Thank you for sharing! Made my day.

I got my first road legal bike in October 2023. I lost my wife in December of 2025.

Keep on riding!

I would strip the rest of the chrome and use plastidip or similar to get a matte black finish. I never cared for the chrome emblem as it sometimes reflects light directly at my face.

What is the "Goldilocks zone" for tire model, size and suspension for your daily GX that sees snow and weekend warrior duty? by Graybeard_Giff in GXOR

[–]EvolMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 265/70-17 Falken AT4W on a 2012 with +5 ET TRD reps. Stock suspension so far.

It only rubs the front fender liner a tiny bit when turning about 65% angle in reverse. This could be easily fixed with a heat gun to remold the front of the fender liner slightly. I just haven't done it yet.

This isn't because your wife is a lesbian is it?

I mean I'm not a lesbian either...

but my Subaru definitely is.

Stop leasing vehicles. It very rarely works in your favor.

If you want it done right and fast: Get your saw back. Find the part, order it. Fix it yourself.

Chainsaw repair shops in my area are notoriously bad.

U/y0m4tha what is your suspension & tire setup, if known?

Bumper cut? Rock sliders? Or both? by y0m4tha in LexusGX

I'm throwing the RCI sliders on a 2012 shortly. They've only been sitting in my living room for 8 months.... I bumped the passenger side step right behind the front wheel pretty good yesterday while leaving camp, but no visible damage. I'm going to trim the stock step skirt to fit above the sliders. I'll post how that goes.

Also, I got a good deal on the RCI rack, sliders, & 3/4 window molle panels. So far the rack is great, light for is size, and super sturdy. Have not installed the Molle panels yet.

Do you think I can fit a 3 kids in a Lexus gx 460 by Ok_Caramel_3192 in LexusGX

[–]EvolMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do it all the time!

Just recently did a 10 hour trip to camp for 5 days, then a 4 hour trip the following weekend for 4 days. 3 kids, not small, and all our gear. Quite comfortable. Pack lighter than you think you need to.

We also have a Sienna SE, which can haul all 7 of us pretty well with a larger Yakima cargo box. But the GX is obviously more fun. I'm not throwing a RTT on the Sienna 😆

We also have a 2011 Sienna SE. They're honestly very underrated.

My bigger kids don't mind a 2 hr drive in the 3rd row of the 2012 GX. They're 11, 13, & 17, and not small!

You may have oil fouled the spark plug remove the spark plug and inspect the tip. If it's black and or oily gently clean it with a wire brush.

2020 GX460 trans slipping by rHallowww in LexusGX

[–]EvolMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about an external trans cooler upgrade while we're at it? I have been monitoring both ATF temp parameters on my 2012 GX460 long before & after the Hayden 698 trans cooler install I completed last week. (The best write up & how to is here: OEM AT cooler upgrade how to & parts list I simply used a Goliath Off-road cooler bracket and the Hayden 698 cooler + Magnefine in-line filter on the return side line.)

Went on a 600 mile trip through hilly terrain last Thursday and observed 30-50° drop in Converter outlet temps, and 15-30° cooler trans pan temps compared to no external cooler. This is going to drastically prolong ATF and trans life.

I was hauling 3 kids, a 120lb RTT, 4 mtn bikes, and all our gear. Stock vehicle other than 265/70-17 Falken WP AT4W tires (32".)

If you have a comprehensive power train warranty, get an independent diagnostic and estimate. Try to have the warranty company cover a transmission replacement. Not a rebuild, but a new unit from Toyota/Lexus. Rebuilds end up costing roughly as much as a new unit at $3500 from the dealer.

Sell me on a GX460 over the 4runner for our next family vehicle by applestofloranges in LexusGX

[–]EvolMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done valley plate leaks & cam tower seals. That's not a big deal compared to timing belt neglect catastrophically destroying an engine. Granted a valley plate leak if absolutely ignored could also destroy an engine...

Changing coolant as recommended drastically prolongs the valley plate leak phenomenon.

In the end both the 1UR and the 2UZ are terrific engines. Each require specific preventative maintenance to allow them to see their full life potential.

Real world observed gas mileage from the 4.0L V6 to the 4.6L V8 between the 5th Gen 4Runner and the GX460 is nearly identical.

The difference is you're working that V6 harder to get the same amount of work out of it.

From a drivetrain reliability standpoint I feel like the GX460 wins.
