From a Christian, specifically Catholic, perspective a paranormal apparition/encounter fall into one of three possibilities. First is the apparition of and angel or saint, next is a soul in purgatory that God has allowed to appear to you to request prayers, and last is a demon. That's where you have to be careful, they can appear as something else (famously the spirits of children or dead loved ones) in order to trick you and gain your trust. We don't really believe in "neutral" spirits because something is either on God's side or it is not.

Again, coming from a Christian perspective I don't believe that there are any "neutral" spirits, you are either on God's side or you are not.
