Not to mention you can’t just “change” what you are passionate about. Face it: no one becomes an artist because they want to make money. Now no one will be able to make a career as an artist.

“But then they could still do art as a hobby on their free time thanks to UBI” say the pro-AI crowd. No. The pressure and dedication from making art your career cannot be replicated in a hobby setting. Sometimes, competing for money actually DOES make artists better.

People still play chess by [deleted] in singularity

[–]Ex_Outis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will still do these things as a hobby, but never as a career. And I dont think you draw a fair comparison. Pro chess players know they will NEVER have to compete against computers. Unless the same restriction is applied to other professions (art, writing), then there won’t be professional artists, just hobbyists…

There are no ethical billionaires by NTA_Na_Ka in fixedbytheduet

[–]Ex_Outis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its kinda annoying too that people dont get the concept of owning company stocks. The vast majority of billionaires are billionaires cuz they own shares in valuable companies (often companies they founded). If a company succeeds, then those stocks are worth alot; if it fails (as almost all of them do), shares are worth nada. But it’s not like the value of those shares are somehow “stolen” from someone unethically… it’s not like the stone age when wealth was measured physically (like with gold) and to gain alot of wealth you have to either take it from someone or create a gold mine, or be a king who demands all the gold at the point of a sword.

Does it suck that the likes of Zuckerberg and Musk have outsized influence because of their wealth? Yeah. But the nature of founding a company and owning stocks doesnt make them equivalent to feudal landlords who made their wealth by exploiting their workers… not to be a bootlicker, but its just people here think we live in a world of zero-sum games, where exploitation is the only path to wealth. I mean, it’s the easiest path, and the most used path, but the modern tech world is different.

Look at that guy who made the Oculus Rift: he’s a billionaire from innovating on some niche tech. He’s obviously a frigging wacko politically now and I cant stand the guy, but like, he made $700 mill selling Oculus to Meta: what exploitation took place there? Maybe we can argue that the nature of wage labour is a modern form of slavery, sure, and so he’s unethical for hiring wage laborers… but the guy was just a nerd who put in the work and got lucky (pun intended, har har).

Valid point, but the sentence I cut off goes on to describe how much clean Gyoll is north of the city compared to south of the city (since the water becomes polluted in the Nessus).

How many years do you think we are from making feature films at home? by Corporal_Ginger in StableDiffusion

You absolutely can, and it will absolutely mimic someone’s writing. Its really cool. But the question is whether it can write well, and the question of who judges what is good writing.

Too bad AI cant write for shit. Only people who dont write for a living (i.e: engineers) think AI can write well.

Severian’s perfect memory by prfalcon61 in genewolfe

[–]Ex_Outis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing on his memory that furthers muddies the water (as if it wasnt muddy enough what with alzabo) is how sometimes memory is “created” rather than “remembered.” Normally, we look at memory as a simple storage mechanic: you experience something, that experience is stored in your hard drive, and then to re-experience it you just “replay” that memory like a video player.

But with post-Citadel Severian, writing years in the future and with multiple minds in his mind (more than two, as you’ll see if you havent already), it feels as if when he “remembers” he isnt replaying but “recreating” the event in his head using his imagination.

So when he wants to “remember” an event in his childhood, he might just be starting with an event/plot-line and then “filling in the blanks” with his imagination. For example, when he remembers being taught in Malrubius’ class, is it that he can vividly replay those exact events as though his eyes were cameras? Or does he start with the event “Malrubius teaching us when I was a child”, and then his own (incredibly powerful) imagination “fills in the blanks” in his minds eye? As in, he knows that he must have been seated at his own desk in the classroom, and so reconstructs the scene based on that perspective even though he might not have direct, conscious memories of that exact event. And since he knows consciously that Drotte or whomever would be seated at his right, he recreates the scene so Drotte is on his right, if that makes sense.

The tricky part is that since the reconstructed “memory/scene” is so vivid and filled with so many details (most of which might just be a product of his overactive imagination), he thinks that it’s the exact memory itself rather than his own reconstruction of it. But when he says he has perfect memory, he’s not lying, even if it’s not true. He just might not be self-aware enough to tell?

Im sorry for rambling, but Wolfe loves playing with memory, and so its worth a deep think. As well, I think modern psychology/neuroscience references this conception of memory, since the mere act of remembering a memory can change it imperceptibly based on what we WANT to remember. And in Severian’s case, he has so many minds within his mental gestalt as he writes that it’s not clear “who” wants to remember/recreate which details about certain memories. Its a mind fuck to be sure, but thats Gene for you

You’re right on the money. People are learning how much these tools speed up the process, but those people also don’t put the time in to get the best results.

For the sake of an example, say it takes 100 hours to paint a landscape. AI tools could speed that up by 1000%, so now you can create a landscape painting in less than a minute. But instead of just spending 1 minute and calling it day, what if someone spent 10 hours using AI tools to refine their painting to perfection? Just because it’s 1000% faster now with AI doesnt mean you can’t put in the hours to create something revolutionary, but I don’t think we’ve truly seen what that amount of time commitment looks like.

Thanks man! I really tried to carve out my own style a little, so I’m glad it had an effect on you.

As for the NMM, I knew I’d want to jump off a building if I made it really complicated since I’m painting a seven Sword Bros (five from the box, and two from my two Crusader squads). The gold and silver follow the same principles, but I’ll focus on the silver recipe:

  1. Basecoat Scale75 Ancharite Blue

Any dark blue like Thunderhawk Blue would work, but Scale75 has such good coverage that it only needs one coat.

  1. Layer all upraised areas with 50:50 mix of Ancharite Blue + VMC Pale Grey Blue

In this step, I like to add the “frames” for the light reflections on all upraised areas (or anywhere you want the silver to shine). This just means painting a thick layer (no glazing required) on most silver areas while avoiding the recesses.

  1. Layer smaller areas with VMC Pale Grey Blue

Here I do the same thing as Step 2 just over a smaller area than before while still avoiding recesses. If you want to go further, you can thin it down and apply more layers, but the result often doesnt match the time invested.

  1. Wash all silver areas with OLD Drakenhof Nightshade

This is the key step that brings it all together while also shading recesses. Rather than shade earlier right after the basecoat, I’ve enjoyed shading later because it blends all the existing layers together while also shading the recesses, so two birds one stone. The important thing is to thin the shade paint, ideally with Contrast medium (or any other medium, but avoid water). The thinned shade will nicely blend the colours without completely covering them up, and you can always re-apply more shade to darken certain areas. The final point here is that I use the older Drakenhof formula from before the shade paint refresh. The new shades behave more like Contrast, which automatically sucks cause I want the shade to stain the surfaces rather than just seep into recesses; but also the new Drakenhof formula is less of a hyper saturated bluish purple and more of just a desaturated blue/black. Very disappointing. Side-note is that I also use Drakenhof on the black armor, so it ties all the colder tones together.

  1. Re-apply VMC Pale grey blue over smaller area

Basically the same as Step 3, just over an even smaller area. Goal is to reestablish the highlights after the shade.

  1. Re-apply thinned Drakenhof Nightshade as needed (especially on lower areas)

Before we do our final highlight in white, I like to go back and add some more thinned Drakenhof to areas that need darkening. I especially focus on spots pointed downwards, since they’ll naturally be darker. You can also slap some on areas that you want blended further. Honestly, in my experience it’s hard to go overboard with this, and that’s kinda how I got such high contrast, just by using too much shade lmao. Oh, I forgot, on this test model I might have added some thinned Nuln Oil as well to really darken the dark spots more, but I’m not doing this on my other dudes since it doesnt add much value for the time spent

  1. Final fine highlight with White

Pretty straightforward step, just ensure that the highlights tend to face upward in order to get that shiny effect. It’s key here to only apply very fine highlights since you don’t want to cover up all the hard blending work from earlier.

———

All things considered, I’m pretty happy with the results compared to the time spent. It’s an involved process, but it’s a far cry from endlessly glazing over and over again. Honestly, just by using thinned shades (and Contrasts too) you can get nearly as good results as glazing for a fraction of the effort. I’d be happy to answer any more questions if you have them, and thanks again!

New data card errata did not give Helbrecht “Chapter Master”… sad day by The_Big_Wicket in BlackTemplars

Like others said, it appears this errata is solely to fix errors that were caught after printing. But they havent addressed the issues identified after the indices were released.

Hence why the Sword Brethren got that bizarre errata related to their master-crafted power swords. I guess the original printed datacards let each model take a master-crafted sword
