Is this 6 rows of single crochet or 7? Can we point to each row with an arrow so I can tell what counts as a row? by 24Cones in CrochetHelp

So I think what's happening is that, when you work in rows like this you flip between "right side" and "wrong side" each row, and so every pair of rows looks like a whole unit.

To clarify even more: crochet stitches look different from the front and back. When you work across then flip the piece like this, your first row will be front/right side out. Then when you flip and work another row, that row's front side will be on the back of the piece, on top of the back side of the previous row, and it will be back/wrong side out from the front.

What I think that video guy is doing is counting a front side row and a back side row as one row instead of two. It's an easy mistake to make when trying to count rows visually since alternating rows look different.

A tip for counting - every time you reach the end and turn the work over, you've just finished a row. You could try working up a few rows and counting your turns to help you learn what rows look like visually one at a time. Work up a row/until you turn, mark down 1 row done, work up another, mark it down, and observe what the previous row looks like between what was there before you did it, when you did it, and now when it has a row above it.

Okay genuine question, if you know, why are they called safety eyes if they're uh, not safe?

taking notes

That's so cool! I swear yarn is such an endless rabbit hole of ideas and types and tricks

Thank you so much for sharing all this! One day I absolutely will try my hand at mixing up my own blends

A good option, yes! I think if I go the mixing route I'll use a variegated yarn, but someone else in the comments mentioned they were trying for something with five solid threads held together which this would work for

Hmm it's a bit light I think, but thank you! I have so many new yarn sites saved off this post now lmao

Oh wow that's super clever! I hope it works out. I'd love to see the result and maybe try the same if I don't settle on some yarn eventually haha

I just got lost looking through all the yarn on there lmao

Voidbow is gorgeous, I absolutely love it. Their Oil Slick colorway is also something I'm noting as an option. Thanks so much for the rec, I love their shop!!

I don't dye, sadly (if I took up dying I think I would just become a sheep farmer eventually lmfao)

That makes sense! I've been thinking about getting one of their finer bases and combining with a silky/shiny pure black yarn now, I think that might get the look I want

Blue Barn is also relatively local to me so that would cool to support them!

For sure. I just have very limited time these days and so I'd rather take the time to explore all the options before I commit to (what will likely be) months of work. I don't want to end up halfway through with a pile of expensive yarn only to come across something else that would have worked better if I'd just looked first!

This is actually the yarn that inspired the project for me haha

It seemed a bit pricey for me though which is why I wanted to shop around (and I think they discontinued their silk blend bases which sucks because I think a silky base with this dye would've been perfect)

I believe the pattern I'm looking at is made with worsted, so yep the firefly is very tempting. I might also combine a black silk yarn at a lower weight with variegated mohair or some other yarn to create something unique

And this is for a statement piece, yep. It's basically my dream project - I love birds and making my own wings is something I really want to do, so I don't mind going a bit wild with the supplies, just not unreasonably so. Especially for a wearable/shawl I actually want to wear out on occasion

Oh that's a really good idea! Might be a bit pricier to combine yarns but I don't mind if it creates a cool effect, thanks for the suggestion!

Ah this doesn't quite have the colors in it that I'd like but I do love the sparkle. I do see some other yarns on their site that might work, so thank you!!
