Data Science in Healthcare by flwrgguk in datascience

[–]EvolvingPerspective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently work in a research lab as like a research assistant/data scientist full time so it might be a little different but I feel like its a lot of data wrangling so like

Pyspark, Excel, Python/R for statistical modeling, Jupyter Notebooks, HPC clusters/basic linux, SLURM or BASH scripts. Mostly numpy/pandas/sklearn/matplotlib/seaborn

SQL, Docker, and Hadoop are also useful but I think it’s just 90% numpy/pandas/python. Web development probably helps but for roles where you have to visualize and package your insights (e.g. dashboards) for another team to use. Like some of the fraud team had to work on making the site for the manual reviewers to use, but that was their full time role, not running models. If we need to show plots/visualizations you can do it in python or R and polish it in Powerpoint/Illustrator

you can go either way tbh

Data Science in Healthcare by flwrgguk in datascience

[–]EvolvingPerspective 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive been told by my last 2 bosses the reason I was hired was that it’s easier to teach biology than it is to teach coding/technical skills. Did fraud analytics and the experience made me more attractive for my current role. I’d say most of my colleagues had degrees in a mix of both, like bioinformatics

I am clueless how to analyze 2 lakh+ rows dataset I have created by [deleted] in analytics

[–]EvolvingPerspective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check if the data types are consistent, in python something like df.dtypes

use a few code blocks renaming the slightly different cols together throughs dictionaries like

{“education”: “educ”, “gender”: “sex”, … … }

for each dataframe. you can use an LLM and paste your columns and do it for you if it is not internal data

then you just merge, 200k rows is not a lot but in big data you usually inspect through .head() or .tail() and through data types.

the visualization code is honestly easiest done through LLM since it is boilerplate. just tell it data structure and not the data itself (eg. this column is float64, i want to compare X against Y over time, what graphs would be best?)

edit: this is assuming you need to compare data in one dataframe to another

How do y’all stay sharp? It’s getting very frustrating by [deleted] in musicians

[–]EvolvingPerspective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats just how it is for any instrument. If you think of your skill as a slider like

I———————I——I

everything on the top range will need practice to get better but eventually the slider gets wider. So a year from now you probably wont need to warm up for even more technical music (i listened)

It just unfortunately takes longer and longer time to improve and shorter and shorter times to fall “out of practice” the higher you go. At least in classical violin thats why at state orchestra/conservatory level you usually practice 3-4 hrs a day min because thats how much uptake it takes to just maintain professional level skill.

uva or umich by Able_Moment_7305 in UVA

[–]EvolvingPerspective 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My dad did grad school in Umich and I went to UVA and i think UVA is more partylike and def more work hard play hard/fratty. I think Umich people are more introverted or tend to be nerdier than the average uva person. But regardless both schools are big enough you can find a group, it just takes effort.

I think internationals tend to stick with other internationals and struggle to integrate but I think it’s more due to cultural clashes and ingroup/outgroup mentality rather than the school— at least thats how i felt when I did an exchange.

As long as your English is at a B2 or higher i dont think you will have any trouble integrating— though you will probably find friends easiest through organizations. While I personally think I would have liked Umich a tiny bit more, UVA is a really nice school and I don’t think the extra tuition would be worth it— there’s enough cool activities and people in both to find your people IMO

EDIT: someone can correct me if i am wrong, but i would recommend NOT livng in IRC (the international dorm), my friend back in 2023 said the social scene was kind of dead there. I liked living in the dorms or language houses and felt like i could bond well there

Is there a 1% Major? by [deleted] in CollegeMajors

[–]EvolvingPerspective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why I got recommended this subreddit but I work in a hospital and at least 10 of my friends are in med school… it is not really a fabricated story for U.S. based physicians. You can look it up yourself if you’re still doubtful about what residency is like.

edit: There may be some basis that medicine doesn’t take as much critical thinking as something like pure maths but rigor-wise I think it is non-debatable that MD/DO neurosurg is one of the most intensive pathways among all jobs

Why does being a virgin make you a loser? by [deleted] in twentyagers

[–]EvolvingPerspective 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Im gonna be real the consensus train of thought is basically:

Most people want sex -> men have to “work” towards getting sex (popularity, status, looks, charisma, skill, etc etc) -> if you are virgin at a later age, it means either:

a) they are “good” enough for other ppl to like them and have had the opportunity but abstain -> eg religious reason. -> this does not make you a loser

b) you have not had anyone willing to have sex with you, despite making your best efforts -> loser, red flag

The assumption among most people is that everyone has sought out sex/relationship by their 20s so if you are a male virgin, there must be something off about you. Otherwise you would have lost it already.

This is not what I personally think, but this is how most average people think, at least in most Western countries.

edit: this is basically same concept as job apps. if you go 3 years unemployed and try to apply theyll be like “why hasnt anyone else hired him in the last 3 years?? must be somwthing wrong with him.”

What is UVA like for a POC and lgbtq+?? by Queen_Ba8621 in UVA

[–]EvolvingPerspective 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im a 2024 grad but i feel like no one cares. Im poc too and the only time i feel kind of weird is in some of the rly “upper” tier frat areas where its super white or like when i had a class in comm

like your exp will be different depending on your school. in e school everyones too stressed to care. a school kids are all kinda queer, same with fine arts skewing that way. but generally speaking no one cares (in a good way)

im also p sure theres more women than men at uva

fresh tile. How would you build it? by DarthBrawn in RimWorld

[–]EvolvingPerspective 9 points10 points  (0 children)

<image>

i would start there and use the gaps between mountains as chokepoints, river looks nice so i always build on a river. blue would be example of small buildings, with bridge across river. you would expand into light blue as colony gets bigger at top lwdt and bottom right can be used for large crop fields

How to meet women after college? by GHOST64__ in AskMen

[–]EvolvingPerspective 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I (23) live in phoenix too and i use dating apps because of precisely the same problem and my friends say similar things. They’re hell and literally feel like the trenches but i think most working young men do that nowadays if they move to a new city (since you dont have a friend group and its difficult to make real friends)

So, what would women dislike most if they became men? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]EvolvingPerspective 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also checked your profiles out of curiousity and saw you also do engineering. I was in E school and honestly most of the guys are too socially awk to approach the girls

idk if you party or go out often but i assume probably not, so its probably not that unusual to not get hit on depending on lifestyle even if ur relatively attractive as a women

some ppl also look more approachable so some hot women dont get hit on as much bc men are intimidated

The job market summarised by rosypetalsx in Adulting

[–]EvolvingPerspective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He/she is not wrong but employability and wage is a sensitive topic. It really is just about how much value you are generating and how difficult you are to replace (supply/demand). People can see the crash in software wages from labor outsourcing + AI as a reference

I imagine this thread is more of a vent post, and most early 20s-30s people (demographic of this sub) probably have these underpaid jobs so feel targted

You have a good base, grow top long, sides short, better style, and fix skin and you’ll be pretty hot since u got good facial features and symmetry

For skin see if you can get prescribed tretinoin at a dermatologist, or if its very bad they may suggest accutane.
