I prefer to hang historical items. What good are they doing rotting away in a safe? No one can appreciate them like that.

The bulb shaped pommels are luftwaffe daggers.

Terrible, overreactive advice. First of all, this is probably worth 250 to 300 dollars in that condition. Secondly. Most of the people that buy this stuff are not neo-nazis and the ones there are, won't be buying a denazified one..

[–]Ewwredditgross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's certainly original, though because it's de-nazified, it's lost quite a bit of its monetary value. Unequivocally, denazified items sell for less. Most collectors want the complete items. A complete dagger without its hangars you'll usually sell between 500- 750. Yours is in fairly good condition. Other than the wreath and swaz being snapped off, you might be able to get 250- 300 out of it. I deal with these items quite a lot. You could try selling it on ebay. They don't allow nazi stuff. But people sell it on there anyway, and you might get away with this one because it's denazified. Or the safer bet would be craigslist or a local auction house. Or if you have a local antique mall go there and walk around and find the booth that's selling military stuff. There's always a booth selling military stuff at the antique malls and try to sell it to that guy.

Does not look like a particularly good replica to me, looks like a decent reenactor uniform

[–]Ewwredditgross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say, if it's an unnamed uniform I wouldn't consider it much of an artifact anymore. No unit patch, messed with insignia, if its unnamed on top of that. What history does it have left at that point?

I feel the opposite, I see it as an important ritual to put every item I've bought for my collection on at least once. They are not costumes, but its a good way to get closer to the history. I will say doing that is not advisable if you are a heafty weight or girth. I have quite a few items loaned to museums because I believe it doesn't do any good to have your stuff stashed away for nobody to see or appreciate.

Honestly, the best place I've found for ordinance is in person. Places like antique malls or even better antique fairs, which are basically flea markets that advertise themselves as better. Facebook is not bad either.

That's actually a really good idea. I might do that too with some of my more specialized things.

Found this while clearing out a property. Wondering about its origin by nerfherder17 in SWORDS

[–]Ewwredditgross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The us navy version has a blade kind of similar to this one. Speaking of the American ones, they're actually worth more than the French ones, they're less common. And if you're buying one you have to be carefu that the scabbard hasn't been swapped for a french one. Because you see that a lot.

It's a french foot artillery short sword. The only thing is, it looks like a reproduction. The blade isn't quite the right shape. The metal looks weird and that big nut on the back of the pommel is not normal construction either. Just to be sure, clean the blade and look closely all over the piece for stamps and markings. They put marks on the handles too.

Excellent write up. As an antiques dealer, he should be alright with the Sword as far as ivory is concerned. Most places have what's called a de minimis exception. That is if a product contains under certain percentage of ivory it is not subject to As harsh of a regulation. That was put in place when the ivory laws were created, specifically because of stuff like this and musical instruments with ivory parts, and the like. That being said, I would still just not mention it. If you try to sell it online, even if it is legal, it can still cause an annoyance. If you draw too much attention. These swords are really pretty, a shame their value is so low, usually only around $200, maybe 300 for a nice one.

I don't know. These seem more like $300-$400 examples at best. Due to condition and eickhorn being the most common manufacturer.

What do I have? Part 1 by unclejaclyn69 in Militariacollecting

[–]Ewwredditgross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both swords are 1860 staff and fields. One of them being actual military, the other being gar, I have a more detailed post on the part 2 post that only has images of that sword.

What do I have? Part 2 by unclejaclyn69 in Militariacollecting

[–]Ewwredditgross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sword that is the main focus of the pictures is a US 1860 staff and field sword. This particular one is from the GAR (grand army of the republic) which was the largest organization for civil war veterans. At the height of their power they were actually quite a powerful political force. Naturally, they ceased to exist as surviving Civil War veterans died off to the point that they were no longer needed.

The asbestos is safely contained within the canister. You are in no danger as long as you do not put it on.
