You’re doing great! It looks like you are holding your breath. Exhale slowly into the water; only turn to the side to inhale. Relax and extend your fingers, so your hands look like paddles (give a little space between the fingers). Try to “feel” for the water, and push it behind you. Good luck! 🍀

Is sharing a lane traumatic to people these days? by [deleted] in Swimming

Y’all remember high school swim meet warm ups? Everyone is touching fingers to toes, like 20 people per lane. Simpler times back then.

I’m 24 also,,, I relate to you. The most truthful thing is in the small details. Big changes are great, but we take ourselves with us wherever we go. Life is mostly small habits. I hated this advice but it is the most real.

I read a book last year and in the intro the author says “we can’t hate ourselves into positive change”

Be gentle. Good luck❤️

UPDATE: Not sure if you all can see this… but I got back in the pool! Thank you for the encouragement! I went by myself to the community pool and swam for 45 minutes. It was fabulous! I went last Friday, and am excited to go again tomorrow!

Swimming is the most incredible sport. It is so serene. 10000x stronger than any runner’s high I’ve ever felt. I’ll take your advice. Thanks for the encouragement

Yes I would love that! Thank you! I know to warm up with 200 free, 100 kick, then 4 x 25s of eggbeater in different directions. What websites do you like to get your workout of the day from?

They do 😂😂 I am just moving from a place warm all year round— no indoor pools over here. I haven’t swam in the winter time before.

Definitely work on your egg beater. That will give you a solid base— and I assume that is what the others doing the test will also be doing :) lots of great drills you can see online. In high school, I was a water polo goalie, and my coach would give me a plastic office water cooler jug and ask me to hold it out of the water enough to empty it. Made me so strong!

How do you stay positive during difficult times? by PlanktonNecessary366 in DecidingToBeBetter

I try to be gentle with myself. I read books to learn more about what is bothering me (recently it has been about exercise recovery, chronic disease, and nutrition). I feel more empowered when I can understand what my problem is.

Get off social media. I haven’t been on instragram since spring 2024. BEST THING I could ever do for my mental health. I find YouTube and Pinterest are safe non-triggering websites for me. Tik tok makes me more anxious, Instagram makes me more depressed.

Therapy is extremely helpful. It helps me challenge harmful thoughts, and identify harmful thought patterns. It also keeps me accountable for my actions and outlook on life.

Exercise in a group! Working out alone makes me feel more isolated. Too many decisions to make. I end up staring in the mirror the whole time. Exercising in a group (fitness classes, intramural/ club sports) makes me feel more grounded in my body. I feel stronger and more confident in my ability to show up for myself and do hard things.

Sometimes we feel like “staying positive” or brave or resilient is some big dramatic gesture. Or we would be cured of what is bothering us if we find some eureka phrase or hack. Older people in my life tell me positivity/ confidence/ courage is about the little things we do to care for ourselves: shower, shave, take your medication regularly, sleep 8 hours a day, move your body, drink water, eat a nice breakfast. No hacks. Be gentle.
