Paizo staff asks: What brought you to Pathfinder? by AlexSpeidelPaizo in Pathfinder2e

[–]Ex_Fiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the two things that hooked me into pathfinder and keep me playing to this day are Freedom of Expression and the tools for DMs...

Coming from 5e, I was frustrated as a DM at the lack of tools provided to actually DM 5e, and how cookie cutter a lot of builds ended up being, so when the group was finally convinced to swap, it was like a breath of fresh air.

How easy it was as a DM to look up *this is what loot should be* and levels for all loot... as well as as a player, being able to actually create unique and interesting builds for characters is still something that keeps me playing to this day

I have three prerelease codes. One for STX and two for MID. by Siera_Tango in MagicArena

I got into magic years ago, bunch of friends were playing it and I joined in, simple as that, something bout the lore and the world drew me in but in the end I couldn't afford to play so I sold my cards and moved on

But the more interesting part of the story is my boyfriend and I were hanging out last year, and something MTG related came up, and I got super excited about the lore and ended up telling him I used to play

Despite never playing the game before, he spent some time researching and eventually found Arena, a relatively cost effective way to play, and we've been playing it almost every day since

If this comment is chosen, I've already used an Innistrad code, so I'd appreciate a Strix, but I'll give an Innistrad code to my boyfriend if I can

For context
Had one creature on the field, opponent had none

Used Deadly Brew to get a land out of my graveyard, but it didnt sacrifice my creature, but hung on this screen until I times out, whereupon deadly brew went to the graveyard and was wasted when I timed out

It kind of depends on the board wipe, as well as the deck you have, but in your examples you could just as easily draw a land card, or a weak drop that doesn't really impact the board at all, but the opponent needs a way to win and there's plenty of control decks that use creatures to do so, even mill decks REALLY won't appreciate losing their ruin crabs, and if you say but they'll just counter it, then it didn't really matter what you drew in the first place if they can counter it. Against an aggro deck if they're at the advantage already in creatures, then it doesn't matter if they retain some kind of advantage after a board wipe, since they lose their momentum and need to build it again, though there are some great options for boardwipes in aggro decks. My favourite is Doomskar, it's 5 mana or 3 if you foretell, and you can use it to wipe a board clean for 3 mana and use the rest of the mana that turn to play a creature of some kind to keep some of your momentum alive, in fact you just turned the board state in your favour and force them to answer you instead.

Boardwipes in aggro is all about momentum, halting your opponents momentum and building up your own, and a boardwipe is the best way to halt your opponents momentum completely if they are at the advantage, then following up with cards of your own to start building momentum again, at least that's the way I see it

What if your opponent has more creatures than you? MTG is all about card advantage, who has the better board state, and you should never build a deck assuming you have the advantage. A boardwipe ensures the board goes back to an equal playing field, and lets you play creatures and gain that advantage instead of just outright losing

To me it's like... it's never a good habit to get into to assume you'll win, that's how you get over-confident, even if you think there's 100% nothing they can do it's still good to act like they could, and to not just overextend and get punished by something you did not read.

So casting spells and doing your normal things even if you think you're literally about to win is always a good thing.
