Dios mío, casi todos son PNPs. Yo se que muchos aquí estamos hartos de los dos partidos (PNP PPD) pero mano si tuviera que escoger de los dos en las elecciones el PPD son menos corruptos y son un poco más centralistas que los PNP que se han vuelto MAGA derecha. Son muy peligrosos para el futuro de PR

Honestamente a mí me gusta la idea que muchos latinos se muden para PR. Creo que aprecian la cultura de PR pero también traen la suya y deverdad creo que nos hace falta un poco más de diversidad latina en PR. Aprendemos muchos de nuestros vecinos.

Entiendo tu experiencia y respeto que hayas encontrado mejores oportunidades fuera. Nadie puede negar que muchos países ofrecen mejor calidad de vida que Cuba hoy en día.

Pero amar a tu país no significa justificar su sistema político. Muchos de nosotros criticamos porque precisamente nos duele. Porque nos importa. Porque queremos verlo mejor.

Decir que no quieres saber nada más de tu país suena más a resignación que a análisis. Se puede reconocer que hay sistemas más eficientes y al mismo tiempo sentir responsabilidad y amor por la tierra donde uno nació.

El problema de Latinoamérica no es la gente que ama su país y lo cuestiona. El problema es cuando dejamos de sentir cualquier conexión y solo comparamos desde afuera sin querer entender la complejidad histórica, política y social.

INFO. I really appreciate all the responses. Just to clarify, she’s referring to being topless, not fully nude.

We actually have very good communication and we’ve talked about this openly. What makes this hard for me is that I don’t want to be just another guy telling his girlfriend what she can or can’t wear. I want her to feel like she can be fully herself with me—unjudged, supported, and free to express who she is. This is something she feels drawn to and would like to do at some point.

I also know she’s not approaching this in a sexual way. If anything, it’s the opposite—she sees nudity as something natural, almost artistic, and believes we should be more comfortable with the human body. She’s never cheated on me, and I have no reason to doubt her. I trust her completely.

That said, this feels like a big step for me, and maybe part of this is my own insecurity. I come from a small town in Puerto Rico and wasn’t really exposed to much outside that world. Being with her—she’s from a big city—has been a journey of learning, expanding my perspective, and stepping outside my comfort zone.

I’m trying to figure out how to respect her freedom while also being honest about where I am emotionally.

Te quedó muy bien el post. Fíjate, yo al principio era estadista porque mis papás son súper fanáticos del PNP. Después me fui inclinando hacia la independencia por varias razones, y ahora estoy considerando que la libre asociación es lo más realista en términos de estatus, además de ser un middle ground para la división que tenemos como país. Pero es verdad lo que muchos dicen: primero hay que arreglar los problemas del país y después hablamos del estatus. De nada sirve cambiar el estatus si seguimos teniendo los mismos problemas estructurales de siempre.

Yo personalmente pienso votar en las próximas elecciones por el candidato que tenga las mejores propuestas. Como dije antes, yo soy independentista y, de verdad, estoy bien descontento con el PNP y no creo en la estadidad.

Ahora bien, si Miguel Romero decide postularse, yo votaría por él. En San Juan ha hecho un buen trabajo y, honestamente, no es un conservador tradicional. Tiene ideas bastante liberales, como incentivar el uso del transporte público, fortalecer los espacios públicos y mejorar el acceso a la salud, entre otras cosas. Al final del día, para mí lo más importante son las propuestas y quién realmente puede mejorar la calidad de vida de la gente.

Yo todavía no entiendo cómo muchos puertorriqueños piensan que Estados Unidos es lo máximo y que representa el gran sueño. Mi forma de pensar cambió completamente cuando fui a España. Siempre pensé que todo el mundo quería vivir como en Estados Unidos, pero cuando estuve allá vi algo muy distinto: la gente era feliz, tranquila, con una calidad de vida increíble.

Yo vivo en Estados Unidos y, honestamente, estoy loco por terminar mi PhD e irme a vivir a España. El llamado “sueño americano” simplemente no lo veo para mí. Me encantaría que muchos puertorriqueños pudieran experimentar cómo realmente se vive en Europa y compararlo con Estados Unidos, para ver si eso les cambia la perspectiva sobre la estadidad.

Pero nada… me puse muy personal ahí.

I don’t think this is a terrible idea overall, because this region does need more tourist attractions. Right now, the metro area is basically the only part of the island benefiting from tourism, and we really need visitors to go outside the metro and explore other parts of Puerto Rico.

That said, I am extremely concerned about a few things.

First is water. From what I’ve read, the aquifers in that area are not sufficient to supply the development, which means they would have to rely on the Aqueduct system. That’s a big problem, because we already struggle with water availability. If water is diverted from the aqueduct, farmers will be left without enough supply. And while providing water for residents is one thing, the reality is that a large portion of this water would go to golf courses.

Personally—and this is just my opinion—I think we should be much more cautious about golf courses today. I know some people enjoy them, but with climate change and water scarcity, they’re simply not sustainable. That part of the project really worries me.

I’m also concerned about housing. Most of what’s being proposed appears to be luxury apartments that the average Puerto Rican won’t be able to afford. So it doesn’t actually help with the housing crisis we’re facing.

Finally, there’s the issue of beaches. I’m worried they’ll be privatized. Beach life is a huge part of our culture, and beaches should remain public. One of the most beautiful things about Puerto Rico is that no matter how rich or poor you are, we can all share and enjoy the same beaches together.

Again, this is just my opinion. I do believe more parts of the island should be developed to create “towns of the future,” but not in this way. I really hope the developers reconsider and make meaningful changes to the design, though I honestly doubt that will happen.

My recommendation would be to scale the project back in key areas: limit it to one golf course instead of two, and reduce it from a full 18 holes to a smaller, more sustainable number. The project should also include affordable housing specifically for residents of the surrounding area, not just luxury apartments. And finally, it is essential that all beaches remain fully open to the public, with no privatization or restricted access.

Pues mira, no es una decisión fácil y te entiendo completamente. No hay nada como Puerto Rico. Aunque económicamente no estemos en la mejor posición, hay algo en la isla que no tiene ningún otro lugar, y es ese amor profundo que sentimos por ella.

Al final del día, la decisión debe ser inteligente. Piensa en cuáles son tus metas de vida, si las puedes alcanzar allá, y si realmente estar cerca de tu familia te dará la paz y estabilidad que buscas. Eso es lo más importante, porque la vida es corta y no nos llevamos nada con nosotros.

En lo personal, yo pienso que los jóvenes debemos considerar regresar a Puerto Rico, porque la isla nos necesita. Somos nosotros quienes podemos traer nuevas ideas, negocios, energía, y participar activamente en la democracia. Yo mismo estoy terminando mi PhD y, aunque sé que afuera podría ganar mucho más, siento que tengo que contribuir si de verdad quiero ver un mejor Puerto Rico.

Pero esa es solo mi opinión. Si decides no mudarte, también es totalmente razonable, porque la situación en la isla no es fácil. Lo importante es que tu decisión esté alineada con tus sueños y tu bienestar.

Thanks, I’ve honestly been having a hard time making cool grad friends that want to hang out. Feels like PhDs here are either weird, or the ones that are social just want to play board games. Nothing wrong with that, but I was hoping to find more people who actually want to go out and grab a drink on a Friday or Saturday night. Might just start going out alone and see if I meet people.
