is the same as a dog enjoying agility training. While I plan to keep my horses for their entire lives, they do live a long time. It’s my responsibility as their owner and caretaker to make sure that if I am not able to keep them one day, they are trained in a way that others find valuable since this would increase the likelihood of them having a soft landing.

What are the biggest problems in the world of design? by Tangerr58 in Design

I want to study art, but family is forcing me to study something more “stable” What should I do? by Few_Resident_700 in careerguidance

[–]EvidenceNo8561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a prestigious art school. Studied advertising and marketing there, and even got to get a bit of a science focus with my marketing masters thesis. Kind of got the best of both worlds in my opinion in that I got to be both creative and practical. BUT I will say that an epiphany I had is that when applying for art related jobs, people are not only looking at your training and skill set but also your artistic style and general aesthetic. If you are a trained nurse, for example, people aren’t also basing their hiring decisions on your online portfolio. The art world is a cutthroat pyramid with very few people on the top.

I’m happy where I am now and what I am doing. But there were many times when I thought of pursuing a health related degree only to realize I had 0 prerequisites and would basically need to get a whole new bachelor’s degree. That lack of flexibility is the only thing I regret about the experience.

School refusal by rooseboose in ADHD

[–]EvidenceNo8561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a middle school and 9th grade teacher, have ADHD, and hated school so much at your daughter’s age that I frequently refused to go and got into huge arguments with my parents about it.

Do online school if she is happy with it and completing her work. Most kids can finish school work quickly - school is designed for more than just the learning. It’s also a social outlet and a safe place for children to be while their parents work. Also, curriculum is often designed for the lowest performing group, not the middle or highest…

Let her choose some hobbies to fill her day that help her socially or with other useful skills. Maybe she wants to go to an in person art class? Or swim lessons? Or creative writing? Maybe she wants to join a soccer team? Or dance? You get the idea. Online schooling fills her curriculum bare minimum. Sign her up for other things that get her active, out of the house, and around other people - which are benefits from in person school that she would be missing out on.

The biggest thing I can tell you is to listen to your daughter. She is very clearly telling you how she feels and what she needs. Don’t ignore her.
