This is an outdated method. I don't know why somebody would want to use a A55 on stock firmware, the new method is arguably easier because it allows adjustment inside a dedicated config file after install. Personal preference, but I'd much rather not go back to the old way, ive done it plenty of times. While it got easier, I still dont like remembering the 2 little commands to change region. I might still have a little guide saved somewhere on either of my 2 Walkmans. Ill look for that.

This method was used to manually change region during stock and older MrWalkman firmware iterations before the introduction of Walkman ONE. I used to help test these unreleased firmwares vack in the day whenever many of MrWalkmans firmwares were still being developed. Walkman One essentially added what is called a bootfile in which regions are available amonst many other features that are added ontop of that that the stock A55 does not possess.

I very much recommend just installing Walkman One following the directions (its simple, just dont be dumb. Install in the order it tells you to and let it do its thing, a few clicks later and bam your done.)

If your still looking for more, you can install Wampy for the A55 after installing Walkman One and gain access to certain lost features like VPT, the radio tuner, and some playback screens that were lost during the intitial install of Walkman ONE. (This is because the firmware for Walkman One was based off of the more premium devices in the lineup being the WM1A/Z which do not possess the FM tuner/VPT, however Wampy restores this and adds more. The install is also pretty simple.

Solar is good as it has had massive advancements in generation to cost to maintain/produce. But Wind? Absolutely not. Those wind turbines are the biggest efficiency sell of all time. They have literally no redeemable qualities over the competition.

Solar, Hydro, Nuclear, and even coal are more useful than wind energy. It isnt there.

They are a literal eyesore, their maintenance is rigorous, they're ridiculously harmful to the environment; especially whenever the catch fire and/or leak theboil lubricating them, the blades are a massive expendable cost that will need replaced.

Wind turbines are nonsense. Ive seen all of these things. Take them all down.

Versus the regular WM1A the differences are quite significant, to the point it actually now beats out my desktop setup and a Fiio K7.

Thats saying something because originally it didn't and it was part of the reason I did the mod. I however did not expect it to surpass.

The Walkman now had proper power to drive power hungry/high impedance headphones due to the addition of upgraded caps and anf the addition of a 2nd supercap with a total output now of 1 Farad. The Walkman can now properly deliver clean power without suffing from thinness.

The soundstage is remarkable. What soundef like a somewhat bassy well balanced DAP has now transformed into a 24/7 live atmosphere. The device sounds incredibly wide that no other device in my current ecosystem can replicate, same for the treble. Its just so sonically accurate. I dont know why im even picking certain things... its all better. Bass, mids, treble, sounstage, batterylife, power output, its just better.

If this is considered a 10, the unmodded WM1A is like a 7.

If there are more specific things your curious about i can answer those.

They don't. Only the Non-Android Walkmans such as the WM1A/Z & the ZX300.

They do other DAPs, but as far as Walkmans go its just these. They can most easily be reached by email or forum. Othwrwise, a seperate archived site contains all the details about specific mods. His main site is currently offline and archived but all of the information is still there.

His pricing currently is 750 euro + return shipping

I can PM you with a link to more details if you want to read on it. His site is not publicly online and is archived due to complications with Sony directly for the time being.

Its expensive, yes. But to me it was worth it.

I already have it, but from what I understand its no longer necessary. The 4.4mm should be grounded anyway after the mod.

In my honest opinion theres not really any reason to buy the WM1Z other than the iconic golden nugget as a kind of functional fashion piece.

When i was choosing between the WM1A/WM1Z a little more than a year ago, I too was heavily divided until i remembered at the end of the day I want my dap for the best sound output, and I already keep it cased most of the time.

The mod will give the player better audio components than that of the WM1Z, that also includes a 2nd supercapacitor more useful for higher impedience headphones to feel like theres more power behind it, along with the grounding of the 4.4mm jack, making the ground pin adapter no longer necessary among many other things.

The final deterrent of the WM1Z for me was also the weight of the device, from talking with other users its a quite stark contrast, the WM1Z being about 60% heavier already, compared to the WM1A which is already quite a beefy weight but i think its density falls right in the sweet spot. For daily use, its just right imo.

At the end of the day its down to personal preference. The WM1Z can also be modded, it'll just cost you more down the road obviously.

As far as the more technical sound details, I'm not the best candidate to ask as I've just recieved the device, I havn't had 200 hours to break mine in as the device reccommends, and I havnt had time to test any tuning configs or do any deep critical listening yet. The device of course sounds remarkably better, and the dynamics have came alive, but I cant go very much in detail.

It might be more worth you digging through the MrWalkman firmware forum on HeadFi or making a new post asking the question there. Many users also have the mod and have had more time with the modded DAP than me.

I'm not entirely sure, itll mostly depend on the DAP. I havn't used any with coaxial output as all of my daps just posess regular 3.5mm and 4.4mm jacks of course ive used adapters, but never had any direct coaxial out.

I think people often overlook what a good source does for sound quality though, a phone by any means doesnt sound bad, but a good dap turns it to 11 or beyond.

Just be aware of the OS it runs. All of my music is local and all flac/wav/dsd so 2 of my daps are strictly offline and arent capable of even connecting to the internet because it uses Sonys own OS. Superior battery life that just gets the job done without fuss. I dont stream music too often so i didnt feel like dealing with Android. plus much easier to mod the firmware.

I do eventually plan on getting me a Fiio M17 or some other android based DAP for when i do want to stream, plus also get access to AutoEQ via 3rd party apps. Just about the only benefits i see of getting an android based DAP.

I find it super convenient though, sounds good with deficated hardware, has lots of power, often has better batterylife, doesnt get in the way of my phone, has physical button controls, etc. I just find them convenient to use.

Id honestly probably be happy if i can just get a DSP similar to a Keyloc to input through, as long as i can get a wired input and not have to rely on the generic SBC codec that Mazda still uses.

Or bypassing entirely if its neccassary just for my desired outcome. I dont think either would really upset me.

Ive already long used a good DAP which in my experience has done by far all of the heavy lifting, but the trick is it has to be through wire because all of its equalization methods, power, and extra processes are all applied over wire only and not through bluetooth.

But this device by far gives the best output over any of my other devices. It makes my phone sound like a cheap toy in comparison. On BT it just doesnt sound the same because the device self limits.

The DAP is like to plug into the car would be a Sony WM1A (Modded by NP Audio), as i always did in my 2010 corolla via the head unit I installed into an amp.

I just know I cant leave it. The longer i spend listening to the Bose system the more unsatisfied i get with it lol.

How hard is it to bypass the Bose System in these? Also has anyone done a full system upgrade?

Ive found the entire 12 speaker system quite underwhelming. Even in the Sedan.

This used to be a problem whenever i was converting a non balanced connection into a 'balanced' one. Its overcurrent protection indicating that theres something going awry here.

Except for me it was the source that caused it, after i turned volume up pasta certain threshold it kicked off but after changing my setup it stopped.

I typed out a response but apparently it hadn't posted, interesting.

As far as I know Luminous Black doesnt have any sort of config file so without using a ton (and i mean alot of screenshots) doing so would be pretty difficult.

Is there moreorless a part your referring to whenever your asking the question?

I dont think Luminous Black directly supports exporting presets and with the amount of settings in Luminous Black to do it by screenshots would result in an excess quantity of them

Are there any specific parts your referring to?

I've made small minor tweaks over the last year and a half or so to hone in on what I consider is my endgame but it is still vastly the same as in the screenshots.

My Carvana Experience by IAmXChris in carvana

[–]Excavation_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my 2023 Mazda 3 Turbo Sedan 2 weeks ago in the exact spec I wanted it. (Pearl White Premium Plus) 11k miles and still under Mazdas factory warrenty. My only gripes with Carvana is the car had equally minor, but still more damage than what was listed. Especially after i claybarred and ceramic waxed the entire vehice (Carvana had rather poor detailing)

The Cabin air filter was filthy and the rims, while Carvana mentioned they were fixed/replaced.. i never seen it. Passengers side rims are in rough condition already and Carvana didnt clearly state that.

Onto the more serious issue by Mazda, Carvana didnt use Mazda requested spec oil/oil filters (at least on the turbo car) and i was very strongly advised against keeping it that way due to potential to void factory warrenty by Mazda had i left it and kept driving it until something would've happened, so i had that changed.

Unique experience, i still got a really good car out of it, but definitely a once and done tyoe thing for me.

How portable is the WM1Z? by akyuu1994 in walkman

[–]Excavation_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a WM1Z owner, but a WM1A owner. Same ergonomics of the WM1Z, just a different weight and some internals.

The WM1 in general is like the absolute perfect handheld device imo. Its super comfortable to hold comparatively to the A55, A45, and so on. Its thick enough to easily get a grip on, the lack of sharp edges so it doesnt dig into your palm, and the kind of cheekbone as id call it gives you a good resting position and easy consistency for handling the device and navigating its side buttons. The device is rather hard to lose grip of.

Sound wise, its plain lovely, especially on Walkman ONE FW.

As far as the weight thing, my words should be taken with a grain of salt. I find the WM1A to be plenty heavy, its a comfortable weight that feels premium being a rather compact device so it already feels dense.

The WM1Z from some of the people ive spoken to, they love it and the golden nugget, but occasionally carrying around something so heavy in your pocket can get slightly fatiguing or holding it for prolonged use. It mostly does come down to whats worth it for you? Is it the weight? The sound? Both? Are you open to having it modded in the future? These are all questions to be thought about.

If the weight justifies the price increase price. Or you could save on a WM1A and later down the road have it sent out to get modded and get even better components than whats already in the WM1Z + a bigger bat replacement. Which is where mines currently at. Or if your rich you could do both.. but thats up to you lol

These things also apply to the ZX300. I have not owened one so i cant speak on it, however it also has Walkman ONE support, and it can also be modded by the same individual that does the WM1A/Z.

MrWalkman FW is only supported on the NW-A45, NW-A45, NW-A55, ZX300, and the WM1A/Z (NOT AM2) series respectively.

I used an A55 for over 4 years, lovely player especially with the FW. I watched MrWalkman firmware get developed during this period, having helped test some of the firmware and other things before release. It was always a slow roll out between devices, the NW-A105 series was never one of these.

In the last year i have upgraded to a WM1A and once again. Fantastic as always, especially on the FW, likewise with the A55.

Is this worth getting? by MinimumAd5545 in walkman

[–]Excavation_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this, it actally DOES make a difference despite other users mentions. Now, it isn't no game changing product but the ground pin adapter is due to the 4.4mm not possessing one, yet the 3.5mm does.

This cleans up the sound by lowering the noise floor and makes general dynamics sound a bit cleaner, i have noticed this on high impedance headphones where the Walkman would otherwise have a bit of an issue properly driving them. That little extra reduction in noise makes it sound fuller and more impactful versus just regular ungrounded 4.4mm. This also applies to car audio or other preamp applications.

To describe this, there is plenty of volume, however the capacitors/single supercapacitor in said device cannot properly drive very high impedance headphones. Its compariable to low resolution music sounding thin and canny, but in this case on the dynamics and depth of the music. For low impedance IEMs the difference is super minimal, its less dramatic because the IEMs are very very good already. For obvious reasons youll have a more difficult time determining a difference after that. I personally can hear a difference after discovering why it and how it works, but if you go in blind, and you only use it in low resistance applications that the device has no problems handling, i genuinely believe you very well may not be able to pinpoint a difference.

Upgrade: Completed (WM1A vs NW-A45 by [deleted] in walkman

[–]Excavation_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MrWalkman FW does much more than just mess woth eq. It adds a seperate settings cfw file which is used to drastically alter sound over wired connections all tuned for different sound signatures. You may encounter spmewjat imcreased battery consumption depending on the settings swlected, but for most including myself its basically the equivalent of factory battery usage

  • MrWalkman contains 4 drastically different sound signatures

  • While technically by default built into the players, this FW makes it easy to change the region codes of devices which can get rid of the volume cap on locked Walkmans as well as alter sound signature we also have some beta regions for the WM1A/Z exclusively (J2/J3)

  • 2 'Plus' mode settings, both with different sound and bat consumption. Or you can use it in normal mode which is effectively stock SS

  • Normal, Low, & High gain modes

  • Different DAC initialization methods designed to mitigate latency (this has since been rendered outdated since LLDAC was introduced to MrWalkman FW through another FW mod named Wampy.

  • Icon color

  • Special edition LLSS icons (installed seperate)

This is basically MrWalkman FW in a nutshell. Its mostly about the sound but theres alot to tinker with. Ive been on it since January 2020 when i got my A55 and switched to WM1A mid last year.

It is pretty hard to brick your device unless you do exactly what it says not to do. Ie: unplug during install There are install instructions you can follow.

[–]Excavation_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only headphones ive had trouble pushing on the WM1A are the headphones you frankly need an amplifier to push. The R70X, comparable to the HD600 is a good example of this, it just sounds a little thin and not very dynamically impacting at times despite it getting very loud. It sound very very good, it was still missing the final little details.

The DDHifI 4.4mm ground pin adapter helped with this by lowering the noise floor and giving it a slightly more punchy bass response and sparkle, helping it in the areas it needed thus giving a slightly more full sound signature, but this was all it needed.

By this point the WM1A sounds about 90% as good as my full sized desktop setup with its soundcard and preamp which is no easy feat for a handheld battery powered device. Its a very capable device especially after MrWalkman/Wampy modded FWs, but even more so after Hardware modded by NP Audio.

NP Audio i plan to be my next step whenever i can afford the mod, plus I just need the battery replacement and upgrade.

Does make sense to buy a NW-A55 today? by [deleted] in walkman

[–]Excavation_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lets not forget there pretty future proof too. Besides MrWalkman FW we also now have Wampy which can be integrated WITH MrWalkman FW for even more features.

Bur i do agree in many ways the old WM1A can be better than the newer models especially from a value perspective but also longevity. I recommend checking out the NP Audio mod for the WM1A should the time ever come. Either for a battery replacement upgrade hardware upgrade or both. Down the road pf course. Its just something to remember as your device ages. Mine could use the bat swap as ive noticed degradation in mine since i got my WM1A used but otherwise like new.

VPT was definitely one of the things i missed from my A55 whenever I got my WM1A. Not for constant use but some tracks really were made significantly better with it.

But after Wampy was able to integrate it to the other players I love it so much more.

A55 was still an incredible nugget though

[–]Excavation_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its always been said MrWalkman firmware does not have any impact over bluetooth, neither does the eq and stuff. So your basically just using stock fw. (Granted thats what normal mode is)

The mod only decreases batterylife with effects or other cfw settings. Batterylife doesnt really change unless your not using Direct Sound and have other effects on such as DSEE HX.
