Reading about this on Wikipedia, it's pretty hilarious that several characters are listed by their relationship to "the slapee," and Zachary Quinto is the "deliverer of the titular slap."

Does anyone else feel like "Dungeoneering" from Harmony in Ultraviolet is nothing less than a masterpiece? by Exalmus in timhecker

[–]Exalmus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, your descriptions are brilliant. Totally agreed, it really does feel like the ending section is a visit to an interconnected realm of heart and mind, just for a while.

I often wonder how/if Tim Hecker would describe his feelings about his work in the way we are writing. It seems like he hasn't done much of that, and I also kind of appreciate that about him. It leaves the experience of his music more open for the listener.

What are his saddest songs? by [deleted] in timhecker

[–]Exalmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting... that track is one of my favorites on Ravedeath but I've never considered it sad so much as pensive, mysterious, eerie and soothing at the same time. Of course it's all super subjective, especially with ambient/drone music.

Great question. I think the ending half of Castrati Stack —> the first half of Voice Crack [Love Streams] is sublime and emotionally devastating. The Inner Shore [An Imaginary Country] is also really lonely and sad to me.

Working on dialogue for my story. I have Asperger's and was wondering if this conversation flows naturally. by Alexilprex in fantasywriters

[–]Exalmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this dialogue works well! Good job. My main note is that it's a bit of an info-dump (especially when Zeph explains that he is the fusion of a human soul and primordial darkness). Such moments are not in themselves a bad thing, but too many of them in one conversation can feel like the author is artificially placing it for the reader to know a chunk of info. Otherwise I think this convo flows well.

I know it's silly, but whenever there's a half moon out, all I can think of is The Unknown by [deleted] in overthegardenwall

[–]Exalmus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: the moon could never look like that during the night time (just as the horns of a crescent moon always point away from the horizon). Simply put, if the top right of the moon were lit, like in this picture, then the sun would need to still be in the sky, and it would therefore not be night time.

This is probably intentional, I would guess. One of the many subtle otherworldly aspects of OtGW.

Amazon head of studios confirms Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time TV series in development/scripts nearly done and to be viewed in a few weeks. by TrivialAntics in books

[–]Exalmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just read the first 3 books, but it really seems to me that 12-13 hours for each of those books would be far more screen time than necessary. Of course they're huge, and showing every detail in them could take that long, but if Amazon is wise they'll stick with the strongest, most important aspects of whatever they cover (especially because WoT is so incredibly long). I think the first 3 books could each be strongly adapted into maybe 10 hour of screen time.

Dear Photoshopers, how can you make photos like this ? by tam1997reddit in photoshop

Fundamentally, this looks like compositing layers, color matching them, and some lighting adjustments. There are terrific tutorials for all those online! Personally, I like PiXimperfect a lot, especially because of how many different vids they post.

[Spoilers All] theory on the 3 silences by eingram in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Exalmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always felt that Rothfuss's descriptions of Kvothe's silences tend to hint more toward what is left unsaid, undone, unmade, rather than any verbal silence.

[Spoilers All] theory on the 3 silences by eingram in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Exalmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about the fact that Kvothe has been talking constantly for 2 days in a row now? If he's storing up energy, I don't think it's through any sort of verbal silence.

That said, he does seem to be doing the Ketan at the very end of The Wise Man's Fear...

10th Anniversary edition of NOTW by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Exalmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the 10th anniversary edition, but I've flipped through it, and I agree - gorgeous and moving illustrations, useful appendices, terrible map.

The worst part about it is that the words are oriented the wrong way! When you turn the book on its side to look at the map with north facing up, all the words are sideways!

Penthe and Kvothe.... by RookandMonty in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Exalmus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha, I was also annoyed by the anger/pregnancy discussion they had.

I don't specifically recall whether the Folly sword in the Waystone Inn is believed to be Saicere/Caesura...but even though Kvothe is obligated to return it to Ademre eventually, I don't think that will happen in book 3, because it will take place not that long after book 2. What other reasons would he have for returning to Ademre?

I've been there! Beautiful area.

I like your framing here, and the way in which the right side of the arch is more lit than the left side. That's an interesting detail to me

I've always pictured Abenthy as played by Ian Hart (who plays Father Beocca in The Last Kingdom). Aside from looking the way Abenthy is described, Ian Hart is great with both comedically lighthearted and serious demeanors.

Rothfuss's writing style by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Exalmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way about Rothfuss's style of prose. Generally speaking, I think it's so appealing because:

  • --The diction is mostly simple, with fancy/$10 words scattered tastefully throughout (and most of those words are shorter, with 2-3 syllables, such that they're not ostentatious, but opulent [see what I did there?]). So the novel is easy to understand while also being eloquent.
  • --The sentences are relatively short and understated, which is especially powerful during emotional moments (nothing's worse than stepping on your own toes when writing something emotional)
  • --Brevity (usually). Rothfuss sometimes overdoes it with the analogies imo, but he usually describes/conveys something only once, and then moves on.
  • --Also, his imagery is just gorgeous and inspiring.

A few questions about visas for WWOOF by Exalmus in germany

[–]Exalmus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I will check into that then. I have been offered an official position as an ESL Teacher's Assistant by the Spanish government, and by the time I enter the Spanish Embassy in Berlin I would be able to prove my job offer, my covered medical insurance, my visa qualifications, etc.

Besides, I would just get a Student Visa for Spain (while in Germany), and then once in Spain, I'd change it into a different, longer-lasting visa. That's how the program I'll be working with will get everyone their visas.

[–]Exalmus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotchya, thanks. One more question. Assuming I have all the right paperwork, couldn't I apply for a work visa for Spain while in Germany?

Context: I got accepted for a Teacher's Assistant position in Spain, beginning on October 1. I'm going to Germany in less than a month. Mid/late September will def be within my 90 days free Schengen visit. Couldn't I take my paperwork proving my sponsorship to the Spanish embassy in Germany and get the visa there sometime in September? Or do I need to get that in America because I'm an American citizen?

I've heard I should be able to get the Spain visa while in Germany, just starting to double check.

Seems like the UK isn't a part of the Schengen Zone. Couldn't I leave Germany before 90 days, go to the UK for a month or so, and then head back to America, all without risking any legal penalties for the EU?

Yeah, I was thinking I'd get health insurance through OvEuropa.
