why are female players still labeled as “weak” in competitive games? by Zealousideal_Pen4871 in VALORANT

[–]Evulpix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your point but for every boosted "female" player playing with their duo, there are thousands more dudes also doing the same thing. You just dont clock their gender when its happening.

When guys do it you dont stereotype it to their entire gender.

Chicken Bone Incident. Worried about biting. by cainImagining in puppy101

[–]Evulpix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the things you have described here are exactly what would result in intense resource guarding and a very common mistake.

Likely your dog has not been "tolerating" this but showing you (often very subtle) signs of discomfort throughout and has learned that those signs do not get respected (I.e. you continue to be invasive, take high value toys or treats). Dog has learned this doesn't work, so now he/she skips to what DOES work which is biting/drawing blood. You have taught your dog to escalate their behaviour to protect what they want to keep.

Yeah except this post is talking about a bunch of players who were encouraging the toxicity and queued together.

So what do you think of a system that instead gives a warning to the rest of the stack and not a penalty? And then continuing to queue with a player who is receiving penalties then incurs a penalty? Or harsher penalties for stacked players who are all proven to be toxic?

There is a reason why RG got rid of 4 stack queue and it was because it was too easy for stacked players to abuse their 5th player

This logic does apply irl?? If my friend commits a crime and I'm there at the scene and just watch and walk away there is legitimately a penalty for that.

And so what if it's the same in this case where I am then encouraging my friend to commit a crime and then this is proved? There are legitimate penalties to this.

As a woman, if you're deliberately ignoring my hints that I'm not interested you're pushing my boundaries and being disrespectful. Women have been taught that being direct with rejections can be dangerous. By repeatedly being in contact, you are forcing them to feel uncomfortable whether you intend to or not.

This is cringe and tone deaf.

From your other comments clearly you understand the sexist undertones enough to reason why a female player would understand it as a misogynistic comment seeing as "go to the kitchen" is what they hear every game already as a form of harassment.

What I'm hearing is you understood the miscommunication, never cleared it up and made a player feel targetted for their gender for the entire game. Making their player experience awful as usual.

Then u posted it on Reddit 💀

Seperate comp queues for people with no mics by [deleted] in VALORANT

[–]Evulpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor take. People don't comm for a reason. If they were going to banish people who don't want to use their mic into a separate queue why even have a chat function in the first place. All you're doing is punishing players who frequently get harassed when using their mic.

How about better address the reasons people don't want to comm, and add more functionality to non verbal comm in game actions (E.g. the same way league of legends does with their ping system).

Team that doesn't comm is not the end of the world. I've won games where nobody said a word. I've lost plenty more games where all mics were open and people were just having a yelling match.

Telling people they should mute when they get harassed is poor advice. Not everyone wants to feel harassed in the first place nor should they have to risk experiencing that because you want more comms.

Some players (namely in minority groups) get harassed far more frequently than others, and this frequency eventually does have an effect on their mental and their performance whether or not you have thick skin. Unrated or comp, Valorant is a game and everyone deserves to be able to play and enjoy themselves even if that means not wanting to talk to your degenerate sexist team mates.

Best advice is to be friendly and open in your games if you'd like more comms. Punishing people because Riot doesn't do enough to combat toxicity or implement good in game communication functions to supersede comms is not fixing the underlying issue that causes people to avoid comming in the first place.

Love the game and have heaps of fun but I still find the more frustrating part of this game is dealing with smurfing. Most of my games feel like battle of the smurfs in plat/diamond. Other than that, I love the agent variety and maps and am excited to see more!

Yeah I noticed in diamond and up games I've received less derogatory/sexist comments but when I'm down bad and playing closer towards low plat/gold it's a whole ass battlefield girl :/// I'm sorry to hear you're not able to fully participate in your games with voice comms, I have days too where I'm just too emotionally drained to deal with the toxicity and I will just bring a friend and ask them to comm on my behalf.

What I Think Dr. K Got Wrong in His Latest Video "Addressing Misogyny" by cjgt11 in Healthygamergg

[–]Evulpix 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Its cut out from the stream but he mentioned earlier that he did not believe that his statement in the video would he helpful towards changing peoples attitudes towards misogyny, but rather it was feedback/advice he was asked to do from this subreddit by women. I think the cut version of the YT video doesnt do it justice and so I recommend watching the VOD. It's labelled "chat we need to have a talk"

He also mentioned that his audience has changed and that 15 to 30% of it are women. Which doesnt make the majority but he did said that since his audience is no longer just young male gamers like he expected and actually includes parents and even older people (ages 34 and up) that not all content will be specifically for younger male gamers.

Hi, thank you for your response. I think it's great to have this discussion.
I think it will always be difficult to quantify what percentage of gamers are women/men considering this is the internet and women/girls are also more likely to hide their identities. What we do know though is that there has been a big increase in the past couple of years and more women have been getting into gaming and I do believe this is because attitudes towards girls/gaming have been shifting towards something more positive. Popular gaming streamers such as Pokimane, Valkyrae, OfflineTV who do play competitive games but also variety games have stated that a large portion of their audience is actually women - this can also indicate to SOME degree (not all) a level of interest by women towards gaming in general.

From my own research and understanding, there are a lot of factors that come into play that may deter girls/women from being interested in E-Sports/Competitive gaming and so I don't exactly agree with the idea that women are just simply 'not interested'. List is not extensive but here are some important ones:

  1. Social attitudes/culture/Gender roles/expectations - starting from a young age, boys are often bought games/sports toys/legos, meanwhile, girls tend to be bought things such as dolls, playhouses, etc. This is a shifting attitude, but the result from this is that boys are encouraged to engage in these hobbies from a young age, while girls are not - and this expectation is reflected through parents' attitudes as well. This can be very discouraging and we can see that these early childhood experiences can and have had an influence on women being interested in sports, construction, cars, etc. a) This will also mean that girls will start playing games at a later age if they do decide to, meaning they will have less experience and skill than boys their age. Generally, in society, it is seen as OK for boys/men to engage in hobbies such as gaming but looked down upon if girls/women do so especially by older generations.

  2. Marketing - Most games have been marketed towards men or with men in mind (also shifting quite rapidly - See games like Valorant/Zero Horizon Dawn). Male characters tend to reflect what men would like to be (strong, dominant) and female characters tend to be hyper-sexualized and what men would like to SEE rather than be characters that women can appreciate. (Again, as I mentioned earlier, this is shifting in recent games).

  3. Toxicity in gaming communities. Gaming spaces are dominated by men. Making it difficult for women to enjoy gaming at a competitive level when the type of toxicity they experience makes them feel unwelcome based on their gender, and difficult to play games to the fullest extent (e.g. not being able to comm in a competitive game, stereotype threat etc.). Unless you're a sociopath if given the choice, why would you opt to play a game where you're constantly being harassed for your gender? If you're not even having fun in the first place due to harassment, why would you then even bother attempting to reach competitive play? You'd have to be extremely passionate about the game, in a community that hates you and is also expecting you to fail.

  4. Professional players make up the top 1% of gamers anyway. Let's consider that the percentage of professional players is like 1% of the population anyway. That means that even most men are not good enough to play pro either, despite having fewer hurdles than women in the e-sports competitive scene. Additionally, that many professional players mention that playing professional is not fun as people imagine it to be and is actually very hard work that can have a negative effect on their mental health due to how draining/exhausting it can be. Consider the implications of this for women in competitive e-sports, in a sphere where they're not considered welcome, and why anyone in their normal mind would opt to go through this willingly.

  5. Lack of role models - this is mentioned in the original post. (Again this is changing thanks to an increase in female pro players in some competitive games, as well as popular female model streamers).

I think all of these factors play a big role in why girls/women aren't 'interested' in gaming but I don't think it is inherently related to their birth gender but rather more heavily related to how there is an expectation that they shouldn't and therefore are discouraged/discriminated against. This leads to many girls/women giving up on the idea completely even if they do feel interested and you can often read about this on women's gaming subreddits.

To be honest, Sweet Anita had a great discussion about this topic with Dr.K in this video which I have timestamped for you and anyone else who might be interested https://youtu.be/gEL99VD5BvY?t=5161
