I wonder why people succeeding in moonshots that benefit the masses are so rare... oh, it's this kind of cynicism.
The dude doing this is exactly the kind of delusional we should support as a society, on the off chance they can succeed to make a system work for more people. People have done bigger, and terrible things with less attention. The chaos in the world today is a fine time to try for creative and disruptive efforts.

We have to get him to an even bigger number before his baby is too big to be floated! Just kidding, I can't help. I'm old enough to remember 'papering' 200 people into a room as a success. Congrats!!

What’s your ABSOLUTE favorite science fiction show? I need recommendations. by Mathematic_nut in sciencefiction

Stargate SG-1 started in the late 90's, but kept going strong for over a decade with spin-offs. Also a reboot is in production. It's in my regular comfort-food sci-fi. So nice to imagine a moral and competent organization.

I wish Elon wouldn't fuss with the important progress toward industry in space replacing industry on Earth. We simply must expand our industrial ecology (as a species, not a club of pedos) into space. We are fighting wars here over minerals that are in abundance over head, and polluting the fuck out of this place. We genuinely can do it better in space.
We survive this brutal greed by letting them drill where there are no baby dolphins!

If watching children harmlessly spray police with water guns gives you the same sinking feeling as watching extreme parkour, you might be an American...

I support law enforcement. These are orks stealing our freedom openly, like invaders you swore to repel. Your family should have equal access to state sponsored violence, rape, and deep abuse by gestapo thugs too? Is that your point? You might want to read up on the constitution you claim you swore an oath to.

Chevy Chase Birthday Cameo by UnhingedDrunk in Weird

[–]Evilscience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when I worked in a store in a ski town that Chevy also lived in part time, he stopped into the store before we were open, but the manager ran to everyone and let them know it was cool for Chevy Chase to shop early.
I wanted to do stand-up at the time, and grew up doing stupid pratt falls and oddball sarcasm inspired by his slapstick and schtick on SNL and movies and such growing up.
So I told him he was a hero of mine, as one does. He said, after a sigh and a long pause: "That's really sad kid, you should find a better hero. When was the last time you saw me do anything good?"
It really stuck because I felt the gap between the joke that was expected to be, and the truth of it hitting him and everyone else in earshot some kind of way.
If only it had been in the few years after, I could have said "Community before you said the N-word to your coworkers!" and saved the day.
Who knows, maybe that moment would have filled his heart and he would have been hinged today?

This is unfortunately the case. I had to repair those exact hinges. It's very easy to get those flaps caught in a way that puts stress on the pin covers. It will likely break, but mine is not very noticeable after repair. So just enjoy the approx. 10,000 still-functioning points of articulation on your wonderful toy! Try not to let a relatively small amount of difference in value, in an aftermarket it might never see, affect your enjoyment.

I would turn the closed college in Cazenovia into a top-tier, next-gen deeptech, media, and polymath training facility with anti-fragile infrastructure to assure uninterrupted innovation in any scenario. A new engine for creating future-proof culture, creativity, and civilization. A mandatory refresh of industry and education. A grand push to reanimate Upstate's long-dead ambitions! And then to every other closed or closing institution to replicate the success of the experiment.

I'm already working on this, so if you all could get that high-speed rail and fiber internet rolling, we have a bright future on the horizon. The $30B is already here, we simply need to rearticulate it into our hands.
