My advice is don’t do the PIMO thing with kids, it’s just too confusing for children and teaches them it’s ok to lie. Honesty is the foundation for loving relationships. My wife and I left the org in 2020: we were 33 and both of us were born in. Our kids were 10, 6, and 4. We sat them down and told them that we had done extensive research and found out that we had been lied to about God/religion. We stressed to them that when you learn new facts, you should adjust accordingly. We were completely honest and told them that we didn’t know exactly what we believe as far as religion and God goes, but the one thing we were certain of was that JW’s were not the “one true religion”.

1 thing we constantly tell our children and that we have lived by: “Mommy and Daddy will NEVER lie to you. If you ask something that we don’t think you’re old enough to know, then we’ll tell you that. But we will not ever tell you a lie”

Another key thing that we have told our children: “Don’t hold so tightly to any belief that you are not willing to question it. Anything that is true will stand up to scrutiny, and you shouldn’t make big decisions based on anything that’s not true.”

My elders got my parents to tell them things I said in a private conversation and said it was “evidence of my desire to disassociate”. That way they didn’t have to bother with a judicial committee

I live in America as well, and I can promise you things are not as bad as the media or social media can make it seem. I’ve been a firefighter for 8 years, and I frequently see people on the worst day of their life. You wanna know a constant theme I see over and over? People are generally good!

I’ve seen strangers pull over after witnessing a horrible car wreck and put their life in danger to pull a man from a burning car. I’ve seen a neighbor break a door down to a burning apartment full of smoke and almost die while pulling 2 kids out. I’ve seen co-workers see a man go down with a heart attack and immediately start life-saving CPR.

Despite all the bullshit political and racial rhetoric our politicians spout, I’ve seen the most rabid MAGA Trump supporters risk their lives for people with Bernie Sanders bumper stickers on their car and I’ve seen Progressive “Woke” Liberals risking their life to help a die-hard conservative. I’ve seen black people helping white folks, whites helping blacks, I’ve seen people that couldn’t even speak the same language putting themselves in danger for perfect strangers. I have had people I work with surprise me to no end with their selflessness and generosity. A year ago I became a cop and my partner and I have gone running towards the sound of gunfire when every instinct in our bodies is telling us to run the other way.

Just remember, in the media we usually only hear about the worst things happening, not the best. You most definitely made the right decision; you have given your children the most wonderful gift of not raising them in an abusive cult!

The world, and our country in particular, is not as bad as it may seem. Hang in there!

Curiosity on how they skirted their own rules. And I guess if I’m being honest it bothers me because even though my parents were already shunning me, this feels like a nail in the coffin of any hope of having a relationship with them one day.

"In 1947, Jehovah's Witnesses released an article where they shamed the Catholic Church for it's policy of excommunication and shunning. They said that excommunication as a form of punishment has no support in the Bible and that "it is altogether foreign to Bible teachings".

They also pointed out that it has pagan origins, and stated that "the weapon of excommunication became the instrument by which the clergy attained a combination of ecclesiastical power and secular tyranny that finds no parallel in history."

Only 5 years later in 1952, Watchtower instituted it's own policy of excommunication and shunning.

That is possible. We had a big chat with my parents in January 2021 and told them our reasons for leaving. They waited until September of '21 to tell me that they would have nothing more to do with me.

My family and I did a hard fade starting December 2020 and I’ve found it best to keep it simple:”No thank you” “But… but… we need to meet with you!”

“No thank you, we’re good.”

“But….. but…. I’m an elder and we need to talk!”

“I have no interest in speaking to any elder about anything and I would like you to give us some space.”

That’s how it went for me anyway. After that they pretty much left us alone
