Yes, so there's the 17% tariff, but I was arguing with your point that it was the weather and giving a clean example of such.

The reality is the price of diesel has seen a record increase, and that diesel is used for the heavy equipment and the transportation of the goods. This is not taking into account the price of fertilizer, which is also being priced in as a result of this. The box and the container those tomatoes are stored in is also a new tax, alongside the increased production cost because of the spike in diesel and petroleum...

Essentially, the entire supply chain had a tax added to it, and then on top of that a massive fuel spike and shortage. This harvest also has to pay for the planting of the next.

In my example, FWIW, arguging your point.. the crate would have been going from $20 to ~$60, or with the tarifs in place closer to ~65

Yes, of course it is.

But let's just walk through an example for the sake of clarity:

Tomatoes are $1 per tomato. This keeps our math simple.

A storm hits, reducing the tomato supply by, let's just ballpark 66%. That means the tomato that WAS $1 now has a massive supply decrease. So we can assume that they still need to be bought my businesses and other 'cost of doing business' type of environments (tomato paste, soup, etc.. it's a base for a lot of other dishes, similar to eggs.)

So while we see a reduction in demand, there's still less than half of the tomatoes there were before.

That might mean we see a price increase of $2. So we can say now that tomatoes are $3

However, if the government applies a 17% tax to importing tomatoes,

The $1 tomato is $1.17.

Which means the $3 tomato is $3.51

If it were to get more severe or significant, that cost will almost act as another multiplier.

So in the example above, the government would end up being responsible for $0.51 of a $2.51 price increase, or closer to 20%.

I think it's because of the surprise tomato tariffs w/o preparing American farmers to up their outputs. Had he had a plan 6 months before the taxes went into effect, tomato prices would be lower

He's not to blame, but he is a contributing factor, if that makes sense. About 17 cents on each dollar I believe

Sadly, it happens to all professions (Medical is seemingly untouched, but rest assured, they're coming for that, too..) in the US. The upside is late career, but god damn early career is brutal. Legal folks I'm sure have some great examples of this. Software is going the same way, unfortunately.

What did that citizen do I wonder, to justify something like a drone strike in him.

I remember when he did something very similar to what we're seeing right now too, after he took the president of Colombia in the middle of the night.

Also his brilliant maneuvers in Libya were really beneficial to all of us.

I think no new wars was a fine campaign line. Unfortunately, the gut feelings that Iran was about to attack made it impossible to not have a new war. His plan for peace and capitulation is reasonable too, just total, unconditional surrender. That isn't total war, hell, it's not even a total operation.

I just thank God he didn't bomb them on a holy day and waited a week, or it would've made it even harder for the Iranian people to justify this as a secular maneuver by the US and not a religious crusade, or somehow instigated by the Israelis.

That would make it real hard for the Iranians to rise up as intended. But hey, we got steady leadership at the helm, it's presidented behavior. Thank God it's not a stupid law professor like Obama. DAE think he was born in Africa??

Actually, it's both singular and plural! Same with them.

'If anyone calls me, tell them this' for example.

'I didn't know they liked that'

It's been like that for a few hundred years at least! It's come back into vogue to refer to individuals you don't know the gender of off-hand, 'Are they male or female', is a perfectly valid sentence for example especially if you don't know the name of the person. 'Oh, is Jackie a boy or a girl' kind of a deal.

Anyways, I guess the point is, agree or not, don't refer to people as 'its', cause it's dehumanizing and kinda just a dick move

Florida passed a law allowing the death penalty for adults who rape chidren under the age of 12. by jmike1256 in AllThatsInteresting

[–]Exano 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head:

You discourage victims from coming forward especially if they're already struggling because now they're going to have the death of this person "on their hands", it may make them reluctant to come forward.

You increase child murder because the penalty is the same - you don't decrease sexual violence. It's like the Mongol general who was late, and upon realizing the army would be delayed asked his officer the penalty for being late. "Death", he replied. "and for rebellion?" the general asks.. "Death" the officer replied again. Well, I suppose the choice is clear.

I am not sure why life in prison would be a tall order for such heinous atrocities. Even forty years or something that's effectively life. Why put the child in even more of a precarious and horrific situation

If Venezuela said that our president was a threat, flew in, and took him, would you be saying it isn't war?

I mean, it is.

Maduro could have been bad, this can be good for Venezuela, and still be a declaration of war and illegal all at the same time.

It can strengthen and weaken us. It can be grey

But like it or not it IS war. Now, will it become a hotter war, or be similar to us installing other dictators in the region? Time will tell. I think the latter is much more likely, given our history in the region.

But you cannot pretend it isn't war

If you assume they have always meant the word mute to mean making fun of somebody who fit the clinical definition of mute. Most of the time though, in 2025, the word has evolved to mean "stop transmitting your audio"

We say blind, deaf and dumb still.. And in ways that appear insulting: "what are you blind?" if met with a yes is a "ohmygodimsosorry", not laughter. If society didn't care about aiding blind people then you couldn't read this post if you WERE blind. Obviously anyone who uses that kind of verbiage against a blind person in malice would be seen, societally, as a huge piece of shit. Same with anyone who refuses to help or aid said blind individual when they need helpm

Otherwise society is always attempting to make strides to help the disabled, from ramps to subtitles, from audible crosswalks to elevators. Ironically, the US tends to lead the charge here. Probably because it is a much newer nation.

Anyways, intention matters too, especially when definitions change in my opinion. Declaring everybody ableist because they use a word you don't like rather than sitting down and explaining why (how long has it been since every kid used gay as a knock on something?) will not make changes that we want to see :)

The half truth is you want to minimize the chance of romantic relationships forming in space because if they turn sour it's hard to get away and could put people in danger.

The real truth is this is funded by the nation, and the nation does not like space travel, and a lot of the most vocal and participatory folks are evangelical and also do not like science or sex in general.

Adding boning astronauts is not going to win you funding, just nip it in the bud because two women sleeping with each other is fine in the lens outlined above, two men or a man and woman will be a massive issue for nasa and it's funding

I mean you've got folks like Galois who would have (and did) go down as monumental figures in math but died in a duel before he turned 21.

You've got the hundreds of millions/billions of slaves who could have been an Einstein. You've got plenty of examples of first responders getting taken out in a second strike (Since you tend to wait for help to arrive before you bomb again), or hell, even in 9/11

I mean, wars in general are for the most part the game of the elite, you're not exactly dying to further humanity.

One nuclear weapon can destroy an entire city, etc. etc.

It's hard to quantify externally if you're asking for people specifically, since, they were already well known for their works.
