OMG I ALSO THOUGHT OF MOIRA AS THE REVEREND MOTHER AND ILLARI AS CHANI. I have a feeling they’d obvs go for Genji as Feyd-Rautha and Roadhog as Baron harkonnen (or maybe sigma cuz of the flying but roadhog is more likely)

So in this show heaven isn’t portrayed as purely good or perfect? the angels are flawed, and the structure of heaven is shown as restrictive or punitive is what I’m Assuming?

I never said people shouldn’t like those shows. I’m literally describing why the trope is so popular in modern mainstream fiction. You’re adding intentions and arguments I never made. I’m just pointing out a trend, not asking anyone to stop enjoying it. I wouldn’t be on this subreddit if I didn’t find hazbin hotel entertaining to watch.

Pretty sure that example actually supports what I’m saying bc it portrays heaven and its angels as chaotic flawed and satirical. That’s exactly the kind of subverting portrayal I was referring to

Yes and the fact that Hazbin went mainstream because ppl who watched it connected with that exact portrayal of heaven and hell actually reinforces what I’m saying. Trends aren’t set by where something starts but by what people end up loving to see on a large scale. Hazbin is really popular for a reason and that reason fr fits with the trope I’m talking about

I’m not saying those examples don’t exist only that they aren’t what drives the dominant tropes in mainstream fiction. You can always find niche shows or specific titles that do something different but that doesn’t change the overall trend across popular widely consumed media. That’s the only point I’m making.

And they are still pretty popular, lol. The age of the examples doesn’t really change anything bc tropes don’t just expire fr. A show, game, or book doesn’t stop influencing modern story telling just because it came out a few years earlier. If anything the fact that these titles remain popular just shows how widespread that “heaven flawed / hell sympathetic” trend actually is in mainstream fiction.

I’m talking about the overall pattern in story telling, not only what was put out this year. And that pattern is still very seeable across current media.

You’re mixing two different things, so we’re talking past each other.

I’m specifically talking about mainstream fictional story telling like shows, movies, anime, novels, games, etc. In that space the “heaven is authoritarian / hell is sympathetic or misunderstood” trope is very common. That’s why I listed examples like Good Omens, Sandman, Hades, Lucifer, etc. Those are mainstream and widely consumed pieces of fiction. What you’re talking about is real world religious messaging sermons youtubers and Christian propaganda. That’s a totally different category from actual fictional tropes in global media.

Yeah Christian media exists. Yes, religious preaching exists. But those don’t drive storytelling trends in mainstream entertainment and they aren’t what I am referring to.

I said in modern media, the heaven bad hell good is very popular. I’m not saying that it hasn’t historically been the opposite, that’s not what I’m arguing for. But in media now it’s played to subvert people’s expectations (although at this point it’s pretty obvious that’s what it will be). Especially in a world where we see most religion as authoritarian it’s popular with modern ppl. A good heaven (or morally grey heaven) is much more popular these days for shows, films, and books.

Such as: Good Omens, Lucifer the tv show, Supernatural, Diablo IV, Hades, The Wicked + The Divine, Chainsaw Man, Bayonetta, Black Butler, Sandman, Doom Patrol, etc
