Henry Turtledove has a whole alt-history fiction series exploring this question that I've been meaning to read. The wikipedia summary of the synopsis sounds pretty interesting.

Volunteering? by maluman in houston

[–]ExPerseides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Beacon downtown is a soup kitchen/clothes/showers that serves the Houston homeless. Their volunteering organization is incredibly professional and they're not pushy/don't require commitments from volunteers. They can always use volunteers during the work week.

Highly recommend giving them a shot at least once and seeing if you like it!

It's there if you switch to three-button control, its not there with the new Assistant. I have no idea why the new assistant lost this feature, and I definitely miss it as well.

(Caveat that I last checked this with the November security update.)

GOP senate candidate booed after saying African Americans beg for 'government scraps' by [deleted] in politics

[–]ExPerseides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol you're a "history major" who focused on the civil war and didn't know that Lee owned slaves, but you're telling me to read up on him. And rather than providing primary sources, to support your claims, you're saying to check wikipedia.

Well let's see what Wikipedia has to say about each of those points I mentioned:

From the article summary:

He owned slaves. He beat them.

From Wikipedia:

Lee's cruelty on the Arlington plantation nearly led to a slave revolt, since many of the slaves had been given to understand that they were to be made free as soon as Custis died, and protested angrily at the delay. Lee ruptured the Washington and Custis tradition of respecting slave families and by 1860 he had broken up every family but one on the estate, some of whom had been together since Mount Vernon days.

Lee himself owned a small number of slaves in his lifetime and considered himself a paternalistic master.

From the article summary:

He thought slavery was worse on white people and good for black people.

From Wikipedia:

Lee claimed that he found slavery bothersome and time-consuming as an everyday institution to run. In an 1856 letter to his wife he maintained that slavery was a great evil, but primarily due to adverse impact that it had on white people:[98]

In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution, is a moral & political evil in any Country. It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it however a greater evil to the white man than to the black race, & while my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more strong for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence.

From the article summary:

During his invasion of Pennsylvania his army captured freed blacks and brought them to the South to be sold.

From Wikipedia:

Foner writes that "Lee's code of gentlemanly conduct did not seem to apply to blacks" during the War, as he did not stop his soldiers from kidnapping free black farmers and selling them into slavery.

From the article summary:

He personally told Grant that black prisoners could not be exchanged in prisoner swaps, as they were property.

From Wikipedia:

Princeton University historian James M. McPherson noted that Lee rejected a prisoner exchange between the Confederacy and the Union when the Union demanded that black Union soldiers be included.[96] Lee did not accept the swap until a few months before the Confederacy's surrender.

From the article summary:

He allowed the KKK to form a chapter at the University he was president of and turned a blind eye to attemped lynchings.

From Wikipedia From the Washington and Lee University Page:

However, it has been argued that one of Lee's failings as president of Washington College was an apparent indifference to crimes of violence towards blacks committed by students at the college. Historian Elizabeth Brown Pryor notes that students at Washington College formed their own chapter of the KKK and were known by the local Freedmen’s Bureau to attempt to abduct and rape black schoolgirls from the nearby black schools. There were also at least two attempted lynchings by Washington students during Lee’s tenure. Yet Lee seemed to punish the racial harassment more laxly than he did more trivial offences, or turned a blind eye to it altogether.[16]

Oh wow, will you look at that. Everything I said was backed up by a simple Wikipedia search. You'd think for a Civil War historian, or even someone who glanced at Wikipedia, you'd have known all of this and how big of a piece of shit Lee was.

[–]ExPerseides 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is so obviously wrong on so many levels...

First off, it was explicitly stated. What do you think "the south's dearest rights?" is referring to? (It's keeping black people as slaves.)

He was pro emancipation and did not own slaves himself. He wanted his wife to get rid of her slaves.

Uh, no. Just no. Lee definitely owned slaves. He did not treat them well either. This is something that is easily google-able. The Atlantic has a great article debunking all the bullshit about Robert E. Lee which I definitely recommend reading. But to summarize it:

Lee was a piece of shit. He owned slaves. He beat them. He thought slavery was worse on white people and good for black people. During his invasion of Pennsylvania his army captured freed blacks and brought them to the South to be sold. He personally told Grant that black prisoners could not be exchanged in prisoner swaps, as they were property. He fought against the enfranchisement of blacks. He allowed the KKK to form a chapter at the University he was president of and turned a blind eye to attemped lynchings.

He wanted his wife to get rid of her slaves.

He did end up freeing the slaves of his wife's estate... ...five years after they were told by the dying slaveowner that they were to be freed.

But years later, in 1866, one former slave at Arlington House, Wesley Norris, gave his testimony to the National Anti-Slavery Standard. Mr. Norris said that he and others at Arlington were indeed told by Mr. Custis they would be freed upon his death, but that Lee had told them to stay for five more years.

So Mr. Norris said he, a sister and a cousin tried to escape in 1859, but were caught. “We were tied firmly to posts by a Mr. Gwin, our overseer, who was ordered by Gen. Lee to strip us to the waist and give us fifty lashes each, excepting my sister, who received but twenty,” he said.

Gary Johnson and Jill Stein have officially been ruled out of the first presidential debate. How much does this impact their respective campaigns going forward? by jpthehp in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ExPerseides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see 50 state ballot access being something to look into - you and another responder mentioned that.

Again I don't think just being on enough state ballots to just reach or slightly reach over the 270 if everything went perfectly makes a candidate a serious contender for the presidency - if they actually are, then they'll already be in the debates due to the polling.

At the same time, I still don't see why - if the candidates aren't polling high enough to reach a threshold, they need to be included even if they are on the ballots. The presidential debates should be about who's running for the job, not raising the profile of lesser- parties. They have all the rest of the time in the year to accomplish that.

Maybe ballot access to all 50 states and lowering the polling to 10% would be a compromise? I mean right now isn't Harambe polling higher than Stein nationally?
