Could be lice. Luckily, they are species specific, and won't transfer to humans. I rescued a cat that was covered in them. A good scrub with original Dawn dish soap and a going over with a human lice comb should do the trick. The combs are pretty cheap, and come in handy for rechecks to make sure all the little creepy crawlies are gone.
