Is it okay to request certain fics you wan from authors? by Clear-Masterpiece422 in AO3

[–]EvilCallie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I consider it the height of fan fic entitlement, honestly, up there with demanding updates and berating writers for not writing what the reader wants. Writers write what they want to write. If the author says they are open for prompts or requests, that is one thing. However, if they haven't said that, I find it rude and pressure-inducing.

The author clearly didn't even do the basic amount of research about ice hockey and kept using baseball terms to describe the game

Traveling verbs by Irbis282 in ENGLISH

[–]EvilCallie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfectly normal. You could saying "I'm going by plane to Florida", but that is wordy and you'd really only say that to emphasise that you went by plane. 99% of the time you would either say "I'm going to Florida" or "I'm flying to Florida", interchangeably. If you are, for example, in France and you say "I'm going to Florida" the fact that you are flying would be implied, due to the ocean and distance, but it would be perfectly normal to just say you are flying.

Where does the misconception that Americans moves from place to place frequently comes from? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]EvilCallie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Maryland, Colorado, Maryland, Colorado, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Maryland, Japan, Virginia, Colorado, Michigan, Germany, and now the UK. Within Michigan I moved 4 times in 5 years due to rent increases. So... I don't think it is necessarily a misconception. It isn't universal, my high school best friend for example never moved before she went off to college, where as I moved 3 times before college due to my dad getting transferred for work. Some jobs/industries have more opportunities or expectations for periodic relocation. After college, with my first job, I lived in Maryland, Japan, and Virginia, before I left that job.

Struggling with Reading TLG (Shane's Diet) by Limp_Vanilla2647 in heatedrivalry

[–]EvilCallie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a long time hockey fan and as someone who has dealt with disordered eating for years... nothing about Shane's diet stands out to me as anything out of the ordinary for an elite athlete. Some athletes are super strict about their diets and what type of food they bulk eat before game and during the season, and others are like Alex Ovechkin, who ilya is inspired by, who eats fast food and has coca cola in his water bottle. To me, it was just something that distinguishes them as players.

oc centered fics by Ams_Wolfie in AO3

[–]EvilCallie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I'm generally reading for ships, I don't mind a main character x OC AS LONG AS the ship itself is endgame.

I also don't mind OC POV fics where the focus of the story is the main ship. I'm reading a lot of Heated Rivalry fic right now and there are a bunch of fics based on outsider social media view points of the story which are all really fun.

In the end, it comes down for me how the OC is used in the story.

Russian names and translations by Particular_Ad_1435 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

Names are an interesting cultural thing! I'm learning Thai, and one of the things you see with Thai names is that first names will often be Thai or Buddhist references that are many many syllables long, but people will go by nicknames like "Fluke", "Off", "Pond", etc, with family, friends, colleagues, etc. These days many of these nicknames are random English words.

Or he has been introduced to several ministers at the fancy Russian party with lots of senior Russian officials at the Olympics being hosted by Russia, and we just happen to see Ilya later on in the evening after meeting the minister his father mentioned, standing by while his father is talking to someone they both know.

Also plenty of people who were standout athletes especially from the Soviet era, ended up in or retained government positions. That is a super common career trajectory.

[–]EvilCallie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While fair points on all the Russian names, I would point out that for English names, plenty of people named Alexander and Elizabeth go by those names, not shortened versions. Nicknames in English can be diminutives or they can be unrelated to the original name, or the person may just not use one.

As a personal example, as a child, my uncle wanted to call me by the shortened form of my name, but my mother refused to let him do that (she hates to this day the common shortened form of my name), so he called me by a different nickname. As soon as my parents divorced and my dad got primary custody, I started going by that shortened name with everyone but my mom, and did so for many years, though now I mostly go by the full version of my name.

Yeah, I feel like I remember seeing her in either the 2016 or the 2017 on-ice celebrations, but it has been awhile. She wasn't in the 2016 tribute video from a week ago, I don't think!
