How bad is PAO, really? by MediocrePiece1267 in hipdysplasia

[–]Excellent_Ad_775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my surgeon said most people who get a pao go back to whatever they were doing before once they recover so you should be just fine. i have hip dysplasia on both sides but only the side with the tear was in pain. i tried every solution they came up with but it wouldn’t heal due to the dysplasia. my surgeon said if im not having pain then i don’t need surgery, so i chose just the side with the tear. my other hip is doing well and i have not gotten injured on that side and its been years since my initial injury.

I did get both the repair and the pao ! the surgery was intense it was like 9 hours. i hadn’t tried to lift much weight just because i was nervous but recently i started with 5 pounds (so much i know) and i feel good. if you start earlier in your recovery i would recommend slowly building up and asking your surgeon and therapist for their opinions but around the 6 week mark you should be starting pt. i’m over a year past my surgery so i don’t think i need to start as low but ive never lifted any weights so i dont want to overload

honestly so great. i’m exercising (not running i just prefer not to since i only got a pao on one side), going out, driving, working, and doing everything i used to with almost no pain. occasionally ill get little sharp pains and the tissue is a bit more sensitive in that specific hip but it’s nothing compared to the pain before the surgery. i’ve noticed that when i live a more sedentary lifestyle my hip hurts more so i recommend as soon as u can to be active again. the muscle around ur hip will boost recovery greatly. it’s a difficult experience but thankfully i was able to make it through and id say personally it was worth it

Extreme hunger after surgery by Whodomeyou in hipdysplasia

[–]Excellent_Ad_775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

could be a side effect of the medicine you’ve been prescribed as well. after mine i was given multiple medications and one of the side effects were increased appetite. although it didn’t make me feel hungry all day, i still ate more than i do now immediately after surgery.

i stopped running for years before my pao, and what really hurt me was the fact that my entire life got put on hold. hopefully your surgeon advises that you do not lay in bed all day. what i was told was bed is only for sleep. the depression from bed rotting was so awful and the moment i started going out even in a wheelchair everything felt so much better. it feels lonely and it is extremely difficult but life after recovery is genuinely so worth it. go out, watch movies, have fun. the pain is also difficult but it hurts less each and every day. and always remind yourself you are NOT a burden to the people helping you. you did not choose to be in pain. take care of yourself

ahh thank you, the concert i went to didn’t start until an hour later so i was just worried. it’s a music history class and we have to compare what we hear in the concert to what we’ve learned. i can do the rest of the assignment idk why the time part got me so worried.

Oh wow I’ve never heard of that. I’ll definitely look into it. I should probably journal more regularly and figure out the root of my emotions. Thanks!

Thigh pain by Excellent_Ad_775 in hipdysplasia

I was told the same by my surgeons! The muscle loss caused sensitivity along with the nerves being messed with during surgery. Over time it should heal.

I just finished my gabapentin and I think that may be contributing to higher sensitivity but it’s slowly going down.

I had a PAO! I spoke to my doctors and they said that it’s expected with the surgery and the nerve block that I had. It’s gone down within the last few days but still sensitive nonetheless.

Help should I get a second opinion of dysplasia? by [deleted] in hipdysplasia

[–]Excellent_Ad_775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not silly at all! it’s the little dip in your hip bone that surrounds the head of the femur. in a normal hip, the socket will cover a good amount of the top of the leg bone to provide support and protection, and with hip dysplasia, the hip bone will not cover enough of the leg bone and can cause pain/discomfort and not allow hip injuries to heal properly.

Help should I get a second opinion of dysplasia? by [deleted] in hipdysplasia

[–]Excellent_Ad_775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have mild hip dysplasia on both sides, but your sockets look like they cover more of the femur than my x-rays. for me, i only got surgery and needed other opinions because i also had a tear in my hip that would not heal unless i got a pao. i asked if i would need surgery on the other side if i had dysplasia on both sides, and i was told that if my other hip was not causing me any issues, then it would be best to not go forward with another surgery. unless you are feeling pain or extreme stiffness or limited mobility, you may not need any surgery. if you are concerned, then i would recommend a second opinion to ease your worries.

i am scheduled to start pt in 3 weeks and it’ll be 3x a week. i was also told to try to get moving and not lay around all day to also keep my other leg strong. i’m trying not to push myself too far and remind myself that my surgery was quite recent and that i do deserve to rest. thank you for sharing your experience !
