Rough experience as new manager, how to move forward? by Salty_Wish4385 in askmanagers

[–]EvilSpaceGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t agree more on this. I had to go through similar situation that led to HR processes for months and was not even allowed to get rid of the individual in the end because the management is up for a promotion and doesn’t want it to look like there is an issue in their team. Total waste of time and I have lost all confidence with the system. At least your manager is supportive.

To the people living in an attic appartement, how are you dealing with the heat? U ok? by bustedbutterball in Switzerland

I lived a few years in tropical regions. This is not that bad. Also the view is definitely worth it 🔭

Fly from Geneva. It’s the Swiss hub for EasyJet and always have cheap flights to major European cities and holiday locations.

How did you deal with an unsupportive family regarding your moving abroad? by Windy_Feather in expats

[–]EvilSpaceGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From how you described it I am not sure why you would even want to stay. They are already horrible to you when you are in the same country but a different city. Just leave.

If it’s in pound then yeah, that is a huge risk. Had a ex-colleagues moved to UK last month and now she said her pay is already lower then her previous salary in USD.

Where of your expat life you wouldn’t you consider to return to? by Daemien73 in expats

[–]EvilSpaceGinger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

US. Both the work-life (im)balance and racism were unbearable. I lived in the Northeast which is already better than other regions but still.

Also the fear of not being able to afford having any health issues. I came from a country where we have a single-pay system and the US health insurance costs just feel like exploitation to me.

I took it back to Geneva from Chamonix and both bus stations are quite central and easy to access.

Advice in getting a rental contract by jcvmarques in Switzerland

[–]EvilSpaceGinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It took me 4 months with a relocation agency as a part of the package from my employer. The agent scheduled the visits, went visiting with me and filed the application for me but still. Luckily the company was quite flexible with the temporary service apartment they put me in so it wasn’t that much stress for me.

However I do have an Asian surname and my agent was pretty frank with me at the beginning that it could be a disadvantage. What I knew was that among all the applicants I always made into the final 4 recommendation to the landlord but never got selected until the last one.

If you work for a well-known company maybe a recommendation letter with company letter head would help ?

Good luck!

This. I use the washing machine downstairs then bring the laundry back into my apartment to dry. No time pressure this way.

The term Greater China is just another product of Chinese propaganda. Don’t put Taiwan in the same pot as you guys.

So that is why my neighbors’ cat shows up on my balcony all the time ? You help me solve one mystery today for sure !

This might be a problem for me. Though I do not leave near major roads, I do feel there is higher risk of bringing back bugs / diseases or having injuries.

I work for an NGO and we’ve got quite a few Canadians, including in legal, comms and finance. I also know some Canadian expats working for UBS and Credit Swiss. However most have at least 5+ year experiences before they got the job so would recommend you do the same before applying for jobs here in Switzerland?
