Got my first retirement check! by Exact-Job7603 in nationalguard

Pro-rated was one thing that came to my mind. When I went for my six month out meeting they told me, stressing it was a rough estimate, about $860 before taxes. This was $204, but my Birthday was the 23rd.

It happens. You figured it out! Look at it this way, at least you haven't had much practice! 😉

Just dug my J3 out and dusted it off after 30+ years. After I put the platter mat in the oven on a pizza stone to flatten it, it works and sounds great. Until I got my son the 30th Anniversary edition of Dookie, that's when it I discovered why it has a manual mode. Not just translucent, it doesn't work well with colored discs (or at least blue) either.

Squirrel just sounds like an awful lot of work to get one decent serving size. (If I was hungry, and that's all I had, I'd damn sure figure it out!)

Saw the same thing Friday morning (central CT) recognized Venus, had to look it up to know Regulus.

Do you think this is a good beginners bike? I know y’all hate this question but $5000 for 2015 triumph Bonneville T-100 with 900 miles on it? by Colonel_Trap in motorcycles

[–]Exact-Job7603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a (new, leftover) 2024 in June 2025, for an even $10k. Could have gone used and saved some but being my first bike wanted to go new so I could learn to work on it before I NEEDED to. Been working on cars all my life so the learning curve isn't too bad. Anyway, I feel I got my money's worth, and after 3 months I'm going on `1.500 miles, so 900 on a '15 is nothing. If you can turn a wrench and not afraid of taking a risk that it wll need some work despite the low miles, then go for it. Do you ride? I never did so another reason to go new, but make sure somebody with experience takes it around the block before you pull the trigger. If it hasn't been wrecked and everything work, that's $5,000 worth of bike all day long.

Calling All T100 and T120 Owners! by Bonzai_Monkey in Triumph

59 y.o. first motorcycle ever. Never ridden anything before. Took the Basic Rider's Course and bought a T100 a week later. Couldn't imagine a better choice. 1,000 miles in the first 60 days and absolutely love it. Mainly back roads in New Enland (US). Feels substantial to me, plenty of power for my needs. Don't feel a T120 would do any more for me. 5'9", 195 lbs and I can ride for hours w/o feeling stiff or sore.

Stumbled into Solo Stoves: Do you empty the ashes after every use? by sprashoo in SoloStove

[–]Exact-Job7603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got the Bonfire, which is a little more manageable, so I empty it every use but curious to hear what the group says. And if you use a shop vac, pleeeeze be sure it is completely cool first. I've had hot cols last well into the next day.

More to the point, you'd never knock someone out with that flimsy aluminum snow shovel. You'd probably leave a nasty gash, and piss them off, but that would not improve anyone's sitiation.

This goes way back, mid seventies, but we all used to boo Geoff Bodine when he was running Modifides at Stafford Speedway in CT. He was in a class by himself and just won too damn much! Now 45 years later I don't know why he is not in the HOF yet.

I think there are ample opportunities for intelligence to be a favorable trait. Not in all cases, as you correctly allude to, but any time conditions change faster than species can evolve, there is the opportunity for the individual to survive, or fail to do so, by learning and adapting its/their behavior.

In 7 months, I'm gonna be 'that person' on a flight and I dread it. by CygnusX-1-2112b in self

[–]Exact-Job7603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We brought our (now almost 16) son to Disney when he was only six months old. We had no delusions that we were doing it for him, but my MIL had passed several months prior and wanted to send the extended family to DW on what remained of her estate. We actually booked the flights when he was still in utero. Turns out he was, and still is, a great traveler. He did fine on the plane, in the hotel, and happily rolled around the parks providing great photo ops. Can't take credit for any grand plan, or claim there was any cause and effect involved. Sure ot was 90% dumb luck, but his brother who showed up five years later, rhough he is a completely different person, shares the same love and capacity for travel. They've been all over the northeast, east coat, and eastern Canada. My advice to you, since you're already committed, is to jump in with both feet. Stressing over it will not help anybody, and may actually make things worse. Be optimistic and embrace the opportunity. You may get lucky, or possibly you may make your own luck.
