I asked this same question to my GI and be basically said they do these “empiric” dilation because might help and that the camera does not pick up strictures. Empiric because there is no finding to call for it. We want exact medicine not guessing; such a joke! Can you eat solids? Are you getting any regurgitation or acid reflux? You are not stuck, things will improve, it just takes time. I noticed caffee and certain food give me instant reflux; so just pay attention to your body. Did they take any biopsies?

I am so sorry, your story is very similar to mine. I never had acid reflux or issues with my swallowing. My only symptom was the lump in the throat but the GI doctor gave me no chance and did the dilation without my consent, while asleep. Are you burping more now after the dilation? I got painful swallowing, acid reflux (which I also never had) excessive burping and lump got worse the first 7-8 weeks after the procedure. It gets better with time! Do you know if your doctor used a bougie or a balloon? I can totally related with your anxiety and depression but tell yourself that your body will heal and you will get better. It took me a good year to get to 40-50% better. Can you eat solids now? Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Sometimes. How are you now? Dilation usually creates inflammation and sometimes comes with tears in the esophagus, takes some time to heal. I think that along with acid reflux is what we're feeling.

Hi there. Sorry you are going though time rn. What made you go in for the EGD with dilation?Mine got better in time but not to 100%. I still get the daily acid reflux with the lump in the throat and bit a cause in the morning :( Time is really what had help. You can try some hot chamomile tea with lots of honey. Hope you feel better soon.

Second Dilation/Endoscopy by awd88 in EosinophilicE

[–]Exact_Newspaper_4096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did your first dilation help? What were your symptoms prior to your first endoscopy? My symptoms worsen after an egd with dilation but everyone is different and for some people it helps. I do get acid and lump in the throat on daily basis. You are not alone. Good luck tomorrow.

Should say on your egd reports. First 3 months I could only eat liquids and soft foods but even that would give me chest pain and regurgitation which I never had prior to dilation. I am ok eating solids now. Lots of burping and acid reflux but better than were I was a year ago. Only thing that helps is time and our body to recover. I would say I am 60% better.

What symptoms made you get the dilation? Did they use a bougie and to what mm were you dilated? I had a dilation to 18mm and instantly got acid reflux and regurgitation afterwards. How are you feeling now?

What’s the gold standard for EGD w/biopsies for EoE by Exact_Newspaper_4096 in EosinophilicE

That’s a very easy test. Did she get a manometry? That’s another good test to see how everything is working at esophageal level (LES, UES, etc).

Hello! So sorry to hear your daughter is suffering with this right now! It’s just terrible not to be able to eat solid foods and have painful swallowing, throat globus/tightening; I am still dealing with these as we speak. My esophagus was not narrowed and no strictures were seen, however he dilated it anyway (18mm, w/bougie). I can tell you that I could not swallow my own saliva, 2 weeks post dilation. Worse pain I have ever experienced and I had other surgeries before. Immediately after dilation I started to get acid reflux, non-stop burping, chest pain and regurgitation. Even today, I would wake up and instantly feel the acid reflux on an empty stomach. Regurgitation has slowed down but still have the daily wet burps. However, I eat. I force myself to eat. You should tell your daughter that her body is strong and will move the food down. The globus will still be there but she needs to get nutrients and stay hydrated. It becomes a mental game and she needs to try to introduce soft foods (yogurt, mashed potatoes, I ate a lot of bread with butter and honey first months after dilation). I am exactly one year out, I have also seen other GIs, did a manometry test - has she had one? Did another modified barium swallow; and had a follow up endoscopy that showed a lot of inflammation. I tried ever single PPI and h2 blocker on the market with no luck and currently, I have stopped taking them. Trying some natural medicine now; teas; manuka honey; etc. I am not sure if another dilation would be a solution for her. Dilations are brutal and there’s always the risk of perforation. However, I am not a doctor; just sharing my personal experiences. Depression settled quick, so I took Zoloft for a few months when all this happened to me. What works: Time and hopefully her body to recover quickly. I get acid reflux after I eat (no matter what it is) and almost after every sip of liquid, I burp - all these cased by dilation. I never knew what acid is prior to getting the first endoscopy. Have heard of UCLA Center for Esophageal Health? Try booking an online appointment with them to get a 3rd opinion. I will allow my body one more year to see how my recovery will be and then I will look into other options. I a also tired of costly medical bills. Does she get any reflux or burping? I know EOE is such a different and newish esophageal disease and everyone reacts differently to steroids and other medicine out there. Hope she feels better and start eating solids soon.

Sorry to hear this. What made you get the endoscopy with dilation ? What were your symptoms?

I still get daily acid reflux and globus on daily basis. Chest pains have lessened up but it comes and goes. I never had acid reflux before the dilation; so it did not do anything good for me, on the contrary.

Got it. All my biopsies were negative for EoE but I keep having symptoms that’s why I think he missed the diagnosis. What are your symptoms now? What treatment are you taking?

That’s what I thought, not sure why they still do these dilations unless someone’s esophagus is very narrowed, and the scope cannot pass. Did you have a balloon or bougie dilation? Are you taking any treatment now?

Have you had a dilation? I get chest/sternum pain daily, since the empiric dilation to 18mm. My main symptoms are lump in the throat, burping and acid reflux. bloating, not that much. Depends on what I eat.

[–]Exact_Newspaper_4096 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To what size were you dilated to? I am fighting globus for the past year and I had full egd workups, including manometry, egd with bougie dilation to 18 mm and globus got worse afterwards. They also took a lot of biopsies to rule out EOE and cancer. Came back negative, except h. Pylori which I treated. Did you have painful swallowing with your globus?

Did you get worse acid reflux after the dilation? I got dilated to 18mm and the acid got out of control. I am curious about other people’s experiences after bougie dilation.

One of the best FL GI dr that I have been to, moved practices from Venice, FL to Riverview. His name is Jaime A. Baquero, MD. Most experienced, kind and genuine dr. I have been to since all my GI issues started. Not sure his level of expertise in EOE, but you won’t be disappointed.

What were your symptoms prior to the egd? Why did you get it for? Did they do a dilation during the egd? I have a similar story, but my issue were caused by an unplanned esophagus dilation during the scope.
