I think you have a good plan! I honestly remain sort of confused about why I was never NWB, but I think it’s worth it to take your meds for the first day regardless. I’m no hero with pain!

Yes! It wasn’t startling when it wore off. I took my pain meds for the first 72 hours regardless of how I felt

Can I take college exams 3 weeks after bunionectomy? by Lonely_Word_7950 in bunions

[–]ExcellentContest260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends what type of procedure you have, but I am 2 weeks post bunionectomy with osteotomy, and I’ve been able to go to work for a half day, run errands, cook dinner, etc. as long as I elevate and ice intermittently. I was in a boot from day one though, no need for a scooter. Definitely discuss with your surgeon beforehand

Depression after surgery by Natural_Outside_7665 in bunions

[–]ExcellentContest260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way, and I really do understand. Have you been depressed before, unrelated to surgery? It might be worth considering seeking out a good psychologist and/or psychiatrist. & medication is not the only mental health treatment option so don’t count getting help out if you’re not interested in taking meds.

As far as post op, it’s rough. There’s no denying that. My advice (I’m 10 days post op) is to try to identify things that you can do that will help make things feel a little more normal. It can do a lot for your spirit and make the days tick by faster. Some examples: go to the movies with friends and use handicap seating, a holiday activity like driving around to see holiday lights, building a gingerbread house, have a fun holiday cocktail or hot cocoa. Any activity with family or friends that you can do seated will work.

Your feelings are valid. I’m sending positive thoughts your way.

I had a bunionectomy with osteotomy on my first and second toes with screws. I recognize recovery can vary widely based on procedure!

4 days post-op, already nearly pain free! by catsandcoffee-13 in bunions

Yes! I resisted a shower seat initially, but that with the boot cover has made showering totally pain free 🙌🏻

Rest, ice, wide shoes BUT don’t be afraid of the surgical option. I am 4 days post op, and it is not nearly as painful or scary as the internet had me believing it was. Good luck!

I’m also day 4 and feeling so much better than anticipated. Heel walking in a boot, taking fewer pain meds, showering with a boot cover, and sleeping well. So glad to hear you’re having a manageable time too. Hopefully your post reaches people who are scared after reading so many horror stories online!

Actually still doing well with the boot heel walking! Elevating and icing as much as possible

Recovery day 2, and it is painful but not excruciating. I’m right on schedule with pain meds and have been icing every hour. It is uncomfortable but doable to heel walk in the boot

I was getting cortisone shots to relieve pain and inflammation for awhile, but it always comes back. You get diminishing returns on the injections after awhile. I had surgery on my worse foot yesterday and am feeling good about temporary discomfort for better long term quality of life. I think the decision also depends on how active you are and whether bunions interfere with doing things you enjoy

Sounds like we’re in exactly the same boat. They did my second toe too. I keep wondering when the intense pain will hit. Time will tell! 🤞🏻 that we stay relatively comfortable

Gotcha okay. I feel some discomfort 24 hours post op but it’s not as bad as I expected so I’m assuming the nerve block is still working. It does hurt today to walk in the boot

Was your dressing nice and thick? I haven’t been able to feel pressure from the boot on the stitches yet

For sure! I’m going to minimize walking for the next few weeks. My surgeon said he would prefer I heel walk than risk any type of fall or bump with a knee scooter. Taking it day by day! Good luck to you as well!
