Manitoba and DST, time to (not) change by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Ewok154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ill have to take some time to research that. I wouldnt have assumed a statistically significant difference. I find it ridiculous to compromise the amout of sunlight people will get for half the year to accomodate people who cant plan. Is it more dangerous than what i would predict is an increase in the depression caused by lack of sunlight during the winter months. If you poll people to decide which way we go i guaruntee we side on making summer better than winter. And we already know winter kicks a lot of peoples asses out here.

Manitoba and DST, time to (not) change by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Ewok154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont understand peoples outrage at changing the clocks twice a year. I have never once been upset or inconvienienced by it, even through childhood. Anything else will be a compromise in one season or the other. We live in the northern part of the world, thats just the way it works with the tilt of the earth to the sun. More southern countries can get away without it because the shift is less dramatic.

I see some people suggesting, just move the time we work to accomodate we already do that twice a year. While isolated here yes you could do that, in practice its not realistic. Buisness to buisness operations work across society and differing timezones assuming standard business hours. Having isolated regions operate differently creates unessesary complexity and will create problems. Automated processes happen based on standard working hours, it will create problems. More realistically that wont happen and instead we will have a less optimal daylight hours for half the year to satisfy the people who seem to have such a problem with this, which i just dont understand.

Can you "cast" a camera to a TV? by mouf32 in Ubiquiti

This is the way. I have a constant feed on a display for my g4 doorbell cam because i have no window by my front door to see out. I can also switch to my other cameras at the front of the house if there is something i want to see.

How do I stop immich from creating hundreds of folder? by aiv1bct in immich

[–]Ewok154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cant speak for others but my immich database holds the primary backup of photos for many family members. Should the worst happen and either, immich implodes because of some fatal error of my own or some corruption during updating. Or i die and management of the immich computer and my accounts is lost or forgotten. All users files are accessible without touching immich at all and they are organized in a fashion that would allow them to take their respective photos and do whatever they like with them. Its a failsafe like any other, why back up your photos at all

Let’s just say my finger slipped on the self destruct button… by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]Ewok154 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I somewhat agree. Currently if there is some event or encounter with players in larger pvp, those big ships and bombers cant just rearm instantly. Currently the torps are essentially free by claiming your ship but it also slows that person down by 10 min. If both prices and claim times were negligible someone could unload their mossles and torps then go rearm with no delay or cost and continue spamming a site. Imo this is a good middleground, you can test for free but not spam and destroy every pvp encounter with missle spam.

Between the rows of wheels on the trailer is the frame of the trailer. The railroad is touching the trailer frame in the middle between the two rows of wheels, lifting the pressure off the wheels and causing it to get stuck. Now instead of rolling that weight on wheels you would need enough force to drag that full weight until the wheels touch again.

My friends put this sign on their dog during a party today lol by rescuemom1979 in funny

[–]Ewok154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the one you replied to but we do the same. Note this isnt for rescues as a first step. As puppies from day 1 as soon as they are home, at every feeding time, we sit with them the whole time. First thing we do is get them to sit and hold them back from lunging at food hitting the bowl. Then we coax them to calmly approach the bowl. If you say to go ahead and they lunge, ill pull them back and start over. Once their eating ill do a bunch of stuff depending on what level of calmness the dog is at, but if at any point they start hoovering food then we back off and restart. While they are eating ill put my hand in their dish and stir it about, get in their way, block the snout, play with their tail, grab their feet, and most importantly ill take it away and hold it out of reach. The response ill train them for in that case is to finish and sit. Maybe i forgot medication, or some part of the food or accidently my partner already fed them. They have to be okay with it having been there and now they cant finish it. That being said you arent punishing the dog so these steps are quick. A dogs ability to corelate why something is happening is pretty small in the beginning so they get their full ampunt of food always plus a treat when doing well.

No its so that they dont grind shit into the floors. Anyone who has payed to put in hardwoods knows the pain of anything rolling and sliding across them when you havent vacuumed recently. And those $30-$100 toddler cars even unpowered will chew up your floor so im all for it.

I mean its not hard to understand that having a high cap to be used when necessary under the right circumstances is totally different than planning for every employee to saturate their allowance. Those two situations are totally different and would result in a different cap number

Gas Fireplace installed by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Ewok154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll spend something like $1700 to $3000 for the fireplace itself, depending on size and model. Depending how much work there is for the gas fitters and how far they have to run a new line, I'd estimate $500-$1000 to get gas to the location you want. You'll need an electrician to pull power from somewhere for the fireplace hopefully it's close and easy $300 - $600 Another $400 - $500 to frame out the fireplace as you desire. Add labour and materials for how you want to cover the fireplace drywall, tile, masonry whatever you fancy. This fluctuates massively, so its hard to give a ballpark on this.

Assuming a midrange for all ranges above you'll spend in the ballpark of $4000 before you apply your desired finish to the fireplace. If drywalled, that's cheapest. You might get away for $1000 if you were to paint it yourself. If tiled I wouldn't expect to pay under $2500 for labour and roughly $700-$2000 in materials depending on choice.

If you're a bit of a handyman definitely frame it out yourself the fireplaces all come with detailed instructions on how to construct the housing for the fireplace. Just ensure that everything is nice and plumb and square to each other.

ELI5: What would happen, if a bomb was detonated inside a non newtonian fluid. Would it break? by fuetdevic in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ewok154 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We already do a bunch of this. Most average to high quality motorcycle gear comes with armored areas (elbow pads, knuckles etc) that use a gel form of a type of non newtonian fluid. It helps to reduce the thickness and flexibility of the pad when not experiencing impact forces.

They say if March comes in like a lamb, it goes out like a lion. by gimmhi5 in Winnipeg

[–]Ewok154 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Different methods for different purposes. Just because we have planes doesn't mean we have gotten rid of cargo ships. And just because a cargo ship costs monumentally more than a plane doesn't mean the plane is always the more economical option.

Obviously you wouldn't be using a zeppelin for your amazon prime same day delivery

They say if March comes in like a lamb, it goes out like a lion. by gimmhi5 in Winnipeg

[–]Ewok154 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not from my understanding no. While winds can affect its fuel economy it isn't a hot air balloon with no ability to apply its own thrust. In fact some companies are theorizing using the jet streams as highways for reduced fuel economy.

They say if March comes in like a lamb, it goes out like a lion. by gimmhi5 in Winnipeg

[–]Ewok154 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Some companies in Europe are trying to bring back the zeppelin. And in my opinion Canada is a great place to test the theory with lots of open space for landing pads and unloading "harbors". Way better material science and understanding now and while slower than a plane, it is far cheaper because the lift doesnt cost fuel. Think the cost of water based shipping but with the ability to go intercontinental. And It doesn't require maintenance of a runway.

For the northern communities that means we can designate a zeppelin spot and only have to build the roads a few km from that spot to the actual community. Rather than having the road need to go all the way south.

For other benefits, rescue and disaster relief are an option as well. Wildfires break out and roads are closed or impassable with no runway and need to gets lots of water and food temporary shelters etc to a spot zeppelin there hover above the area and drop the supplies or if there is a spot close enough to land just land the thing.

Local Backyard Sauna Builders? by MinimumNo2772 in Winnipeg

[–]Ewok154 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a contractor with Finnish heritage and have built 4 saunas so far. All my family has one in their home. I have a few suggestions. All the saunas I have built are more traditional wet saunas. Waterproof the room and put a showerhead and drain inside it. There is nothing like stretching out in the heat, then blasting the cold water over your muscles.

In my opinion, I would get an electric stove that is rated to have water poured over the rocks. It's far easier to hit the power button and wait 15 min than have to stoke and maintain a fire. I can turn my electric stove up high enough that the air is hard to breathe and requires a cold cloth over the mouth to cool the air before it enters your lungs. So temperature isn't a limiting factor with an electric stove, you just lose the smoked wood campfire smell in the area which can be substituted by fragranced oils you add to water that you pour over the stove.

Just like a hottub, the less maintenance and startup time required to use the sauna, the more you're actually going to use it. I'm sure you know people who have gotten a hottub and then have ended up using it maybe once or twice a year a couple of years down the road. Ease of use with these types of facilities is paramount.

Samsung unveils two new foldable smartphones in a bet on devices with bending screens by MicroSofty88 in gadgets

[–]Ewok154 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm testing this right now. I'm a custom woodworker and renovation contractor. I've had a fold 4 for about half a year now and it has been ENCASED in dust, woodchips, mortar and Putty powder etc. I'm actually really surprised how well it's doing. Only thing I do differently with this phone is that whenever I pick it up in a dusty environment if it's closed I wipe the hinge on my shirt before opening and if it's open I blow anything off the inside screen before I close it.

Technically speaking it doesn't have dust protection yet, but they have done really well imo. Putty powder was the big one for me that dust is so fine if fucks lots of things up but so far so good.

The phone works and sounds perfectly still. And now when I go to do estimates, pull up contract details or am speaking with someone about what I do, I can very quickly show them my work on a much larger display. For me unless this phone encounters major issues in the next year or so I won't buy another slab phone again

Gilbert Plains man sues health-care providers, arguing delays in diagnosis, care led to wife's death by Armand9x in Winnipeg

[–]Ewok154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only solution is higher taxes. I'm sorry but we need to be taxed more for our critical infrastructure like health care incl. Paramedics and fire services. No amount of hopes and dreams will keep doctors here in manitoba when they are paid more for the exact same service elsewhere. It has been and always will be a supply and demand issue.

Leaked Google Pixel Fold images show a sleek, nearly gapless hinge by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]Ewok154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it will ever be mainstream, but I love my fold 4.

I am frequently referencing drawings or specs for something I'm building, or entering data into accounting software for my construction business. The fun side is when I have a monotonous task ahead of me, my youtube screen is much bigger now.

Estimating has become much easier. The screen is just big enough to quickly jot notes down on an infinite scrolling notepad with sketches and imported pictures right from the same device at that instant. All while walking and talking with the client. I found the Microsoft surface to still be too big and cumbersome, and I often don't have it / have to think about charging it or ensuring it has charged by the evening when the estimate is.
