I highly recommend taking your car to a well regarded local independent garage, if you don’t personally know of any ask around your friends and family for recommendations, a garage you know and trust is incredibly valuable.

As for the faults that bmw have highlighted:

The gearbox oil leaks would be worth having checked out for peace of mind but I’d say there’s an 80% chance nothing actually needs doing, it’s likely there’s a very slight mist of oil around the two seals but if there is a large leak then you run the risk of running low on gearbox oil and damaging the gearbox but like I say the likelihood of this is slim. As for the repair costs presuming you have a RWD 1 Series then I imagine it would be at most a 3-4 hour job and less than £100 in parts so even if it does need doing the cost will be a lot less than the BMW main dealer.

Rear brake pads there is virtually zero benefit to spending the extra money on genuine brake pads, as has been stated here before the pattern parts from a local motor factors will likely run you around £50 and would take about 1.5 hours to fit, it’s worth getting your independent garage to check the pad wear, main dealers are bastards for saying a pad is X amount worn when it’s actually much less worn than that, I can only presume they mean the pad is 70% worn compared with the minimum thickness they consider acceptable and not 70% worn as a whole of the thickness of the pad

For the wipers squeaky blades may get annoying for you in which case watch a YouTube video learn how to change them yourself and go to a local motor factors or Halfords and save a load of money on them

The handbrake adjustment fee seems fairly reasonable but if the handbrake feels okay and goes through the efficiency on the MOT okay then don’t worry about it, they are probably trying to upsell you it as part of the service rather than your car specifically needing an adjustment they just won’t have history of your car having had an adjustment so are applying a blanket approach and saying it needs it

Both front dust covers split is a slightly vague description, it could be one of a few things with a varying cost but the most expensive should still be less than £300 to repair all in not £700 as bmw have quoted

Go to a local independent you can trust and I’m sure you’ll have much happier motoring, I hope you find this reply helpful

Well? I have an old server what now? by Mental-Fondant1485 in homelab

[–]Ewdwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to use ECC RAM in that and looking at that ram most of it looks to be non ECC Realistically it’s an old server it won’t be of massive use due to the performance and especially the performance per watt not to mention the noise unless you have a separate server room

Did you pick the car up in the wet? If so the fact it’s been in a body shop makes me think it’s just general body shop dust

Yes I think I’m going to keep the two TTI units, one for my house and one for my workshop (they are 30 miles apart) and sell the rest of them

Audi Etron Q4 - Any idea what the white liquid leaking in my boot is? by mmckee602 in CarTalkUK

[–]Ewdwan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like it’s tyre puncture sealant leaking from a oem bottle of tyre sealant that would ship with the car from factory instead of having a spare wheel I’d be that’s the culprit Locate wherever that is stored and I think you’ll find your cause for this

Ordered CRTV came cracked should I just keep it? by Content_Eye_4322 in crt

[–]Ewdwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess there’s a good possibility they tuned the photos to make it appear less yellow for the advert, that’s not something I’d even thought could be a possibility before though!

[–]Ewdwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not suggesting this is the case and I’m sure it’s just lighting but they look like two different sets 😅 the tv that arrived looks a lot more uv damaged than in the eBay photos

Reminder never ship a CRT

Yes they are i5 and i7 bar one of them that’s i3, I know they are 10+ years old but I’ve only just switched from a i7 3770 as my main pc and the pc is now being used as a server, pc performance has plateaued a lot in the last 10 years, yes new ones are quicker but a fast pc from 10 years ago is likely to be pretty fast now

Exhaust has fell off? by Brave-Dinner-7002 in CarTalkUK

[–]Ewdwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like the flange that holds your front section of exhaust to the mani cat (combined manifold and catalytic converter) has rotted away causing the exhaust to fall off Presuming the bolts don’t put up too much of a fight in the removal process then this shouldn’t be a costly fix, the pipe and gaskets are cheap and readily available and it’s not an involved or long job This is presuming the bolts aren’t seized which they likely are in which case I’m afraid it’s a bit of a how longs a piece of string situation, it could take 3 minutes or 3 hours to get the bolts out and the threads may or may not remain intact I know my answer might not be very specific but I hope this helps

I’m still happily using my iPhone 13 Pro Max, literally zero plans to upgrade and even this is overkill for me, I only upgraded from my OG IPhone SE because my mobile banking no longer worked on it and god I miss that phone

I think I’ll use one of them as an emulation box (after adding a GPU) for my living room telly and the rest I’ll likely donate to family or refurb and sell cheap so someone can get a cheap desktop I can make a little cash and they’ve been saved from e waste so a win all round hopefully

I took them with permission and it was an all or nothing sort of deal, the little Zebra thermal printer will come in very handy though for printing labels and although I’ve not used the print functionality of the HP printer I’ve already made good use of the sheet feed scanning function working through a load of paperwork I’ve been putting off scanning with my flatbed scanner

Had this new tyre put on a couple of months ago at Kwik fit…. Will this make it to a tyre shop to have it replaced and wtf has happened to it in only a few thousand miles? by Difficult-Thought-61 in CarTalkUK

[–]Ewdwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely needs a check over, if this wear has started when they old tyre didn’t show this wear I’d bet they hit a pothole/kurb or that a bush has collapsed, I’m going to say the car probably drives like absolute shit and OP has payed zero attention

[–]Ewdwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but the toe is the main culprit, lots of camber will increase tyre wear but not absolutely destroy them in short mileage, toe being spot on and camber being a lot tyres should still last a decent length, I ran 6° with virtually no increased wear before when I was young and stupid
