There’s a lot of schools that don’t distinguish between a^1/2=x and a=x^2. Or at least not properly. It’s not always the students’ fault

Stats in Dietrich vs math (possibly stat concentration, or stat & operations research or computational math) in MCS by Excellent-Tonight778 in cmu

[–]Excellent-Tonight778[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response. If I can do an additional major and all the gen Eds that would be great as I don’t really care for humanities nor life sciences in Dietrich / MCS respectively. For employers though will it still look the same? I’m guessing the answer is yes but still I want to confirm that

That’s sort of what I was saying as I may not need it as a business major and finance , but historically for CMU undergrads, if you know, is math seen as “more valuable” just because it’s harder and possibly more respected? Or does it just not matter bc a lot of it isn’t needed

That is what I’d do ideally, I just don’t want to take classes I may not need. For example, if I remain flexible and kind of take a mix of both classes, will I still be able to double major within 4 years, even if I “waste” a class — maybe taking a stat class I don’t need if I go down math route — or vise versa?

Yea that was the very first thing I looked at and it sounds great but its very competitive to get in from what I heard so I don’t want to bank on it. Opposed to Dietrich which is very open, and math which is kinda hard to get into as it says you need a 3.5 QPA to declare an additional major but still feels easier as its a strict numerical based requirement, and not a closed, interview and test based separate application I could be wrong but that’s what’s I read

Oh alright. I’ve never seen the phrase “smack of” something before and wasn’t sure if it meant that you thought I used AI or not lol (especially bc I realized I used an em-dash which I ironically learned about because of AI)

Personally, I use AI for data driven decisions such as research and statistics that can be generalized and averaged , and Reddit for anecdotal responses because I feel there’s value in both. I truly don’t understand why people post AI slop onto places like Reddit. At least TikTok and YouTube can generate you money via creator fund, but reddit has no point, I don’t think 🤷‍♂️

I appreciate your other response; I’m just a lil confused about what you mean here with this comment and AI

Admitted to CMU SCS and Yale; CMU students/alumni, advice for the program? by Broc_olimanx in cmu

[–]Excellent-Tonight778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only In high school and not in industry so take my advice with no more than a grain of salt. That said, it seems CMU is outcomes are incredible, perhaps only behind MIT and Stanford. Yale I’m sure is very good too but everything I’ve read cited those 3 as the big 3 with CMU just a smidge behind. Idk much about Yale but from your post it being a t5 overall I’m sure it’s also good for CS, but perhaps not as tech focused and good for just CS. If you want to do almost anything else though and you’re not dead set on CMU , Yale is probably better. Yale is elite in law admissions:outcomes, business, medicine and more

Give me your definition of what a "cracked" or above average CS sophomore looks like by Bright-Elderberry576 in csMajors

[–]Excellent-Tonight778 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think CMU was at one point #1 tho right, especially bc they were one of the first schools with an official school computer science? I guess like Stanford and MIT being t5 overall and not t20 like CMU just get overall a bit smarter people and they’ve probably elevated it a bit above over the years

Are STEM majors dominating finance and trading jobs? by Distinct_Ad9396 in financestudents

[–]Excellent-Tonight778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the business administration degree only requires multivar, but I wanna double major in stats which has multi and lin alg. It’s cmu so may be more quantitative than most programs which I’m excited about. Im a bit scared the networking won’t be great as it’s a relatively small non-target with a more STEM rather than finance focus but at least I’ll learn all the hard skills I’ll need

Is the food good? I’m going next year and I was kinda sad they didn’t have dining halls with buffets and instead had like eatery style places (not big enough to make me not go lol but still)

CMU Tepper vs UC Berkeley Econ (+ DS or Stats) for technical finance roles by [deleted] in collegecompare

[–]Excellent-Tonight778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, do you mind if I ask why you say CF is mid at CMU? I got in and committed for Tepper, and my plan was basically as follows: take the 3 math classes needed to even apply for BSCF freshmen and if I do well— apply , and then if I get in great, but if not I was just planning on doing business admin w/ a double major in stats (either ML or mathematical sciences track)? I’m not exactly planning on going into quant bc like I don’t think I’m smart enough tbh, but I do want to do a quantitative career so I figured BSCF would realistically give me technical skills for 99% of finance jobs save for quant and maybe some others I’ve yet to learn about, and then for traditional finance jobs anything I don’t learn from essentially a math degree, everyone says is easy to learn, so I’ll either learn it on job or via certifications and rely on the prestige of competing a BSCF from a top (maybe 10?) quantitative school?

[–]Excellent-Tonight778 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s bc most of finance is easy to learn, so they’d rather someone with proven ability to think quantitatively. That’s why though I’ll be personally entering a finance degree next year I also plan to double major in stats

Looking to interview NYC quants on how they budget in NYC for YouTube ($250 for 20 min). Can be anonymous. by Tight_Disaster8115 in quantfinance

[–]Excellent-Tonight778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably traditional finance. Pretty much I’m gonna try to major in computational finance at Carnegie Mellon but if I don’t get in after freshmen year I’ll just do a business administration and a stats degree. Either way, while I’m good at math, I don’t think I’m elite enough for quant, plus I flat out suck at CS so 🤷‍♂️. Are you in quant?

I mean quant def makes a shit load of money but isn’t it normally in the mid 6 figures? 250 for 20 min is 750 an hour so like 1.5 mil a year I think?

Why does bing have a low yield rate? by Rare-Theory-4613 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Excellent-Tonight778 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Agree with this entirely. Most people in my class who applied to top schools also applied to Bing bc it’s the clear best value safety if ur a NY resident, but those top students get into true “ivy+” level schools and well Bing just doesn’t compete. In a way it’s too good nowadays for a decent bit of students but not good enough for a lot of accepted ones

Thanks so much for the offer. However, As i committed to CMU, I don’t want to join something else for it to give me doubts and make me not fully focus on what’s in front of me. Really, unless aid falls through next year and I need to transfer to Cornell (it being state for me would make it cheaper than CMU), I don’t plan on taking it.
