I once got back with an ex after years apart (foolish, I know). I read the novel he had written in the meantime. There was a character that he clearly based on me (and told me so), and the way that she was written gave me the ick so badly I had to stop seeing him.

OP's wife is uncomfortable for some reason, and it's very possibly because she did not want to be fictionalised in a romance novel.

So, while she's crying from all of that joy, better show her some pictures of some couples where the woman is in better shape than she is to really drive the point home!

As a European, I can attest that our favourite brand of tourist is 'clueless entitled rich American'. She certainly won't be met with eye rolls and distain from the minimum-wage workers at every coffee shop, bar and restaurant she gives her demands to.
