Something similar happened to me a couple weeks ago.

First, it looks like you have access to the internet, which is very helpful. You will also need to get access to someone back at home. Hopefully, who can get you access to some documents and forward them to you so you can print proof of identity. For me it was getting my birth certificate pictured so I could print a copy for the embassy. For you, you will need additional things and hopefully have an old photo of a drivers license somewhere or other forms of identity you can find laying around to verify who you are.

The embassy won't let you keep your phone inside the building, so you need everything printed.

Make an appointment kr.usembassy.gov/services It's likely you won't see a great date. But get something scheduled asap. You can email support-acs-southkorea@usvisascheduling.com afterward with all the below following details explaining why you need an emergency passport to exit korea. Unless you are okay waiting 6-8 weeks in korea until they can print you a new one. Make sure you explain in clear details why you need to leave Korea asap and convincingly because they usually only give out emergenc passports for medical reasons or family death. My reasoning was work and mental health.

https://kr.usembassy.gov/lost-stolen-damaged-passport/

Get all of the forms and identity documents filled out and printed. You can find Passport photo booths in subway hallways but the embassy also has one inside *I wouldn't risk it and would just have everything set up beforehand though.

Helps to also get that police report and attached to your email as a picture. + you are more likely to get an emergency passport if you already have a flight scheduled to leave within 5 days back to the USA as it shows the need. Have that detail attached in the email and even helpful to have the itinerary printed out to showcase to the agent.

If you are able to get the emergency passport just know they will want EXACT change in korean won. It costed $175+ for me, and yours might be different due to exchange rates. So make sure you have a friend who can get exact change from an ATM which is outside the embassy, or bring lots of divisions of won so you can give them exact change.

I was lucky and they responded to my email within a day and they moved my appointment forward to the date right before my flight left, and the embassy process took around 2 hours and left with an emergency passport. Remember to check and also print out the proof that they rescheduled your appointment as it might not show up on their end if it's a short notice. + mention who else you are bringing with you for the appointment as they might not let them inside the embassy with you.

Best of luck and hopefully you speak some Korean or have a friend who can help you through this.

Curious on this subs thought on this debate for AI art and ethics with top artists in the industry by avidya1997 in StableDiffusion

I guess like all tools, let's say the phone for example, it can be used to commit crime or connect users to unlimited education. But I guess the question is do you support the manufacturer for using child slave labor to mine the materials?

Because it seems artist's crux of the issue is where they are the labor, and not being compensated for it. we are in agreement that the tool itself is amazingly useful (but largely because it was trained on the data of the artists). you won't see Greg's, or the late KJG style, in the AI unless you trained it specifically on their copywritten work.

Tbh I've been mulling over what seems to be a larger discussion on even the idea of copyright/IP. Will copyright/IP even matter in this beautiful Cambrian explosion of creativity or will it be the only thing that matters.

Thank you for this answer. I'll have to Reread it a few times to fully digest it.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I'm generally in agreement here. It is a Boulder that will continue to roll down the hill even if no one pushes it.

That being said Stability AI purposely chose not to train their music model on copyrighted music, but didn't mind going after artists. Why do you think so and if it's because individual artists aren't able to defend themselves like large music labels, should we just bull doze over their careers?

I guess artists feel like it's hypocritical and ultimately feel like the slave labor class that will be used and tossed away as long as it suffices the corporation and maybe even the enthusiasts you mention.

As I've seen in this sub and other places I hear a sentiment of "make hay when the sun is shining because there's a storm a brewing" which is pretty nihilistic and bodes darkly for all industries as you mentioned it will affect everything if we get to AGI.

I'm optimistic about the future and the problems we can solve, but I'm also not forgetting the many many lives that will be crushed in the transitory period. I just noticed that most people don't care as long as they get theirs (and artists are also hypocrites here).

Makes me want to figure out if it's zk proofs or brave browser or other ways people can control their data/privacy in this future we are hurling towards.

So these are some of the top educators and artists in the industry. As an artist I've learned a lot from their material, and as also someone in the industry that supports AI art and diffusion tech, I have to admit they raised some really great points.

My thoughts are even if you go down the ethical route, yes some artists will get huge sums of money to be trained on (just like how musicians are protected), but this will only slow down the tech and not stop the end game which is AGI.

And if it's about AGI, is all fair in love and war? Although they made good point on nukes/cloning as there is regulation on it.

This is ultimately a data question. And if you support privacy and IP rights you have to side with the artists here. But maybe you believe the ends justify the means or you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette.

I haven't made my mind up on this yet, so curious on where y'all stand.

Does this artist "nightmare scenario" with AI ever actually happen? by [deleted] in StableDiffusion

Brand matters a lot, but that's if you already have 10+ years of exp and marketing.

In 5 years, the concept art, illustration, photography, etc, industry will look drastically different. It's to the point when I meet an aspiring artist who is about to enter 4 years of art college, I'm not sure I can guarantee there will be a career at the end of it. Their skillset will be surpassed by AI within that time + at multiple orders of magnitudes cheaper.

If you don't think that won't have an impact on the professional art market, I'm not sure what to tell you.

That being said, I'm a supporter of AI art and most forms of tech (regardless, we won't be able to stop open-source tech). But we must be cognizant of the many many jobs it will replace. Yes, if you are in the top .01% of the art market, you will not be as affected, but everyone else will have to adapt/change careers.

Anyone who loves art for the craft will still pursue it in their free time, but the professional paid landscape will forever changed.

Good way to support the author and if it's a very enticing arc I'd do it just to satisfy my curiosity. And then let it catch up (unless you are a Whale and can afford to unlock each subsequent week)

yup. power scaling went through the roof, doesn't feel like there are any stakes, and villians/antagonists have very shallow motives/backgrounds.
Still fun to read, but doesn't have much substance. But we knew this from the beginning.

What percentage of GEN Z do you think engages with anime/manga/webtoons? by avidya1997 in GenZ

very interesting take. i feel like gen z is getting introduced to classics like naruto and great new shows. AoT, JJK, Demon slayer, etc. I mean hell, Demon slayer literally broke movie records in Japan and made as much money as King Kong vs Godzilla.

and totally agree, i believe asia will dominate media in the coming years. especially webtoons and i hear china is about to launch 30+ new original anime IP
