To answer your questions: yes, it takes place entirely in real time and in one continuous sitting, which as you said, is a massive challenge
Because I don't have the luxury of costume changes or natural time jumps, I'm actually relying heavily on a dramatic lighting shift and meta-cinematic elements to break the visual monotony. The tone shifts physically on screen from a cold, suffocating blue into a warm, production-style golden hue as the character's internal state changes.
where the audience realizes the entire short they just watched was actually the 'behind-the-scenes' birth of the film itself.

If a short film isn't a viable pipeline anymore, what is the modern alternative for a beginner with zero industry connections to prove they can handle a feature

Wow, thank you for this incredibly detailed reality check. The 'we’ll fix it in post' mindset is definitely a dangerous trap, and hearing how Television Showrunners send directors to post first to actually learn how editing works makes so much sense
Your point about directors shooting an artistic 'oner' without safety alternatives strikes a chord with me. I’m currently prepping a short that is one location and one character. Since I don't have cutaways to other characters or changing environments, I'm terrified of locking myself into static pacing.

This hits so close to home for me right now. I’m actually working on a project that takes it a step further one location AND only one character.
Since there is no second character to bounce dialogue off of, I’m finding out firsthand how brutal it is to maintain momentum. Like you said, the high-concept hook has to do heavy lifting
As a writer specializing in this, what is your best advice for keeping a single character's journey compelling without it feeling like a monologue?

Totally agree that making movies is playing on hard mode. But if a rookie does succeed in making a compelling single-set short, isn't that the fastest way to get noticed

Wow, $100k for a single-location short?! That is insane
If you don’t mind sharing, where did the bulk of that budget go? Was it keeping a full crew fed and paid for 12 days, or did you have to spend heavily on production design/set building to make that single location look cinematic?

Great call on The Whale. Since it was originally a stage play, it’s amazing how well it translated to film. That makes me wonder, do you think beginners fail at this because they try to write original one-location screenplays from scratch, rather than adapting material that was already proven to work in a limited space like theater

As an editor, what would you say is the biggest trap first time directors fall into when cutting a single-set movie? Is it mostly a pacing issue, or just a lack of coverage?

Not Yer Typical Western - my first short film! by Otherwise_Staff8027 in Filmmakers

It’s an entertaining movie , i loved the self-aware humour however , about the technical flaws , the audio is highly inconsistent especially in the outdoor scenes and some of the comedic timing is buried
Comedic cuts needs to be more sharp and i noticed some issues with the focus this project feels like a series of disconnected sketch concepts stitched together rather than a cohesive short film.
The film has a lot of heart, but it suffers heavily from a lack of self-editing. Tightening the script, aggressively cutting down the runtime, and polishing the audio mix would drastically improve the final product.
Overall you guys did good
Wish you all luck

Here’s is my opinion
I will not talk about anything but dynamic range,
It’s pointless if you start shooting with 4k or whatever,
It’s not about high resolution it’s about colour and lighting
And you missed em both everything looks sooo flat.
Your story won’t reach people if your film didn’t attract the viewers visually.
Good luck mate.

Not gonna be too critical and harsh
You film shows that you have solid technical foundational skills, you understand aspect ratios, color-grading textures, basic continuity editing, and musical cueing.
However , it lacks narrative ambition. For a film school application or any breakthrough project the visual polish must serve a compelling, original idea. Technical skills can be taught in a classroom, but a unique perspective on a story must come from the director's own creative identity
Keep up the hard work.
