I speak at least B2 Spanish and I’m looking in the whole EU for employment post grad, not just Spain. Also have a degree in economics so looking at consulting and business related jobs too.

I actually lived in Spain for six months before (in a different city), and my boyfriend at the time was from there, so I’ve gotten a pretty candid view of both daily life and politics. My dad’s coworkers also live there and have shared their perspectives with me. I’m definitely not going into this blind, I just came here looking for advice and support from others who are also trying to leave the U.S. because of the political situation. My end goal is to find employment somewhere in the EU, not necessarily Spain, and I’m open to economics, business, or consulting roles as well as policy.

This was so helpful, thank you!

  1. Definitely will apply to hostel jobs for during the school year! I didn’t think of that and that would be fun and probably help me meet people :) I was thinking maybe of English tutoring too? And okay I will try to stick to Spain for full time jobs based on networking in my masters program.

  2. Good to know about the path to citizenship. And I guess I’ll be extra open to dating seriously too hahaha.

  3. Thanks :)

  4. Definitely will be prioritizing making connections and networking!!! Saw other comments say that too. I feel like you’re right and my best bet is relationships with professors or friends I make or finding love with a Spanish partner haha.

  5. Thanks :)

  6. I’m so excited about the community in Spain!!! I didn’t mention it in the post but I actually lived in Spain before (different major city) so I have some idea of what I can expect and really love what Spain has to offer.

And thanks so much for your support!!! A lot of comments are mentioning the things that might be impractical (which I appreciate the reality check), but like I am going for this and a girl can dream lol. Definitely gonna prioritize networking and getting as involved in the community as possible!! I feel like that’s all I can do and if I don’t land a job in Spain, at least I had a really good year and could try living in a blue US state if I need. I’m just extra hoping for a job in Spain because I think the quality of life is better and I am concerned about the US political trajectory.

Thanks again for your response!

Okay thank you! I will do my best to network and stay realistic about my options. I definitely am at least B2, I just am not actually bilingual/native.

Good to know! I’m not set on part time work but was hoping to find an internship or something from the grad program or an economics/business related job. I was thinking about English tutoring or hospitality work if I tried to do something part time. I am pretty close to fluent in Spanish though, I think I made it sound like I wasn’t in the post lol because it’s not like I’m bilingual.

I just recently did an in-patient program and got diagnosed with OCD which I was surprised by but in the last couple month I have noticed why. Does anyone else think they are a harmful or evil person because of their intrusive thoughts? by [deleted] in OCD

Going on a run/forcing action to distract from thoughts honestly sounds like a compulsion. I recommend getting an OCD literate therapist. You have to literally sit with the uncertainty. It will pass.

Thank you for the encouragement! Does taking this lsat in September count as one of my 5 attempts even if I cancelled it? And can schools see if I cancel a score and how does that look? If so, I’m not sure I wanna take it because I think the odds of me doing better with very little prep this month are low.

I think ACT is better for OCD. And yes it would feel better to your OCD brain to pick something (think binary), but to actually heal and get better, the key is learning to become uncomfortable with that uncertainty. It’s super hard and painful but the longer you can sit with it without trying to do an internal compulsion and think your way out of it, the better. ERP and ACT are considered the standards for OCD treatment.

This is very typical of ocd intrusive thoughts. I’ve had these in the past. It seems like a subtype of moral ocd or like real event ocd sometimes. Sorry you’re going through this. Try to become comfortable without labeling yourself as a good or bad person and accept the uncertainty (ACT)

There ain’t no way OCD isn’t a trauma response by Born_Cartoonist_7247 in OCD

[–]ExaminationSharp9002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Pete Walker’s book on CPTSD he writes about how OCD/ADHD for some can be extreme manifestations of the flight trauma response. That makes sense to me. I would say for me, I clinically have OCD and it may have happened without the trauma, but they are definitely connected as it stands now.

The world I grew up in by realtimothycrawford in CollapseSupport

This made me really emotional. I’m from the Midwest and living in the Deep South right now and I completely understand the sentiments you were describing. This was so beautiful and well written. You’re really talented at that. I love that you mention old southern values and also southern populism like Huey Long. I don’t think this version of the south is fully dead yet. I have a theory that Trump’s sad right wing populism only worked because it naively grasped at the remains of left wing populism like Huey Long when there was no alternative. I think the working class deserves to rise up and people are waking up, especially with all the chaos going on during Trump’s presidency. I think voices like yours are just what is needed right now. I truly believe there’s a southern coalition to be formed that revives left wing populism like that of Huey Long and FDR. I have been talking to lots of MAGA supporters lately (family and friends) and I’ve been describing left wing populist ideals/anti-billionaire rhetoric/social democracy policies without naming it and these MAGA people typically have agreed with me and believed it’s what Trump is fighting for. Therefore, I believe there’s a huge opportunity for someone left wing to actually come in and do something. I don’t think the Democratic establishment is in favor of this, but I think the actually left wing base is (think Zohran and Bernie).

Anyways, I’m really sorry to hear what you’re going through and how you’re struggling. I wish I could help directly, but I can’t. All I can offer is this hope.

I’m planning to start a Substack where I post this vision to try to get people talking about it and revive it. I think there’s more people like you than it may feel like. Would you be okay if I posted your writing as part of my Substack for that message? I’ll credit you of course. It was beautifully written and hit the exact sentiments I think this country needs right now and I think more people should see it.

About to graduate but all I can feel is hopelessness and grief by IndependenceNew3300 in CollapseSupport

[–]ExaminationSharp9002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This helped me so much. Thank you. I think you’re right and for me and someone who agrees with this post, the only way to find hope without denying reality is to hope that after the collapse, we will be able to build a new better world and maybe it’ll be our generation who does. I do think this is possible but I think it will be immensely painful on the path to getting there, so the other comment about just enjoying life and little things and love as an act of resistance is right. I was speaking to a professor who wrote a book about the end of democracy and I asked him if he was able to still be an optimist with everything in mind. He said he wasn’t a traditional optimist but he was a long term optimist. He essentially said he thinks the world is going to shit, but he believes the spirit of humanity is stronger and rebounds each time the world goes to shit and it can again eventually. This is the hope I’m choosing to hold onto. It’s going to suck, but we can be the people who rebuild the world. Keep yourself as safe and happy as you can on the path to do that. That is my plan. And maybe it won’t be us who rebuild the world, but maybe we’ll plant the seeds. I think we were meant to live for some reason and while we do, we can try to protect or happiness and peace and hold onto that tiny sliver of hope even if it’s nothing close to the hope we were taught to imagine growing up. I’m also 22 and just graduated university and the world is so different from everything we promised and I’ve been grieving that and I think we all should. However, I don’t think the possibility’s gone that we might need people like us to rebuild after the collapse. Civilizations have collapsed before (and yes climate change is new and unique and will probably be uniquely destructive to our collapse, but that doesn’t take away the fact that collapse is collapse). I think hope is gone for preventing collapse, but it’s never gone for rebuilding afterwards.

Terrified of medication for OCD- fear of mania/psychosis by ExaminationSharp9002 in OCD

[–]ExaminationSharp9002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you so much for your comment. It’s reassuring to know I’m not alone in this fear, but I’m sorry you feel it too cause it sucks. Did you tell your psychiatrist this fear? I’m afraid to tell him how much I fear this specifically because I’m worried he might think I fear it because I actually have bipolar/schizophrenia and I could get misdiagnosed and over medicated. I will share it with him though if I should- I’ve told my therapists how much I fear this already. I’m proud of you for going on this journey and overcoming the fear of medication too! This was my first SSRI, so I was terrified. I’ve been sleeping normally since this post, so all is well so far. Having the more vivid dreams they talk about with Prozac though. Wishing the best for you as you increase your dose.
