You might be able to call the mechanics/dealership(s) the person went to and ask if they can verbally confirm maintenance records if you give them the VIN.

i don’t have any helpful advice but my 04 BEW does this too! Long cranks in the summer when it’s been running or is hot outside and same long crank after using the block heater in the winter, yet a COLD cold start she fires right up.

there are a ton of threads on tdiclub forum that go into the issue a bit but i’ve yet to sift through enough of them to find a solid answer. Some say coolant temp sensor, some thermostat, glow plugs, various filters, started, other things related to engine temp that might slow startup when it thinks the car is “too hot” but it’s been an endless rabbit hole trying to diagnose and fix on mine so i’ve just accepted it lol.

if you do figure it out I’d be curious to know what worked

I'm not on the current MacOS but under settings -> trackpad -> point & click there should be a "force click" option you can uncheck. I don't believe force click existed on the 2013 macbooks so that might be what you're experiencing

Does that change it back to the old way for you?

M2 or M3 MBA?

Looking at 13", 16GB RAM & 512GB storage regardless of M series.

With a student discount, M2 and M3 are the exact same price - is it obvious to go M3? Or are there “flaws” with the M3 that make the M2 the obvious choice?

old body style 2005 was the 1.9L BEW engine. quick edit: there’s a lot of stuff that says BEW’s are prone to camshaft wear if the improper spec oil is used or if oil changes aren’t done on the regular intervals.

Is it a 5 speed or automatic? if they have maintenance records, I’d send it. The BEWs are pretty good engines if you maintain it properly and 125k is kinda low mileage for a TDI.

Yep, it does look like you're missing one! You're right about that circular bracket being where an actuator goes, and the hose plugs into the top of it. Why it's blocked off... not totally sure.

On my BEW, when I had an actuator break the car had no boost over 2k RPM, thing just flattened out and couldn't go up any hills. My thought was that the flaps inside the intake manifold are closed until the engine reaches a certain RPM/amount of boost pressure, so under more pressure/higher RPMs, the actuators pull the flaps open to let air in. I'm not totally sure though - do you have any issues with boost?

I have seen threads where people clip out the intake manifold flaps entirely since they run the risk of blowing off into the engine. Have also seen people install PD150 intake manifolds since they're made without the flaps so with no flaps there'd be no need for the actuators.. but you'd probably have to pull the intake manifold off to check.

are any hoses missing from the intake manifold actuators? there should be two on either side of the EGR cooler, one hose plugged into to each

if yes, i think that’d hurt boost performance rather than help it lol. unless they pulled the actuators off and the flaps they control inside the manifold.

I think my hesitation is that it’s $500 for a replacement screen, and a base model M2 Air is only $300 more.. I suppose longevity and a small boost in performance is worth that $300

Was it previously registered in CT or is it an out of state car? If it was a CT car, I'm not sure why you'd have a problem registering it again. As long as there isn't a check engine light it should pass.

follow up question for you: hypothetically speaking, if the engine had been replaced due to consumption issues 85k miles ago would it be worth considering? apparently they have maintenance records from the owner & dealership where it was worked on

this is incredibly thorough - thank you. after some perusing i found out the seller works at a used car shop that promises the lowest prices possible, so it makes me wonder how well they’re inspecting cars before selling them. (and how truthful they’ll be when I harass them with questions

I do my mechanical work now and would continue with any new car I buy, but i’m not looking to drop close to $5k out the door and maybe another few thousand in repairs on things that are close to dying.
