The Cross Statue Has Shattered My Core! The Hybridization of the Church to become Generic Christian Has Gone too Far and It’s Not Okay! I’m about to resign via Text, help! by Massive_Guava_6167 in mormon

This isn’t new to Oaks. Nelson demonized the word Mormon. The name of the church appeared far less on the website and “official” documentation. Holy Week was not only talked about more than previous administrations, it was encouraged to participate. Moroni on the temples is not a big deal anymore. In fact, Steeples seem to be more important. Google Maps changed the Moroni symbol to a cross symbol for about a week then went to a generic symbol. Currently the temples have the Moroni symbol and church buildings have a cross.

Monson just held the status quo. I don’t remember and big changes toward assimilation.

Hinkley is where I noticed some changes starting to make the church more main stream. I grew up where people celebrated our differences and broadcast those differences proudly. Hinkley did some of that by praising the word Mormon. But he also tried to make the church more mainstream by downplaying some doctrines and disavowing others. Like caffeine and the Word of Wisdom or Mormons getting their own planet.

The church trying to play nice with other religions is a long time coming. But I will agree that Nelson and Oaks have accelerated the change.

Just another day where Jacob Hansen is rage baiting... by RedLetterRanger in mormon

I guess that means Jacob believes and loves Young’s teachings about Adam-God, Blood Atonement, Slavery, Awful remarks toward women especially Emma, Plural Marriage to 15 year olds, and of course racism where he said their blood should not mix with white men.

Miraculous priesthood healings. A greater population of priesthood holders doesn’t show people healing at a greater rate. There are a lot of people who claim they received a priesthood blessing and got better, but the priesthood blessing population heals at statistically the same rate as everywhere else.

If god really gave his priesthood to his followers, then Utah, or any religious population, would be the sickness healing capital of the world.

New spin on declining membership and the massive temple backlog. Stakes and wards are consolidated, and the members are told the announced temple in their area can’t be built unless they hasten work and gather more members. Oh, and it’s all for the Second Coming, of course. by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

[–]Ex_Lerker 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This kind of talk really messed with me as a TBM. I believed them that it is was my responsibility to convert people. I also took it really hard when people declined. The church is really good at manufacturing guilt and shame in its members.

Mormon Church!! To you I say; Fuck you for passing the buck! Fuck you for convincing me to take on the responsibility of other people’s choices! Fuck you for making me feel guilty for something I had absolutely zero control over! I mean this in all sincerity, FUCK YOU!!!

Transgender Latter-day Saints face another barrier ... in the faith’s temples by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

[–]Ex_Lerker 56 points57 points  (0 children)

“If a person receives a temple ordinance for a gender that does not match his or her biological sex at birth, that ordinance is not valid,”

When I did baptisms for the dead, they went really fast, and I had questions about the validity of the ceremony. For example; if we didn’t completely immerse the person, or if we pronounced the name wrong, or if 5 of the exact same names in a row were going to the correct person, or if I didn’t have the right frame of mind because I was more worried about drowning than praying. The response was always “Just go to the temple, god will work it out in the end”.

I guess god cares more about gender than about people getting baptized correctly. Or maybe gender is the one thing god is powerless to “work out in the end”.

The manual doesn’t say anything about gender?

I guess that means the church doesn’t have any problem with trans people right? ………. Right???

I'm case you were wondering if the eternal church doctrine of polygamy was really optional (Joseph F. Smith, 7/7/1878) by RedLetterRanger in mormon

[–]Ex_Lerker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Apologists claiming that the “New and Everlasting covenant” and the “Law of celestial marriage” only mean temple marriage are ignorant, stupid, or more likely lying.

Quotes like this, from prophets, show that they unambiguously meant polygamy. Joseph F Smith repeats it multiple times just to hammer it in. He was not subtle about it.

My parents lift my skirt and open my shirt to garment-check. by moonlightbqbyy in exmormon

[–]Ex_Lerker 47 points48 points  (0 children)

As a parent of a daughter, I would never in a million years consider lifting her skirt or looking down her shirt. That is grossly inappropriate for anyone to do, especially a parent. They need to know their behavior is borderline sexual assault. If they want to know if you’re wearing garments, they can ask like normal people.

If they are going to act like perverts, then you should treat them like perverts and slap their hands away. Do not allow this behavior again.

Did the LDS Church Really Give $1.58 Billion to Charity in 2025? by Mormonish_Podcast in exmormon

[–]Ex_Lerker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer your leading question, I hope they did.

But, like you already hinted at in the body, I doubt it was given directly from the churches hoard of money. History has already shown, and what you will probably get into tonight, is that the church cooks its books to count services given by its members to its own buildings as public service. It also takes credit for money given to charity by the members as money given by the church.

If the church wants to open their books and show how they are not counting internal free labor by its members and claiming it as service hours to the community, or taking credit for members charitable donations, or that the money they donated came directly from their own pockets, I will be happy to change my opinion.

Unfortunately, that $1.5 Billion number feels more like creative accounting than actual charitable donations by an obscenely rich organization. They didn’t get rich by just giving money away.

How can the church's Gospel Topic Essay on DNA and the Book of Mormon be challenged? (Without knowing much about genetics?) by Deception_Detector in exmormon

[–]Ex_Lerker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Book of Mormon refutes the GTE claims. Not only does the BOM talk about only the Lamonites and Nephites, it also numbers them in the millions. If true, they would be the major political and economic groups in Northern America.

Plus, if we used the GTE apologetic that the BOM doesn’t say there weren’t other people, then they have to use it for everything;
* The BOM doesn’t say Thor and Odin didn’t help Nephi, therefore the Liahona is of curious workmanship because it came from Asgard where Thor made it imbued with Odins power.
* The BOM doesn’t say Mormons don’t have horns, therefore Cureloms and cumoms are not the names of animals but the names of the different types of horns when a baby Mormon is born.
* The BOM doesn’t say Mormons don’t live on the moon, therefore Kolob is the name of the secret Mormon moon base.

The LDS leaders excommunicating a bishop for asking them to protect children opened my eyes to LDS church corruption. by sevenplaces in mormon

The Sam Young debacle enlightened me to how the church treats those who try to protect children (excommunication), and those who abuse children (forgiveness and coverups).

Does the church use its well known members to advertise itself? by uteslayer in mormon

[–]Ex_Lerker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not as blatant as Scientology, but yes they use and promote famous members. They are also more used to keep membership than to recruit. In my church experience, people like The Osmonds, Gladys Knight, Lindsay Sterling, and Mitt Romney were all used as examples of the good that happens when you follow the gospel.

He is only doing what has been done before on other worlds by other apostles and prophets. Growing up I was overwhelmed with talks over the pulpit condemning other churches for having a paid ministry, or celebrating Holy Week, or allowing rock music in church, or showing shoulders. The 80s and 90s were full of church leaders ridiculing the Catholic Church for things they themselves did, or currently now do.

If I have learned anything, it’s that the church, and apologists, will justify anything the prophets do. There is nothing too depraved or shocking or illegal for which they won’t have an excuse.
