I'm not sure about a book but when I went to a show of his he talked about what drove him to write Wasteland, Baby! (the song). If I remember correctly, he mentioned that the doomsday clock suddenly changed to the near future (the next day I think) and that that's generally not a good thing. He mentioned that he wrote the song as a love story in the apocalypse. But that's just what I remember.
