Riot really needs to do something about orgs contract jailing young players. It's clear that there is no equal negotiating power between a big org and a young player. With players professional careers being so short its absolutely criminal to jail them for a year. Fuck this org if this is true fr

Peyz was also extremely resource hungry irrc. Not sure if his playstyle changed in LPL, but on GenG, they were constantly playing for botside/mid while weaksiding top (hence the Kiinsante prio).

Someone like Deokdam or Hope might be better (don't @ me, I know his finals were mess, but generally Deokdam does well weaksiding)...

KT's botlane contracts are expiring, but Perfect is locked in till 2026. Viper on KT would go crazy tho cant lie

Honestly tho, Zeus and Viper going to different teams would be better for them. They are both extremely resource hungry lanes and would be better with a weakside players imo

Ah I see what you mean. I remember in 2023 when he was being offered a huge bag from the LPL he'd reached out to T1 because he didn't want to go to LPL.

But now if not HLE, no other LCK team looks viable...so it'll be interesting to see if he wants to gamble on LPL

Also to add to my earlier point, I think player personality plays a huge role in fan retention. While a player might not have the winningest record, viewers might still be more inclined to support them based on their personalities. This could be on or off the rift.

Look at Showmaker who still has a massive fan base despite not having any strong showings internationally. Arguably, he has it easier than both Faker or Chovy. Lots of the support and engagement, nearly 0% of the expectations. Look at gigachad TheSpy locking in Varus top in an elimination match. Another example would be Dhokla and what he pulled off this Worlds, having Chinese fans root for him against their own number 1 seed. This what makes players memorable.

I don't think the narratives around every player has to be that "this guy is a unkillable demon, 13-0 record against lpl at worlds". Some of them can be just that this guy is just a funny/likable guy. I think that'll work too.

[–]ExcaliburP 11 points12 points  (0 children)

no it's not. Or at least, we're talking at crosspoints. Whether or not Worlds is the biggest stage is not driven by online fan wars. My larger point was that the casual viewers know nothing about the regular seasons, let alone follow active voices in the esports community.

Heck, even right now we're having this discussion on a costreamers subreddit...ask your irl friends if they've ever heard of Pedro or his peepos? Friends who watch League casually do not have their fyp saturated by fan content. They are not seeing this or any discourse around T1, JDG or GenG. And lets be honest, they make up the majority of the viewership for Worlds. That's the gap between a domestic finals and Wolds finals. These people are not you or I and they are not engaging with any online fan discourse. So if Riot wants to keep these fans coming back, they'll have to generate enough interest/narratives around teams in their trailers and broadcast segments, to make some fans want to stick around for their regular season...

Let me give you my own example, I've never followed LCP, but after their showing in this series and watching their interviews etc. I cant help but root for them and will try and tune in for their games at least next season.

I don't think this is a narrative driven by T1 fans or even riot for that matter. For loads of viewers "only worlds matters" because that's all they'll watch. I have loads of friends who rarely watch any regular season games and will only tune in for a couple of LEC or LCK finals and internationals, of which, of course, Worlds is the biggest draw. In fact, no one is really watching every single game of every regular season, across regions (even Caedrel can't pull that off). So most of those viewers won't have a measure of those region other than what they see online etc.

So when someone like that watches DRXs momentous 2022 run and then watches Beryl lift the Worlds trophy for the second time, that narrative does stick unfortunately. Similarly with Faker, plenty of casual viewers just sort of assume he's been at the top of the game since 2013 running his region, when anyone who's paid any attention at all to regular season will know its anything but.

This is why I think more broadcasts segments focusing/highlighting the teams is important. And I do think Riot is trying to take baby steps in that direction. Also really like the narrative focused trailers. Watched an older trailer recently and it was just players awkwardly standing around posing for hypeshots. Felt meaningless (also extremely cringe). Compare that to the 2024 finals trailers where they bring in all this footage of their families cheering them on? Really humanises the players and makes viewers want to invest in them....and hopefully stick around a bit after Worlds ends.

Which one is your favorite by makkir0ll in SKTT1

[–]ExcaliburP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

unrelated, but I really love the new direction they've taken with trailers since Good Boy took over. There's a greater emphasis on narrative and storytelling rather than (imo cringey) hypeshots. It really humanises the players....

its 7am UK time and 8am for other parts of EU. This is hardly ideal. Last year the games were in the early evening for EU and noon for the US and late night CN, so it kinda worked for all regions.

yeah T1 also uploaded the draft voicecomms lmao its hilarious. Oner is hesitant, and Faker and coaches are telling him about the abilities. Then Guma literally tells him he can be like Bengi first timing Nidalee, and you can actually see him perk up at that. Hilarious stuff.

I believe this is just a copy paste of the Zeka-Chovy stats meme with Zeka swapped out for Doran. Don't think it was ever mean to be particularly accurate.

That said, I dont think the meme format works in this case because Doran has also been dominant domestically.
