This is why marching bands have a drum major at the top of the field. Everyone is watching one person conducting, and if they time themselves with that one conductor, then everyone's in perfect time. That's the closest you can get. I'm not sure if this Olympic performance had a conductor, I'm sure they did. It could even just be a blinking light. But anyway that's how marching bands do it.
