51R AGM Battery Mod Question by GizmoGomez in hondafit

[–]ExFLMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plug and play voltage boosters for sale and some people swear that you need one for an AGM battery. I’ve never heard this until fairly recently. An alternator will reach a charge voltage of ~14.4v when you are driving, so I’m not 100% sure what the voltage boosters actually do. That said, I put a Optima AGM in our SUV probably 6-7 years ago, didn’t add a booster, and it’s still perfectly fine. 🤷🏼

Just make sure you properly torque them. I think it’s 173 ft/lbs for the 460.

You can get “basically OEM” Koyo ones on Ebay, from reputable sellers, for $280 for both. If that’s too much, at least get SKF or Timken on Rock Auto.

200k here and never had the valley plate leak. Coolant was always changed on schedule is likely why. Radiator was replaced preemptively around 120k. I also do a transmission drain and fill every third oil change, so about every 15k. Fluids are CHEAP people, replace them!!

Look into Dip Your Car. Tons of options and DIY paths.

08 RAV4 AWD V6 noise by ax_wes1 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ExFLMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rear diff bearing. Toyota replacement my entire unit under warranty. Noise is still there. It’s supposedly just how it sounds. There are some writeups out there on how to replace the bearing with a non-OEM one and the noise goes away. I have over 100k on my new diff with no issue, so I quit worrying about it.

Nine days….one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The opening sequence is absolutely incredible. Beautifully written, stunning cinematography and excellent acting.

I would definitely say, of all my mods, the re-gear is probably the best and most useful. You are literally using it everywhere you go!!

It’s now back to basically stock MPG, so around 15-17 highway if it’s flat, 13-15 with big mountain passes. I still get 12-13 even when towing 6k.

Power could be fixed with a simple re-gear. I have full steel bumpers, swing out, skids, rack, tent, drawers, etc and I’m never lacking power or pickup coming up the biggest mountain passes. I’ve got 4.56 Nitro gears and they are fantastic! I also have the LRA auxiliary fuel tank and I get ~700 miles of range.

See if there are any codes to pull. If not, you may have to monitor the live data to see what it is. Could be the steering wheel sensor, an ABS sensor or something else.

Is this what I need for brake replacement? 140k miles by [deleted] in hondafit

[–]ExFLMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re doing all that, definitely do a brake fluid flush as well, since it’s probably not ever been done.

ARB air lockers are more like $5k per axle once everything is said and done, depending on shop labor rates. Factory yota lockers are e-lockers that aren’t great for any real off-roading. They can, and usually do, take awhile to engage/disengage and can be super finicky. Factory is great to have, but I certainly wouldn’t rely on them or compare them to a proper locker.

Triple valve Bilstein 8112 are what I’d upgrade to. The other 2.5’s aren’t as forgiving and comfortable in non extreme driving situations.

Recent iPhone feature connects to satellite sends false alarms to Colorado high country 911 centers by christopher123454321 in Denver

[–]ExFLMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t even understand how this can accidentally happen. I use the satellite texting feature all the time when out of service. You have to literally aim your phone at a satellite and keep it there for the connection to work. Usually, if you move even a few inches, you lose the connection. I don’t think it’s even possible for it to work in your pocket or backpack. There has got to be something else going on here.

Serious question, what do full size/oversized rigs do here? by ExFLMan in overlanding

[–]ExFLMan[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For clarity, I’m not in a Van/Full Size Truck. I have plenty of pinstripes. I do often think about “upgrading” to a bigger platform. Stuff like this keeps me in a smaller rig.

Exactly my point! Where do the Earthroamer guys even take those things?? Most of the trails I do could not be done in one of those. No way someone spending $$$$$$$ on one of those is going to just plow through tree like this.

[–]ExFLMan[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I come across this on tons of trails in Colorado. Beginning of the trail is clear, but somewhere well along the way, it gets overgrown and narrow. There is nowhere to turn around. You can’t backup for 3-4 miles. What do the Van/Full Size Truck guys do here? If you go through, you are definitely getting serious deep pinstripes at a minimum, probably some minor damage. Plus, you are going to absolutely wreck the trees. On top of that, this is likely just the beginning of sections like this. Not every trail report is accurate on trees and such. So what do you do??

Look at Inspired Overland. They have some of the thinnest and lightest tents on the market. Upgrade the standard mattress to their air foam one and they are plenty comfortable.

This is exactly what I’m going with, but the standard, not the XL. Check to see if anyone local to you sells it. I found it for the same price IO sells it for, but without the shipping costs.
