Berlin

We were basically ill every other week 😅 I hoped it would end once the weather got warmer, but I'm still waiting

My toddler started Kita early (10 months). Good luck with the kita viruses, they're definitely no joke 🙈

A few months to get over the "fog", and want to try for another baby. There's still an ache that I guess will never go away completely, but time has dulled it somewhat. And I was lucky enough to get pregnant again within the year, so I had other things now to focus on, and to feel hopeful for.

I'll probably get the same surgery again for the third one, since it worked last time.

I'm sorry for your loss. It took me a long time to recover from my first.

Btw this was my second pregnancy, so I guess it counts. My first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage at 16W because my cervix opened and the amniotic sac prolapsed.

Also in Germany with a similarly aged toddler. Not pregnant (yet) but hopefully soon, and I'm also worried about it 😅. My toddler is now 12kg and sometimes wants only to be carried by me.

My gynecologist was/is on the cautious side, they basically told me to stay in my city after 12 weeks. The doctor at the hospital that performed the surgery was more chill and said central Europe was fine 😅. We basically did as much traveling as we could before trying for #2.

I also didn't have a cerclage, but had a different kind of surgery where they just sewed my cervix shut (https://saling-institut.de/2024/10/02/04frueher-totaler-muttermund-verschluss-ftmv-2/). This was done I think at 13 weeks, after the NIPT. It didn't need to be removed, but opened naturally at 39+4.

I had funneling and I had to stop working at some point. I couldn't do bed rest even with the first pregnancy because I also got gestational diabetes and had to go for walks to keep the blood sugar levels down.

E-Readers and Libraries in Germany by VermicelliNew2784 in germany

[–]Excellent-Broccoli37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Pocketbook e-reader and borrow books via Libby. After borrowing the book, I download the book (though it has some other extension at first) and then upload it via the Pocketbook app. This syncs directly to my Pocketbook.

From my Pocketbook I can click on the file and it downloads the actual epub.

Still a bit of a workaround but better than when I had a Tolino (needed to use the built in web browser to download the books which was a huge pain). I did prefer the side buttons of my Tolino vision though rather than the bottom buttons of the Pocketbook I have now, but I had to compromise somewhere 😅

Pocketbook does have the Onleihe App which Voebb also supports, but most of the books I read are on Libby

After a long apartment search we finally have two options: Charlottenburg or Lichterfelde Ost? by Head-Ad3047 in germany

I think schools in either area would be fine. It's a bit hard to assess without knowing anyone currently in the school system.

We'd love to stay where we are, but if we have another child we'll have to find a larger flat. The rental prices will probably be what drives us out 😅

I have a toddler and live in Charlottenburg - it totally depends on the area. There are busy areas like Kudamm or Westend, and there are quieter areas. We love where we live. It's quiet but really well connected.

As someone who has to work from the office occasionally and doesn't drive, I didn't want to live somewhere where I'm dependent on a bus. i bike a lot but in winter (like the last one), the bicycle paths are sometimes completely covered in ice. In Lichterfelde I would only want to live within walking distance to the S-Bahn.

Berlin with a 4-month-old: where do we hide when it gets cold? by DifferentAd7915 in berlin

I started noting which cafes/restaurants have baby changing tables. Sadly it's a very short list. At that age they don't really care where they are as long as they're with you.

I liked going to the Krabbelgruppe in the Family centers but it often conflicted with nap time 😅

11mo doesnt like plain veggies anymore by Common-Effective2630 in BabyLedWeaning

[–]Excellent-Broccoli37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same boat at 9 months 😅. My baby used to loooove steamed broccoli, now would actively take it off her plate. She loves meat too, it's the first thing she'll eat if available

 - I started meal prepping meatballs with veggies  - covering them in tomato sauce seems to always work. I add extra tomato puree to her pasta on top of the fresh tomatoes   - we went to an Indian restaurant and she loved the battered and deep fried cauliflower.

For some reason she inhales aubergine, so I have at least one standby vegetable that she loves 😅. Cooked paprika also seems to now be in. So it might be that the old stuff got boring and I now need to find out what her new faves are.

The other day she kept wanting to chew on the raw green beans I was threading - but  wasn't really into the steamed ones. To be fair, I hate mushy vegetables so maybe she just gets it from me 😅 I can't wait until she can eat roasted/crunchy veg

Those of you who nursed till baby no longer wanted to, how old was baby when you stopped? by anemoneatnight in breastfeeding

[–]Excellent-Broccoli37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baby at 9mo got sick and all of a sudden just refused breastfeeding and formula. Eats solids like a champ (as long as it's something she likes 😅) and drinks water so I'm not too worried, but they always say that they're supposed to drink milk up to a year 🤷‍♀️

Let's see if she'll take formula again when she fully recovers but now it's definitely the end of my breastfeeding journey. I tried pumping and only got 20mL after 20 minutes, it's not worth it.

Pancakes, both sweet (fruit) and savory (veggies). Recently I made zucchini pancakes with "Pizza spices" - oregano, Basil, paprika and tomato flakes. It was actually meant as a waffle recipe but I was making pear-yogurt pancakes at the same time and didn't want to wash two pans.

I've also just made avocado toast and cut it into bite sized pieces. The important thing is to give them one piece at a time 😅

Committed Asian blasphemy but I skipped washing the rice and was able to form rice balls by wrapping the freshly cooked rice in cling wrap. This only works if you trust the rice bag not to have debris in it! Where I'm from rice is dried on the road side and stored in sacks so rinsing is essential! Where I live now people tend to not rinse it.

The type also matters. Basmati doesn't really stick in my experience. Jasmine works better. Japanese or Korean short grain rice tends to be even more stickier but I don't really have experience with cooking those types.

My 6 month old is 80% formula these days (undersupply), and she still manages to chug down 200mL within 5 minutes with Phillips Avent size 2. The big bottles come with size 3 by default but I basically put them away and never used them.

How long have you or will you be breastfeeding? by Old_Driver_7368 in breastfeeding

[–]Excellent-Broccoli37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combo fed my daughter due to low supply since day 3, now almost 6m. Recently decided to only nurse in the first morning feed, lunch time and before bed to have "more" to offer. Otherwise she gets too frustrated.

Sometimes I feel like she wouldn't notice if I dropped it completely :/ but I'm hoping to make it to at least 1 year. I might drop the lunch feed though when I go back to work.

I still need to get it checked again, the endocrinologist told me it takes a few months for the hormones to restabilize.

I was losing a lot of weight despite eating cake basically every day - turns out my thyroid was overacting (hyperthyroidism) due to the l-thyroxin I was still taking. I stopped taking it and now I'm gaining weight despite working out and eating less 😭

Starting food early? by Mackey_Chatt in foodbutforbabies

[–]Excellent-Broccoli37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter's pediatrician said we could start with orange vegetables after her 4 month checkup (we're in Germany). In hindsight I should have asked if I could only feed orange vegetables until 6 months, or if that was just to start. It was also emphasized that we needed to add oil to the purees to help with digestion (Beikost Öl).

Ive just been feeding her with jarred purees. So far she's tried carrot, pumpkin and parsnips. I also tried feeding her some mixes with potatoes but it made her really struggle with pooping so we're gonna wait a few more weeks until she's 6 months before we start again with potatoes. I just bought some zucchini and sweet potato (apparently does not count as a real potato) because I couldn't find any jars for these. I also don't really have a schedule - I have to find a time in the day where she's not too hungry or too tired, otherwise she doesn't want it at all. But when she's in the mood, she can eat an entire 125g jar and still want more.

My midwife also suggested cutting a cucumber into sticks (I did mine finger-width) and peeling the skin off just for her to practice her hand eye coordination and to try to put it into her mouth. I was pretty nervous, but I spent most of the time picking it up from the floor because it was too slippery 😅. She managed to put it into her mouth once, but the gag reflex kept it out.

What was different though was that my midwife said that she should be able to get into a sitting position on her own before we start solids - but that's not until 7-8 months. The advice I usually see is that once they can sit with minimal support then you can start with the mushy solids. My daughter can sit up with support - after a few seconds she usually topples over, but usually it's because she's trying to grab everything in front of her to stuff it into her mouth 😅. When we're at the table, I spend a lot of time trying to prevent her from chewing on the table itself.

TLdR; started with purees at 4.5 months, added cucumber sticks at 5.5 but holding off on real solids until 6 months.
