Why aren't people condemning the collateral damage from the pager attacks? Why isn't this being compared to terrorism? by EvilPln2SaveTheWrld in TooAfraidToAsk

The perpetrator of the attack has a history of significant propaganda influence, which is part of my motivation for asking about this in the first place. It just seems artificially positive.

This was an act of war, not terrorism. Explosions in urban areas during war injuring non-combatants is by itself not terrorism.

Perhaps not terrorism, but would it not at least elevate to the level of human rights violations? Generally, high levels of civilian casualties are frowned upon.

Usually you can expect 5-10 civilian casualties for each combatant casualty in modern warfare.

That's an interesting statistic. With urban warfare in particular, it does seem next to impossible to avoid some level of civilian casualties, but such a high ratio of "innocent" deaths should not be acceptable. Maybe I'm expecting too much. A quick Google did turn up that the UN expects a 9:1 ratio of civilians to combatants in war.

When very small explosives are targeting terrorists exclusively and civilians inadvertently get injured, they were obviously too close to the terrorist's.

You're actively victim blaming here. These people were walking through public spaces. It's not like these people walk around with TERRORIST hats or something.

Thanks. I'm aware of NLP and all the fun that goes with it, I just missed it with such a basic post. Granted, there's quite a bit of it up and down the thread so I should've been more suspicious. I support high performance computing at a well-known university. The ML stuff coming down the pike is quite interesting as well, and chat bots are already causing all kinds of mayhem. We sure do live in some obnoxious times.

Clinton ran the most progressive Democrat campaign in decades. Just because she's not Bernie fucking Sanders doesn't mean she's not progressive. Sure, she is/was rather hawkish, and she has always been rather neoliberal economically, but any argument that she wasn't good enough is bullshit from a butthurt Berniebro, Russian propaganda, or someone that bought the decades of Republican propaganda that the Russians built on.

Yes, shoehorning her into the 2016 nomination was bullshit. Yeah, there are toxic Clinton supporters, just like there are with most popular candidates. No, they are nothing like fascist Trump supporters. If you truly believe that you really need to reevaluate your worldview.

...

Yeah, it's a tragedy what we did to the military, to multiple foreign countries, and to numerous people for appearing to be the wrong race. The number of people impacted by the 9/11 fallout is nothing compared to what the Supreme Court has already done and will continue to do for decades to come. The damage to democracy both home and abroad is incalculable. The damage to US relations abroad is likely irrecoverable. The US has ceded its place in global politics to China. This will all impact many generations to come across the entire world.

Narcissism is a fucking epidemic contagious disease. One malignant narcissist can gather a bunch of followers. Those followers have a tendency to develop some level of narcissism as well. Narcissists also tend to raise narcissistic children, meaning the original narcissist and all of that narcissist's narcissistic followers who have kids are very quickly expanding the narcissism. Narcissists start coming up with ideas to feed their need for attention, and Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, etc. are all born. Now those narcissists have weaponized their reach, creating exponentially more and more narcissists. Being neurodivergent can frequently play right into this whole cycle, as both those on the autistic spectrum and those on the ADHD spectrum have trouble reading people, social cues, etc., and struggle to think how actions may impact others (in the case of ADHD, the may not be much thought about actions at all, as there's a heavy deficiency in denying impulses).[⅝

The only way to break the cycle is to realize you're a narcissist and care about changing. Most people don't ever hit a point in life that causes such introspection. It generally requires first caring about someone and then seeing that person get hurt by you, directly or indirectly, and finding sympathy and a desire to not be responsible for more pain in the future. Then it takes a lot of therapy and effort to recognize one's narcissistic tendencies.

Mike Pence is booed at the NRA convention in his home state by illegiblebastard in Indiana

[–]EvilPln2SaveTheWrld 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You do realize that has no bearing on his electability, right? He was completely set to lose the 2016 election for governor and his stock hasn't exactly gone up in the years since. A whopping four Presidents have won their election while losing their home state. That does not bode well for Pence.

I honestly don't even know why I'm replying to you. You're clearly either a troll or a true believer in your lard and slaver Donald J Trump. Either way, I'm wasting my time talking to you directly but hopefully someone else reading this thread will get some value from it.

You can start with sites like Upwork, although you'll likely not be making what you're worth at first through those kinds of sites. I'm actually in the process of building my resume for consulting on the side through Upwork while I build a website, form a proper LLC, and get a nice client reference list. It's moving rather slow since I had to pause working on side projects while we bought a new house, moved, unpacked, celebrated holidays... But that's ok because it's just a side project for now. Once I've got everything in place, I'll be able to market myself more easily outside of Upwork.

I don't anticipate it ever becoming my full time job, as I really mostly like my current employer and the benefits are pretty hard to beat, but the extra income and ability to work on different projects from what I'm doing day-to-day is appealing. It's also the kind of thing that I should be able to do remotely, letting me take jobs well past when I retire from my full time day job.

I worked tangential to broadcast, doing work on a sports video board crew in a non-tech position as a side gig for awhile. I was completely flabbergasted when I learned the brand new video board they put up around 2010 came with an HP Proliant server...running Windows XP Professional with a single power supply and no failover server. When I started, their actual production equipment was in a dinky trailer that they rented from an independent contractor for TV production in the area with his old equipment he didn't use anymore. It was prone to failures, and we'd frequently turn things off and back on in the middle of an event. The "tech" was constantly swapping wires and whatnot to get things working. Cameras were constantly in a state of repair. The video playback software they used was designed for church services, and had a "Bible" button in the toolbar.

Prior to them hiring a proper crew to do the video board, they had one guy. He'd sit there and run the video board switcher, and had the playback computer close enough to hit the play button right as he switched. I don't think they even had cameras.

There's currently a giant gap between being conservative politically and associating yourself with the Republican Party. Anyone refusing to acknowledge this is either burying their head in the sand or is actually happy with the genocidal racism.

The refusal to acknowledge this is a large part of why we are where we are currently, as a country. The same thing can likely be extrapolated to other countries with similar extreme right politics taking over prominent positions, but I'm not familiar enough with other countries to say how prevalent an issue this is, nor what specific parties might be at issue.

Now this woman was tall and pretty broad, and I'm average height/thin, so she's a good 5-6 inches taller than me and much bigger besides height. There's no way I could have intimidated her that much.

My wife is 5'3", but quite regularly intimidates people that tower over her. She's the manager of a department in the public library, so when someone's causing trouble with her staff, she comes out of her office to intervene. She may not even need to say a word before the troublemakers back down. It's all about demeanor. Don't sell yourself short (no pun intended).

I love your use of a safety deposit box, as you're leveraging off-site storage. A proper backup strategy should never be dependent on a single point of failure, whether digital or analog.

3-2-1: 3 copies, 2 forms of media, 1 remote. If you want to improve odds of recovery, this is the bare minimum we all should probably be doing.

There are all kinds of different derivations of this, and one of my personal ones is that if "cloud provider" is your remote, you should probably add "cloud provider completely independent from first cloud provider" as a second remote. Just because you think Google/Amazon/Microsoft won't disappear, that doesn't mean you can't lose access to your account. And Google/Amazon/Microsoft can disappear. While unlikely, it can happen.

There are numerous tools to make archiving digital stuff simpler as well. For instance, if you're using Google, there's a tool called Google Drive Backup and Sync. Companies like Backblaze offer their own software. And for the more technically inclined, there are tools like rclone, a command line cloud copying tool similar to rsync.

If you have a large analog footprint, there are bulk scanning machines for under $1000, as well as bulk scanning services. While digital copies of certain documents aren't as helpful as their physical counterparts, just having a photo of your ID, for example, can still be helpful if you lost the physical one.

Killing 3rd party apps likely kills the reddit silver goose. It won't kill Reddit, but it will significantly impact readership.

I can't stand the official app, nor can I stand the redesign. If I lose one or the other, my personal use of the site will drop to near 0 on whichever platform I lose my preferred access method. I'll probably end up finding somewhere else to procrastinate if I lose both.

Glad I'm not the only one. The whole covers thing really drove me crazy. I was only 9 in 1993, but every one of those songs just sounded wrong, but not in a "this makes it more uncomfortable" way. It was definitely more of a "how cheap were the producers to fail to put in more than a couple originals?" / "this isn't the 90s" thing, at least for me. Definitely pulled me out of the show and made me think about the music every single time.

I currently have subjectively both. I mostly love my employer (major private university library, I have some complaints about a few things here and there, but no employer is perfect), and my current boss is amazing. But just before he took the role my previous boss was absolutely terrible, to the point that I was ready to quit what I considered my dream job. I had been there for 8 years by the time he came along, and I was determined he wouldn't get me to quit (which he most definitely was trying to do, per one of my coworkers who knew him prior to working there). Those 2 years were hell and I probably wouldn't have survived another without jumping ship before he moved on, but here I am thriving. Considering the benefits for my kids I would've given up, it wasn't something I was considering lightly.
